You really can't go home again.

Tait Logan is proud of the life she’s built for herself. Despite her world-shattering divorce, the absence of a pet, not having any genuine connections with other humans (apart from her sister Ava), and the fact that the remainder of her family is estranged from her life, she’s happy…Happy-adjacent, at least. She’s rebuilt herself through her photography; her dream career, the one thing she does still have.
So, when that career contracts her to do an assignment on her estranged family's home, Logan Range - a now famous ranch functioning as the setting for a popular show - she’s left with no choice but to agree.
Thus, Tait is bound, on a reluctant course back to her roots, and to the family she feels abandoned by... to the family that, seemingly, has had no interest in a relationship with her since her parents' divorce, when she was seven.
Henry Marcum has dedicated his life to the Logan family and to their ranch. He owes them for raising him, rescuing him, and for his life's purpose and opportunities… He also owes them for every hardship he’s inadvertently brought their way. So, when Tait Logan shows up after 20 years of near total silence, he takes it upon himself to protect the people he knows and loves.
It’s a rocky start when Tait and Henry first collide; he is naturally wary of her intentions, and she is more than perturbed by their literal collision - which results in her broken camera, during her first night on location, no less.
There’s no shortage of shaky ground here in the mountains and valleys of Idaho. They’re thrown off balance time and time again by their growing feelings for one another, and by the story of the Logan family as it becomes increasingly less clear from their perspectives. As they confront the past, theirs naturally get brought to the foray. They’ll have to weigh their feelings against their experiences of heartbreak, and decide if the potential for disaster is worth the risk that accompanies love.

"I want to love you until it's devastating."

    AHHHHH.

This book has depth that I wasn't expecting, as well as warmth, humor, and heart. The sweetest cowboy hero and most stubborn heroine ever. The other characters were also easy to love. My heart hurt for Tait about how lonely she felt at first, the sting of her husband's affair, her heartbreak over her divorce and the torrent of emotions she felt returning to her childhood ranch and estranged family. I was invested in both Tait & Henry's journey, albeit in a nosy kind of way, especially with those past issues and there was a clever twist I didn't see coming. This was a fantastic debut, with bingeable writing that I both savored and devoured.

"I wish you could see how you glow. How you brighten a room here every time you enter it. I can't imagine anyone, ever, losing sight of that with you."

Tarah DeWitt! This is your debut novel?! Girlfriend...you wrote a book! A dang good book!

What's there to say... I loved it! I laughed, I cried. I salivated over grilled cheese. And hooooboy, I've got the hots for a farmer. Gardener? Cowboy?

I'm mooning over Henry. Hen. Avenger-lumberjack. Swoon.

BUT! I also really enjoyed reading about Tait's growth to become whole again, be seen and loved. Rootbound is perfect for fans of KA Tucker and it is available on KU. However, this is one I would want to own! *adds to cart*

Slow to start and a simple, straightforward story but I totally fell for both Tait and the delectable, grumpy, sweet cinnamon roll that is Henry.

This also had one of the best epilogues I've ever read.

*The audiobook isn't listed yet so I'll switch the edition at a later date. Both narrators do a great job 👍

Many thanks to Tantor for providing me with the ALC!

I love this book! You get all the warm country feels in it. Tait is a recently divorced photographer who is told by her boss to fly out to a ranch to take pictures where a popular tv show films. Come to find out, the ranch is the one her estranged father owns. So Tait goes on this journey of reconnecting with family that hasn’t been in her life for years.
Tait’s story was so interesting. Watching her heal from heartbreak with her ex and trying to grasp how she feels about people in her life now, it was so well written.
And then we have Henry. A cowboy who looks like Thor and is grumpy and protective over everyone at the ranch. He is the true cowboy gentleman. I LOVE him!
Overall this story was great! It was well written and there was a twist i didn’t expect. I loved the humor. The spice scenes were amazing. The ending was perfect!

4.5 stars rounded up. Docking half a star only because the book could use a bit of tidying up, editing wise. The story itself is a 5 star read.

