This is a great book! It's lower calorie food, grouped by cooking methods. Most of the recipes here are quick and family friendly, and you can focus on the method you prefer. For example, I didn't find the skillet dinners that helpful, but the sheetpan and slow cooker dinners are great! While these recipes are generally family friendly, they are a little spicier and a bit varied (curries, asian-influenced dishes). That works well for me though, because if someone doesn't like the spice I can always leave it out. The shaved brussels sprouts salad and yum yum sauce are great accompaniments. Highlights for me were the pulled pork, and eggs cooked in mushroom caps. There is also a great baked shrimp risotto that my family loved.

While the calorie counts are included here, full nutrition information isn't, which I think can be important for some people (like if you're watching fat or sodium). If you need to cook for a group regularly, these are healthy-ish dishes that most people will like and you can get on the table easily.

The book is bright, well laid out and crammed with great photographs. The recipes are first rate, intelligent, easy to follow, great for the waistline and especially, tasty. Pip, The Slimming Foodie, has put together an excellent product.

Honestly, I was disappointed with this cookbook, not that it's a bad set of recipes, or not well produced. In those aspects it is excellent. My disappointment came from how little I found I could use in the way of recipes from it.

First, it's at least two thirds to three-quarters vegan or vegetarian recipes which is a hard sell to the group of committed carnivores I cook for. Secondly the regular use of ingredients we have problems with. The author's approach to cutting calorific content seems to be throwing out the meat and throwing in beans. While I appreciate beans are a good source of fibre and protein when you have members of your household who can't eat beans or just don't like them it's a problem. Then throw in lentils, barley, and more all no-goes in my house as well. It makes the recipes difficult to use without basically rewriting them which I will likely do as there are some good ideas.

So overall a great set of recipes if the ingredients suit you, but for me and mine as I said a disappointment.
