I’m a fan of Dr. James’s instagram account and thought I’d enjoy his book as well. It was expensive…more than $30 for a paperback.

But I didn’t like it at all. Thumbing thru it I could see it was very much like a published thesis paper…VERY scientific. I requested to return it and Amazon refunded my money but said to keep it. I ended up reading the last chapter which had some good meal ideas. But again, nothing you couldn’t get from the internet. Save your money and just follow along on his IG for healthy tips.

My low rating had more to do with technical issues than content. I purchased the Kindle version for $9.99 because the PAPERback version was $33.29. That seems a little pricey for a paperback to me. Anyway...fully 52% of the book was endnotes/footnotes. I appreciate the fact the I had an opportunity if I wanted to actually follow the research. If you are a "science-y" type, you may really enjoy this feature. I wasn't concerned so much with science. Because there were SO MANY footnotes it made advancing pages difficult. Many times when I would tap on the edge of my screen to turn the page I would inevitably tap on a footnote. This did become rather annoying after the 20th time.

If I had it to do over again, I would not buy the book. I would simply follow the author on Instagram or Facebook. He has some great advice and a positive, no-nonsense approach on those sites without all the science and digital glitches.

Half the book - literally 50% - are the sources to the footnotes. I had gotten all the relevant information already from the author's Instagram, but in case I ever feel like checking out the science behind his claims it's good to know I can.

  • Luke Koskinen

Love his Instagram posts and enjoyed the split between science and practical advice.

  • Millie Batalo

Reads like a text book, has an unnecessarily long history of obesity, and has little practical application of the information. I’ve been following him on IG for a few years and his content is pretty good. Skip the book, it’s so boring and disappointing.

  • Melanie Brewer

As a nutrition coach there is so much useful information in this book that will be helpful with current and future clients. I found this book very informative and interesting, but I love all the nerdy nutrition science.

  • Lindsay Baker

Reads like a textbook. 3.5 stars for quality information.

One of the best scientific short-books about the importance of how our body functions and it’s domino effects/consequences on today’s modern food system. An incredible and awakening book that sheds light on the “whys” of the obesity epidemic. For someone who is looking for insight to the body’s function based on scientific research and empirical data, this book was phenomenal for laying out the truth about our food systems and how it has failed humanity. Whilst, also bringing about excellent ways to combat obesity for the long term.

Note: if you don’t have a science background, it can be difficult to follow along but, I highly encourage anyone who deals with obesity or wants to know more about its consequences to read it.

This book is very technical in the way that scientific terminology was used to explain the metabolic processes and functions of the body. This made for a more challenging read, but I appreciated it because it gave credence to the suggestions the authors made. I also liked that the last chapter wrapped up everything in a nice package for you to easily refer back to. I only wished the authors did a deeper dive into the section about food labels; providing examples, explaining the breakdowns, etc.

The extensive research and studies referenced in this book gives it a justifiably authoritative voice, which distinguishes it from similar books in its genre.

  • Lynnette

This book is not for the average reader looking to gear up for the New Year with a prescriptive plan to lose weight. It may come across as too scientific and complex for most. There are seven chapters covering the cause of obesity, calorie conundrum, hormonal mechanisms, sugar, enrichment, fat, and structuring a diet for sustainable weight loss. I agree with many other reviewers who have recommended that you follow Dr. DiNicolantonio on Instagram. He regularly posts succinct, helpful information on nutrition.

  • Priscila Gonzalez

    I found great information.

I felt for a minute it’s a bit too technical around how body and all works…. and would have prefer a more general sense, but also can appreciate why it was done like this.

I love the recommendations and actions are easy to put in practice and understand.

I think it’s a good book overall to understand your body and how to take action, I also follow the author on IG and love his posts and that’s the reason to promoted me to buy the audiobook.

Concise book about protein fats carbs and what you need to do in order to live a healthier lifestyle. Great tips on how to help compact diabetes. Studies focused on what to do in ordered to keep lean muscle mass when on a caloric restriction. Overall very science focused which I enjoyed. Basically information about exercise and fitness.

1.5/5 stars - My doctor gave me a list of books to listen to regarding hormones/PCOS/thyroid - this was on it as there was a chapter in it. I was quite excited as I follow the author on IG…this book was mid. One 50 minute chapter on what I was looking for a 7 other hours of him talking about The Biggest Loser. 👎🏻 & for the stuff I was looking for, nothing you can’t find on Google. Disappointed.

  • Allie Perez

I liked this a lot. I felt like it had a lot of good information. But, then when I got to the recipes I was highly disappointed. The fact that he encourages fake sugars was upsetting. Beyond the recipes, it was a great guide.

  • LUIS YASSER

    Excelente información. De fácil lectura

  • Samantha Nowatzke

Great read. A lot of science that is a bit over my head that I'll continue to go back through and digest but overall book give extremely practical suggestions including meal suggestions at the end.

  • Sara

Mostly a scientific read but they do break it down in sections in simple people language. The summaries at the end of each chapter is super helpful!

  • MelbaJane2386

This book is nothing like his IG snippets he posts… the book was not helpful other than telling you why America has an obesity problem. Thanks we knew that, our food is crap.

  • Dora

Waste of time - barely any info presented- diet information less than a google search summary would provide.

  • Nicole Alexander

Very scientific, but had good unbiased information. You can just read the bold parts and still benefit from the book. Not my typical style of reading don’t know if I’d read any others

  • Ana Milas

    Excellent book- must read!

  • Julie Johnston

I love Dr. James social media but this book couldn’t hold my attention. Loved the summary pages in the back. I’ll still stick to his Instagram. One of my
    fave insta pages to date.