Rootbound is an absolute delight. I loved Tait and Henry’s chemistry, the slow burn with incredible payoff (seriously - 🥵🔥🥵), and the fact that they actually COMMUNICATED!!!!! Like adults!!!! I was actually giddy as I got near the end of the book and realized we wouldn’t be getting the classic “forced conflict just to get back together in the next chapter” schtick.

I loved how Henry was willing to be patient. How he understood what Tait needed and was willing to give her the space to find it. I love that she went home, only to realize the place she left was home along. I loved that Tait reconnected with her family and let go of the resentment she had been holding. Gah. I just loved it all.

It gave me major Yellowstone vibes and I DEFINITELY pictured the actor who plays Rip as Henry. 🥵

“A picture, a dream, a story – whatever it is that causes that initial inspiration, that tiny thing IS the spark. It is absolutely paramount that you see that, and that you still be proud of pursuing your dreams…
“… And also turn left here.”

Tarah made me feel all the things with this one! I love how she writes such grounded and relatable female main characters. Tait (our MC) was so candidly herself and I really enjoyed her character growth in this one. Plus the Henry of it all didn’t hurt either 😏.

The family dynamic was so touching while also being so bananas!! And the cast of characters was so entertaining too.

Ugh, this made me swoon, hurt and laugh so much.

    4/5⭐️

If you’re looking for a love story that is going to make you feel alllllllll of the swoony sappy mushy gushy feelings, you have to go read Rootbound right this very minute. I have never so badly wanted to up and move to the countryside to spend my days riding horses and romanticizing every aspect of my life.

Tait has such a great storyline in this book. She’s got some baggage and lord knows she can hold a grudge, but when you get past her walls? SUNSHINE. Complete and utter love and joy. Also, we have the same chaotic music taste, so I want her to be my bestie because road trips would be POPPIN. She takes every bump in the road with so much grace and I just love her.

But don’t get me started on Henry. This man is the blueprint of the man I want in my actual real life. Cowboy Thor? Yes please. Chis Hemsworth lookalike? Without a doubt. Enjoys home improvement projects? Sign me up. Makes good coffee and wants to feed his woman? I can dig it. Big and strong but has ALL OF THE FEELINGS? TAKE MY HEART YOU CAN HAVE IT!! He calls Tait sunshine and darlin and honey and I would like to propose marriage immediately. He is a sweet little angel baby and I have to have him.

Seriously though, Tait and Henry’s story felt so believable. Their love for each other wasn’t one of those Disney movie stereotype kinds. They just fell in real true love, plain and simple. I read a lot of love stories that are too fantastical to actually exist (which is fine and great - that’s what reading is for), but this is, I’m pretty sure, the first book I’ve ever read that made me completely wish and believe that I could step into the story.

    Y’all go read this NOW!

Tarah Dewitt is 3 for 3 for rating her books five stars. I fell in love with her writing after reading Funny Feelings last year (which is a favorite of all time).

Rootbound is her debut release and it has all the things I love about her writing. Tarah writes such romantic, soft romances that’ll just warm your heart. Her books are so well rounded with the romance, character growth and fantastic storytelling.

This book gave me The Simple Wild vibes (although not as sad). It has small town vibes, a heroine reconnecting with her Father and her roots, and a grumpy hero who doesn’t make a great first impression.

I’m so sad I’ve read all her books, but it’s full circle to catch up by reading her debut last.

    4.5 rounded to 5 stars

  • Inna

4 stars, but would have been 5 stars if not for a few small things.

Let me start by saying that this book was much better than anything I was expecting. It had a decent storyline, very easy to love MCs, and many well-written side characters. There were sometimes too many side characters to keep track of, but that didn’t ruin my enjoyment of this book at all. Did I mention that the MCs were great? The heroine is strong and witty. The hero is a bit of a grump initially, but we quickly see his marshmallow center. They had a really well-written relationship progression that wasn’t forced or insta.

I really would have rated this book at 5 stars if not for the heroine GIVING UP HER HOUSE IN HER DIVORCE to her cheating husband! This part pissed me off, and it especially pissed me off that her ex then went on to live in that house and get married to his AP in the backyard and have a baby in that house! She put A LOT of money towards the down payment (that she got from an inheritance) and the heroine just rolled over and let her shitty ex have it! He didn’t give her anything! And he never even got his comeuppance at the end! Nope, I like justice, and this was BULLSHIT!

