Chapel Crest isn't for the weak. It's for those who wish to watch the world reduced to ashes and screams.

The Watchers went too far. Locking me up with the monster who tried to kill me eight years ago wasn't the way to win my heart. It was the way to break it.

When Seth comes to collect on the bet he made with the Watchers, I know I'm in for a world of hurt.

Because Seth Cain isn't the nice boy I once knew. He's a demon in this asylum from hell.

And if he finds out the Watchers have already claimed me, he could very well finish what he started all those years ago.

To make matters worse, I'm the target of more than just the cruelty of the Watchers and Seth. There are worse things lurking in the dark at Chapel Crest, and I don't know if I can overcome all of it.

None of this is about my sanity. It's about my survival.

Ashes is a dark asylum academy romance with multiple love interests and a girl who will never choose. Everyone is a little crazy at Chapel Crest.

    Dragging

So I was a huge fan of the first book and even read the in-between novella while waiting for this book. The story and premise was crazy but I love crazy so I was excited to dive back into this story. But Jesus now the story is just DRAGGING, I’m talking chapter after chapter on the same exact tone, nothing new happening, no highs to pair with the low, just low over and over. I don’t know what the author wanted to accomplish with this, keeping the tone as despair for SO long just makes it feel like there’s no pay off in reading. At the 56% point I had to start skimming, and then eventually I just skipped to the end because god. Now there’s like 3 more books left and I’m just not seeing how the story is going to stay interesting for that much longer…I’ve always had trouble finishing KG Reuss series’ because the story never knows when to stop. I don’t think I’m going to continue this series, especially with an unremarkable FMC. All the usual elements I love in dark romance isn’t here, it’s not fun or thrilling or a guilty pleasure (even though it tries to be), it’s just sad so I don’t see the point. 1 star.

I can’t put my finger on exactly why I don’t like this book. Triggers are not a problem for me, and in this book, there are many.

I think maybe it’s because it feels like the entire story up until this point is a high point (or at least feels like one). Usually, the plot in a story builds but in this story, it’s one traumatic experience followed by another and there’s never a time when the plot comes down so the characters can regroup before the next plot point. It felt sort of exhausting and trauma, followed by trauma, followed by more trauma. I’m wrung out.

  • Helen

This book felt like an extension of the first one and not in the best way. I wanted Siren to get her HEA. She endured so much and she didn’t deserve it. Then I start reading this book and my entire heart shattered. I didn’t think things could get worse for her and it felt like the people who were supposed to protect her were nowhere to be found.

This story is definitely a slow burn. Not just in romance but throughout everything. When they brought Church’s dad into the mix and the weird doctors I taped out. Home girl still wasn’t talking. The boys didn’t have their sh*t together. The plot felt like it was messy and all over the place. DNF at 60%

  • Kristen

    What a disappointment.

For context, I gave Church and Bells 4 and 4.5 stars respectively. I advocated for this series to my friends because I thought it was so compelling. But this entry and its direction -or lack thereof- was just a mess. This truly felt like the author knew what moment the book should end with, and everything leading up to it was just hopeless filler; by 50% I was skimming haaaard.

Church had ended with Sirena trapped in a coffin with Seth/Asylum. So to start Ashes with her having already been found and in medical care was a questionable choice. The majority of this book focuses on the Watchers and how their inability to reach Sirena impacts them, and I feel like the minor glimpse we got into how they found her didn't do justice to the turmoil they dealt with.

Frankly, this book was just repetitive and dull. The quality from the first two books did not continue into this one and I went from rooting for Sirena and her guys to wondering why the hell anyone likes each other. Ashes, who was my favourite of the group in the first book, became an empty husk of a character. None of these men stood apart from each other; if I forgot the chapter title, I couldn't tell whose perspective I was reading unless there was mention of Ashes' lighter or Seth's inner voices.

There was also a rapid escalation in the tone that felt like whiplash. We knew Sully was a questionable, likely perverted man. But the things he was taking part in? How did we go from him swatting someone with a ruler to that? We also knew that Jerry used to beat Sirena, but I don't recall anything about him going further than that, and yet now he's signing her up for some truly revolting, public activity sorta scenes? I know the guy wasn't an upstanding citizen but damn.

I truly do not know how the first two books and this one were written by the same person, and I have no desire to continue with this series.

The way I stayed up until 3am for this book- bro it’s like a completely different book.

This is just torture porn. And it’s not even well written. The first book was so good wtf happened

OKAY so here’s the thing. i am really enjoying the series but this book felt a little flat to me.
most of the book was spent following the boys without sirena because she’s stuck in the care ward, if it was like 25% or even just less than half it would be more bearable but it felt dragged on.
also, we saw A LOT happen to stitches and my heart felt for him 😭 poor baby is traumatized.
i didn’t care for her sister addition… like why is she staying in that house? why didn’t she just sleep in Sirenas old dorm? especially because she wasn’t even staying with her harem before….. idk i just really don’t care for how close she’s getting with them even though they mention that they don’t see her that way. i don’t care to read how everyone of them think “she’s beautiful and fire-y” like ok????? who gives af what you think about her
also I LIKE SETH/ASYLUM??? unpopular opinion apparently 😭 like yeah he tried to unalive her but let’s be honest all these guys are toxic!!!
OKAY SO HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ABOUT WHO THIS MIRAGE PERSON IS !!!

•someone said seth’s twin??? ok sure maybe i could see it because the communication
    I THINK ITS ANDREWS!!!!!!
think about it, he’s the only one she felt safe with at first and it’s been mentioned before that when it comes to her he gets weirdly angry and protective when he’s usually very calm and collected. (i think it’s like Seth/asylum situation and he has MPD/DID)
also he was one of the first to understand her even though she’s stoic so i think he can read her mind like seth can 🫣
    anyways onto the next!

Picking right up from the cliffhanger in Church, author K.G. Reuss has us diving right back into The Boys of Chapel Crestwith the next instalment Ashes.

Talk about being super and majorly emotionally charged.
Asheshonest to lawd completely blew Churchout of the water with the deliverance of the extreme emotions and feelings K.G. pulled out of you all throughout.
Kid you not, this book will tear you up, shred you into a millions pieces, having you completely destroyed with leaving you an extremely blubbering puddle of mess, considering the severity of the wringer that K.G. Reuss put you through.
So fair warning be ready to have your heart ripped out and decimated to nearly the point of no return, unlike myself who was not prepared AT ALL!
This came courtesy of the multiple POVs of the characters in which the story was told through.
By continuing on in the thoroughly in-depth exploration of Sirena, Ashes, Church, Stitches and Sin, it allowed us to see not only the development of growth, for some more than others.
But also following them upon the path they were made to venture upon, both mentally and emotionally due to the inner and outer demons at play, leading to a lot of highs and lows that never stopped pulling it out of you.
Something that wasn’t surprising, given how with nearly every page turn, the emotions were never ending from flowing right off the pages in an endless stream.
Ultimately resulting in leaving you a quivering mess right until the very end.

Ashestruly upped the ante when it came to the exploration of the intense darkness this story had us viewing.
Author K.G. Reuss had us delving right down into the raw, nitty grittiness that was the extremely sensitive subject matters brought forth from the topics showcased and discussed.
Making it no surprise the narrative carried a heavy load of tension and anxiety, on top of the major angsty-ness.

Yet again this psychological thriller had you riding a rollercoaster, but this time round it was a whole lot more crazier, chaotic and tumultuous than ever before.
From the suspenseful build up that was came from the action, mysteries filled with secrets, drama from the lies and deceit, leading to major turmoil.
It was a given that this deep dark, twisted and wickedly depraved story had you going through ups, downs, loops, twists and turns, with the addition of obstacles and hurdles thrown in the way.
Resulting in a nail biter of a story, that reeled you in, and dropped you down the dark abyss that was Ashes.

SPEECHLESS again, K.G. Reuss had me at a loss of words when it came to the cliffhanger delivered.
Although it wasn’t brutal like her usual cliffys, it was still mind blowing, from all that was said and done in the end.
After reading Ashes, the next book Stitchescould not come fast enough, with K.G. Reuss having me looking forward to seeing the direction she will take in the continuation of The Boys of Chapel Crestseries.

Lots of twists and trauma. The h is beyond emotionally damaged.

Am looking forward to next book to see what happens with Sin under Asylum’s tutelage.

    Book of Nothing But Frustration

No idea why this book had to exist or why everyone had to be tortured so much. The first book in this series was so good but I didn’t want or need Isabella’s story for book 2 and this book Sirena is an after thought and just abused constantly. It didn’t need to go this far to have drama and it was so ridiculously unbelievable and lacking any emotional depth that book 1 had it was super disappointing. Sirena was a real person with a fleshed out character in book 1 even if mute and here she talked more but was a shell of a character - completely lacking anything to connect to. Not sure I’ll continue this series even though I want the satisfaction of a happy ending and a relief from the constant torture. It makes no sense to me how these guys kill indiscriminately, and yet are helpless when being bullied by the headmaster etc.

You may not be ready for this book but you need to be because there are no words to describe the emotional and devastating gut wrenching feelings that is going to take over you during and after the conclusion of this highly anticipated Boys of Chapel Crest book 3! Trigger warnings are everywhere so please check those before starting this book. We all know the world of Chapel Crest is full of insanity, chaos, destruction, devastation, and disturbing behaviors; which is why we adore these boys and their protection/desire/need to protect what is theirs!