Also, the hero did something similar with his ex. He let her get away with doing some really crappy things that hurt not only him, but others also. Both of the MCs were just super disappointing in this regard. Thankfully their characters improved in the present-day story.

Still a really good book overall. Super sweet epilogue with a HEA a few years out.

    Safe;
    Heroine celibate 1 year
    Hero celibate 6mo
Heroine divorced after her husband cheated and left her for his AP
Heroine has a few ONS after her divorce but she never came from any of those encounters 😒😒😒😒
    No OM/OW drama at all
    No scenes with OM/OW
No cheating between the MCs, but there was plenty of cheating in this story in general. Besides the heroine’s ex, there was also quite a bit of focus on the cheating that occurred between the h’s parents in the past.

♡ Spoiler Free Book Review ♡

This is my first book by Tarah DeWitt and after reading this one, I’m excited to read more!

This is a beautiful story about bravery, vulnerability, family, love, forgiveness and closure.

If you need a good comfort read that focuses on love and family, definitely check this one out.

The story follows Tait after she gets a 6 week assignment at work to photograph a ranch only to realize, it belongs to her estranged family.

My favorite parts of this book were the ones with her family. They were so fun and hilarious. The game night scenes had me laughing out loud. To see her be fully embraced by those she hadn’t seen since she was a child was beautiful.

The main couple communicates like adults and it’s so refreshing. They also have such fun banter!

There is spice, but it’s a slow burn. The wait is totally worth it 😉

    ✨ Slow Burn
    ✨ Cowboy- Ranch setting
    ✨ Dual POV
    ✨ Family drama & dynamics
✨ A twist at the end I did NOT see coming

  • Jo

I think I enjoyed the family plot more than the romance itself? Although Tait and Henry were great too. I really liked the final twist, I never saw it coming.

  • Drache

I loved Funny Feelings and had high hopes fir Rootbound, but....
    Aaagggghh I'm quitting at 82%.
The first chapters were intriguing, but the further I got the messier the storyline evolved.
The romance between Tait and Henry (I loved him!) was the constant good and beautifully done part of the book and I would have loved to see how it played all out in the end, but I had so much issues with the rest of the book:
-Taits relationship with her estranged father was not comprehensible to me (no contact from age 7 to age 28, but it's all excused and explained so easily?! Tait even called him Dad after 2 weeks? Kissed him on the cheek? Was glad he explained that the issue had been his selfishness (wich I didn't get) and he didn't lay the blame on her mother?). The fact that Tait and Ava were misarable with their mother was never mentioned again?
-the fact that she didn't want money from her ex in the divorce although she had put 150.000 dollars from an inheritance in the purchase because she didn't need the money?? And 2 years later she is forced to take a job because otherwise she would go broke?
-the inheritance- part didn't get a real/satisfying explanation on page either, Tait just acknowlegded it and moved on,
-Tait and Ava had the best sisterly relationship we were told, but how both behaved trying to punish the other without talking to them, or the way they talked when they finally got around to it, was irrational.
-Tait had in the years since her divorce not been afraid to take what and with who she wanted (meaning one night stands) we were told, but when she had sex with Henry it was her first orgasm with another person since her marriage? How was this not an issue that none of her one night stands had satisfied her or was this just a case of bad editing? Did they forget they had mentioned the previous one night stands?
-I didn't buy at all how her father 's family hadn' t once tried to contact Tait from age 7 on (for 21 years) and now they were full of love for her, and after some few days she equally loved them back, without a discussion just some flimsy excuses on their side? Getting to an satisfying explanation now after 82% when Tait already feels she loves them would be anticlimactic at best.

I won't rate this one because I wouldn't know how (the romance part was so great, Henry was phantastic, but the rest was a mess).

  • Mai

This book is packed with stories (and characters) but not overly done and I think it just proves how skillful Tarah is with her writing. The book is about self rediscovery, mending broken family ties, planting roots and flourishing, it's about healing, second chances, and love. All these stories are interwoven so beautifully together. Tarah has such a magical way of putting feelings into words, and if you've read either of her books you'll know what I mean.