We pick up where Church (Book 1) picks up but now we are seeing the aftermath of Sirena from her encounter with Asylum & Sin. Sirena is now under the care of Headmaster Sully because her mom/stepfather have chosen his "treatment plan" to bring Sirena back from her demons. We all know Sully is a major creep and has his own sickness that he uses the medical ward to continue his mental, physical, and sexual treatments of his patients. That entire place is beyond messed up and you will become infuriated at the way Asylum, Sirena, & Stitches are treated while under his "care."

The emotions are exploding through every scene and interaction with our boys and their Sirena. They have to find a way to reach her but Asylum/Seth has won the bet and they have to give him what he won. This is both frustrating and nerve wracking because Asylum/Seth is all over the place and his constant riddles makes him a character that keeps you on the edge of your seat with every choice he makes. This is no different and you both love and hate him by the end.

Sirena is trapped in her mind again but this time the memories are of her trapped in the coffin and screaming for Church. She doesn't know what to believe or who to trust but she has to find a way out or she won't survive. Her emotional distress is so hard to read. She is fighting so hard but there is so much against her...However, her boys will not let her be hurt again if they can help it. She has to have trust in them and their love otherwise disaster will strike! She has to trust in the process or she will be forever lost!

Church, Ashes, Stitches are all losing their minds over Sirena being out of reach and Sin vanishing every time they try to formulate a plan. Everything is challenged in this book. Their loyalty, their love, their devotion, their temper, their resolve, their anger, their needs, their sanity (what little they have), and what that all means for their future.

K.G. Reuss has delivered a phenomenal second book in this amazing series. You will be left with more questions than answers but that is why we love her writing so much. She challenges our safe zones and pushes our boundaries by creating the Chapel Crest world for us to dip our heads in see what all the crazy is about. This story will captivate you from the first page to the last. As always, we are left with a huge cliffhanger and jaw dropping reveal that will leave you pondering what is going to happen next. Happy Reading!!!

****If you haven't read Bells I would highly recommend reading that book before jumping into Book 2. If you don't there are things that will be revealed that would make total sense having read Bells first. *****

I don't say this lightly, but this is one of the most jaw dropping and heartbreaking books KG has ever given us. I spent the first few days of this week rereading Church all over again and fully immersing myself into this chaotic and corrupt world, and well, if you thought Church was bad.. Get your tissues ready because Ashes is going to break you. Repeatedly.

We open quite literally right after the events of the last book, and the hits don't let up at all -- each one more devastating than the last. Because of the actions of SOMEONE (who shall not be named) the Chapel Crest boys are falling apart, and Sirena is more locked in her head than ever. What happened to her catapulted Church, Ashes, Stiches, Seth and Sin to all new lows, and the absolute destruction that followed -- there's just no words. My heart was physically hurting in a lot of these scenes, especially in regard to three of our main characters. I can't wait to see what will happen and next, and see if our girl will rise above the lock she has on her mind and oust all of her demons once and for all. Especially with all those that love her by her side.

I will say you absolutely need to heed all the trigger Warnings- they are there for a reason, and damn near every trigger possible is within these 400+ pages. It will haunt you, ruin you, infiurate you, and wish you had a Pyro side all of your own. I can't wait for all the corrupt POS's to get what's coming to them. I'll be cheering SO loudly once that happens, and I know KG will make it glorious!

This is hands down one of my favorite series, and just shows why KG is one of my favorite one click authors! Go preorder now so you can stay up Friday night and binge!!

I will leave you with this little nugget: read very closely. There's hints of who is involved, who will become a major player, and just who will end up helping them. This is a shared world for a reason. *winks*

**I received an ARC of this book and these are my honest opinions **

  • Jacqueline McLachlan

Ashes is honestly one of the most beautifully heartbreaking, gut-wrenching stories I've read.

It follows on from where Church ended (make sure you read Bells in-between Church and Ashes. It adds so much to the storyline!).

My heart was already breaking for Sirena, but this book crushed it. The things she had to endure had me wishing I could grab hold of her and never let go.

There is also what goes on with The Watchers during this time, and each of them in their own way had to really fight to survive. Including Asylum, who, by the way, I feel like I know him so much more but also still have no clue half the time!

In true KG style there is a cliffhanger, although it's not too bad but it does have you desperate for more with so many questions needing answered I am on the edge of my seat waiting for Stitches.

This is a dark romance, and there are some heavy triggers, so please do read the warning KG provides. She hasn't written it just for the sake of it.

Ashes and Church really stood out for me in this book, with Stitches, Sin, and Asylum breaking my heart for different reasons!

Well done KG, your brain never fails to amaze me.