    Things to look forward to:
    🌄 Dual POV
    🌄 Avenger-lumberjack-cowboy
    🌄 Grey sweatpants
    🌄 Playlists
    🌄 Impossible Questions
    🌄 Flirty banter
    🌄 The towel scene 😏
    🌄 Picturesque scenery
    🌄 Surprising twists

  • Kelly

One thing about my Tarah is she’s never going to miss with me. Her writing is just always impeccable IMO. She’s an all time favorite for a reason. Her stories just have so much heart but are also based in reality and rawness. This was delightful, I loved the setting and these characters. A charming small town romance & Henry…..THAT MAN 🫠 loved this so much

  • Caitlin (The Love Librarian)

I’m actually crying right now, because the ending of this book was such an unexpected surprise!

Rootbound follows Tait, a photographer who is sent on assignment to her estranged father’s ranch (which doubles as the filming location of a popular TV show). Of course, Tait isn’t excited about meeting her estranged family, given that she assumes they don’t care for her. However, Tait quickly realizes that the version of events told to her by her mom growing up is vastly different than what she is about experience with her father’s family.

On the ranch she meets Henry, who has been basically like an adopted son to Henry since he was in his teens. Henry and Tait don’t get off to the best start, but as they get to know each other more, they realize that while they both have trust issues, they recognize a safe place in each other that they’ve never had before. I LOVED how comfortable they were with each other, and their smex was full of the chemistry I saw from a mile away.

I admit, up until the epilogue, this book was a sold 4/4.5 stars. This was the author’s debut novel, so there were a few formatting things that I noticed and I felt like the pacing was a little off in a few places. However, the twist at the end pushed this to a 5 star read for me. It was a beautiful ending and made so much sense when you thought back about how the story first started.

Funny Feelings is still my favorite from the author, but this was a strong debut novel!

TROPES: small town/ranch; opposites attract; quirky family bunch; heroine is a photographer

  • Danielle Salazar

This story gave me all the comforting rustic feels of The Simple Wild and All Rhodes Lead Here. I love my contemporary romances to have some depth and this one checked all the boxes for me. I adored every second of it.

First off, I absolutely fell in love with the Logan family. For being under 300 pages, this story has a broad cast of characters (which was a little overwhelming at first), but Tarah did an amazing job at bringing every character to life. The relationships and dynamics felt so authentic — it made me feel I was a part of the Logan family.

Henry and Tait are just *chef’s kiss*. Henry is described as a cowboy avenger (literally yes, sign me UP) who is loyal, protective, and makes a mean grilled cheese sandwich. Tait is guarded, a bit stubborn, but has this infectious love for life and is so relatable. Their relationship is rocky, but filled with sexual tension and teasing banter.

There is a very obvious plot, but this is definitely a character-driven book. It’s about personal growth, overcoming heartbreak, finding new love, and reuniting family. My favorite type of story, honestly.

    READ IF YOU’RE INTERESTED IN
    - Contemporary romance
    - Enemies to lovers
    - Mutual pining
    - A cowboy-version of Thor
    - Reuniting with estranged family
    - Character-driven stories
    - Family drama
    - Emotional depth
    - Steam: 3/5 (frequency is minimal, but the scenes included are hotttttt)

  • Leah (LeahsLittlePleasures)

“I want to love you until I’m absolutely devastated. I’m going to.”

Tarah’s debut novel, Rootbound, is a rustic second chance, enemies to friends to lovers romance set on a horse ranch with dual POVs, a small town feel, Viking cowboys and big family vibes.

It has a soul stirring storyline with lots of unexpected twists and turns - some painful, others uplifting, but overall... this sense of healing. There's a significant focus on that as well as reconciliation, mending relationships, rediscovering yourself, acceptance, moving on, and of course, family, love, hope and new love.

I started this one in the mountains at the end of 2021 and scarfed it down in just a few days. I couldn't get enough of it and at the end all I felt was wow… I really need this to be a movie! 😭🙌🏻 It was beautiful and touching - and I'm so excited for more from Tarah!

I CANT BELIEVE THIS WAS TARAH’S FREAKING DEBUT NOVEL!!!??? Are you kidding me. Jesus Christ. She is one of my favorites for a reason, and I truly have never met a Tarah Dewitt novel I didn’t like!!!

This story was so beautiful and heartwarming. So much growth. So many chances taken. There was a journey that I really related to in my own way and I just absolutely loved Tait. It made this book so special to me that I could relate to a main character so much. And to see her feel similar emotions, and experience growth in such a similar way was amazing!!!

I LOVED IT AND HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this book if you are needing to feel some warm fuzzies!! Audio was 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Also, WOAH TARAH THIS WAS SO…HOT!? I was not expecting that 🥵😛🤭 THE SKINNY DIPPING. Henry was perfection & we love a grouch who turns into a big ole softie!!!! Praise for no third act break up.

Men written by Tarah DeWitt are in a league of their own. I am deeply acquainted with Meyer, Deacon, and now the sweetest dream.. Henry. The most loyal family man, lover of: gardening, dogs, and all things of taste from Grease to Mamma Mia! & ABBA.

As an essential part of the Logan family’s famous ranch he is introduced to the estranged daughter, Tait Logan, of the man who raised him while she’s assigned a six week long job that brings her back to the home she was taken away from years ago.

This is a connection that‘s ease yet complexity, simple yet messy, and beautiful yet inevitably devastating. All their effortless moments and interactions result in a love that make you question why we hold back from anyone and anything at all.

Layered within the romance is family reconciliation, truths of the past, and a woman’s discovery of where she’s destined to be after a wave heartbreak and loss.

    Loved it

What a debut! After absolutely loving Funny Feelings, I couldn't resist checking out DeWitt's debut novel, and it exceeded expectations. Quieter and more introspective, Rootbound is the story of a woman who (accidentally) reconnects with her estranged family, finding all kinds of love in the process. It's got the same kind of layered feel as Funny Feelings, deftly shifting between playful, chemistry-filled moments and angstier, emotional ones. The heroine is strong and resilient, pairing perfectly with a semi-grumpy sweetheart of a hero. It was easy to see the attraction between them, and I loved that the story took its time building up the relationship before making the plunge - though there were some VERY sexy, deliciously tense moments along the way. Sure, the story has a decent number of typos and the rougher feel that you often get with indie debuts, but DeWitt's talent shines through in a big way. I loved it!

The story follows Tait, a photographer who hasn't quite been the same since her divorce a few years ago. The end of that relationship exposed some things that Tait hasn't been ready to acknowledge, and she's been stuck in limbo ever since. So when she accidentally accepts a 6-week photography assignment at her estranged father's ranch, Tait is not looking forward to coming face-to-face with the family who abandoned her years ago. When she meets Henry, a man who has found family in her actual family, neither one is sure what to think. But as Tait and Henry get to know each other better, it's impossible to deny that they have a connection. Henry is a selfless, loving man, and ignoring their attraction seems like just as bad of an idea as starting up something when Tait has no plans to set down roots on the family ranch.

Though Funny Feelings and Rootbound follow completely different paths, it's interesting to see the similarities between them. Both feature compelling heroines and heroes who are SUPER swoony, loving and steady in all of the best ways. I adored Henry, and the more we got to know him, the better he got. I loved the sparks that flew between them. And I loved how the story - like Funny Feelings - seamlessly shifts between light, fun scenes and rawer, deeper interactions. The family aspect added plenty of depth, though Henry and Tait's romance shone as well. The sexual tension was fantastic, and the slow build in intimacy felt so rich. I really don't have any major complaints about this - I definitely noticed some technical writing issues, but they did nothing to hinder my reading experience. I devoured this as quickly as I could, and now I'm left wanting more from the author. As debuts go, this one was pretty great.

  • Nadia

This book was decent, but I found myself waaaay more invested in the family drama than the romance. I ended up skimming a lot just to get to the big reveal and the main reason for the h’s estrangement from her father was… anticlimactic at best.

    A few frustrating parts:

    - Tait allowed her cheating ex-husband to keep the house they bought TOGETHER without paying her a single cent because apparently she didn’t need the money. I really expected her to be a millionaire after reading that. Then 2 years later she’s worried about going broke. Girl WHAT are you doing

    - Her father and his entire family are suddenly so caring and eager to be involved in Tait’s life when they barely thought twice about her for 20 years. This was explained but the reason was very unsatisfying. You have to have a damn good reason for basically giving up on your daughter for a good portion of her life, and not just because

    - I hated Tait’s dad for not being in her life but it made me feel better that at least 🤦🏾‍♀️ so this man was truly irredeemable

    - Tait forgave her father way too quick and I was really hoping for some closure with her cheating ex-husband and ex-best friend but that didn’t happen

Moral of the story: this book just really needed some good grovel

  • M'Kenzee | mkenzees_bookshelf

This book now lives rent free in my mind and I am totally okay with that. Tarah Dewitt hit this debut novel out of the park! The way she was able to describe emotions, that often feel indescribable, had me tearing up at various points in the novel. The character development, the semi-slow burn, the dialogue - all *chef's kiss* perfect. This novel had all the best vibes of Yellowstone (without any of the gore) that I love so much - the ranch setting, the family drama, the love story between the number one ranch hand and the owner's daughter. Ugh it was all just so perfect. This book left me wanting more in all the best ways! So book 2 comes out like tomorrow, right?? P.S. that twist at the end had me like - WOAH.

  • Elizabeth

4.5 stars. Sometimes you read a book and there’s just so much truth in the fiction. This was lovely. A story of a woman who finds home. If only it were that easy in real life to show up at a long-estranged family and love and be loved.

I’m not sure I understand why the estrangement was so long. And it feels like it was resolved without a lot of change on the part of her family… but it was still lovely.

Some editing errors but nothing egregious.

  • Dani McLean

Immediately from the opening chapter I knew I was going to enjoy this. I highlighted so many passages that I know will stay with me, but none hit so hard as this:

“Henry, I want to love you until then. I want to love you until it’s devastating.”

I absolutely cannot wait for Tarah’s next release, Funny Feelings. I already know everything she writes will be an auto-buy from me.

  • Brooke -GraciouslyRooted-

I’m sorry.. WHAT!? How are there only 15 reviews and 45 ratings for this ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL BOOK???

I’m blown away this is a debut and can say with confidence this will end up as a top romance read of the year for me!

The writing was endearing, quirky, hilarious, and just nerdy enough I’d like to convince Tarah DeWitt to be my friend! 😂 I will happily read anything else she decides to publish after reading this book!

    Ok- now to the story!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED this story arc! Literally everything worked for me.
    -Small town country vibes
    -ranch life
-a cowboy that looks like Thor, (naked) bakes, gardens, loves animals, and has a heart of gold!
-a MC that is passionate, stubborn, silly, real, and confident!
-family drama.. but just the right amount! Trust me family drama stories aren’t my thing.. but this was mixed so beautifully with sass, hilarity, fun, and love I couldn’t help but be endeared the entire time!
    -darling animals
    -photography
-and a slow growing romance that made my heart pound and my knees weak. Henry has tattooed himself on my heart forever and ever.

Basically it’s my new goal in life to push this book on everyone and make them love it as much as I do! If you loved All Rhodes Lead Here or The Simple Wild this one needs to be on your TBR!!

“I want to love you until I’m absolutely devastated”

Rootbound is a story about self discovery, love and second chances. It’s about learning how to trust again. How to put roots somewhere again after a broken heart. It made me cry, it made me laugh, it made my heart so so full. The photography. The twists. Man, I really didn’t see them coming. The chemistry between Henry and Tait was *chef’s kiss* Henry was such a beautiful soul. Sometimes you just need to step back and see yourself from different eyes. What a debut novel, it was simply wonderful, you don’t want to miss it.

“My home, my life is with the people I love.”

“We take pictures to preserve and stop time. So I guess in a roundabout way, photography also helped me find myself, by shinning a light on my own strengths and character. Pictures do a great job of making the ordinary come alive.”