  • Kates

I needed a little more romance, and a little less pain, but the suspense????? this book has my mind a little fucked ngl I’m not sure what to even think or where my feelings are but they’re there!! they are certainly there!

the direction this took was so unexpected and I’m not sure I like it, but then, I’m continuously entertained, even if the pain got a lot. like for every hit, i needed a hug

but I love sirena, i LOVE cady, and love love love church (such a big ole intimating simp) ashes too (he’s sweet) and stitches deserve more, honestly

we don’t talk about the other two, nope no nada

4 stars (maybe a 4.5 for entertainment factor) but if you liked church (book one), I think you could enjoy this one

  • Hannah

    Devastating

Wow. This is a series that will rip your heart out and have you begging for more. I am holding my breath waiting for the next book.

Firstly - this is NOT by ANY means a standalone. You must read Church and Bells before you start this book. It will not make any sense otherwise.

Secondly - and I cannot stress this enough - if you have ANY triggers at all, check KG Reuss’ website for a comprehensive look at the triggers in this series. There’s an excellent chance you’ll discover yours on that list.

I keep reminding myself that this book is a stop on the way in the series and I need to trust the process (thanks, Asylum). There is still plenty to come in this rollercoaster and I’m here for it. It’s a simply amazing read that shakes you to the core.

Ngl, I shed some tears on this one.
    My poor baby Stitches 💔😭
    Also, who tf is Mirage🤨🤨
Def continuing this series so I can get some answers. But holy fucking shit this one was dark.

  • Brittany D.

    What?!?!

OMG I legit binged this all today and it barely released today it’s that good. The story definitely makes way more sense if you read Bells first because you see the connections of why Sin handles things the way he does. But please go to the website read the full TWs to make sure this is something you can handle first. I will say though I wasn’t as messed up at the cliffhanger that we know is always coming at the end of KGs books lol definitely Church messed me up more at the end. However it left my jaw on the floor with so many questions and I’m so sad that I have to wait now. Totally worth it though like always with this chaos universe.

  • Chloë

I adored Church. Adored! Ashes was not the continuation I expected, and can only hope it picks back up in the next book.

  • Emily

    4/5 ⭐️
what the fuck did i just read? this is not at ALL what i thought this book was going to be. in no way was i prepared for what this book brought to the table. i am just so disturbed by what all happened. it also for sure dragged in the start, but picked up later on - which is why it's getting 4 stars instead of 5 :)

can we talk about THE ENDING...what the hell. i am just so confused haha. can't wait for stitches book to come out because i need answers ASAP!!

this book was definitely darker than church was. there were some scenes that made me sick to my stomach, actually. make sure to check TW's before reading and remember that it's okay to take a break!

  • Enni (on hiatus) ✨

First of all, I have to question the name of this book. From what I understand, each book is named after the character it focuses on the most despite having POV from several different characters. The first and second book (Church and Bells) were aptly named and made sense. However, I think that this book focused way more on Stitches and Asylum than Ashes. I understand that Ashes might not get a huge role in the series unlike some of the others and that’s why this was his book but, in my opinion, it still should have concentrated on him more.

”Malachi, as you know, tried to kill himself in your home. We hoped he’d be on the mend by now, but because of his mental issues, it’s not worked out that way. His brain was without oxygen for a little too long, and it’s caused him to start having seizures and hallucinating. Last night, he hallucinated that we wanted him to hurt himself. So he broke free and managed to get hold of a scalpel then he tried to cut his tattoos off his face because he was convinced he’d be released from here if he did.”

The book picks up where Church left off with Sirena locked in the tomb with Asylum and the watchers (sans Sin) having found her. Despite screaming for Church in the tomb, she is now catatonic and does not seem to get better, even though her family comes to see her as well. Sirena’s mom wants to take her back home but, after a debate, it is decided that she will stay in Chapel Crest. Sirena’s stepdad gives Sully the authority to admit her to the hospital wing and try to get her to break out of her catatonic state.

At the same time, after realizing Sirena’s condition, Stitches tries to hang himself and ultimately, gets admitted to the hospital wing as well. Even worse, since Asylum won the bet and got Sirena to scream, the watchers are forced to release her to him.

Most of the book is focused on the events in the hospital wing with Sirena, Stitches and Asylum starring and, on the side, to the others’ life outside at the same time. Even though, it is mostly focused on them trying to get information on Stitches and Sirena. This part of the book seemed to last forever and, at times, I was even a bit bored since nothing new seemed to be happening. Although, I suspect there was some heavy foreshadowing to future events and the coming books which must also be why some of the events inside the hospital wing were only vaguely described.

I was a wicked guy with a soul made of pitch, but Everett Church? That man was the face of pure evil.

This book has an extremely strong mental aspect compared to Church (or Bells). I can handle blood and gore but I have to admit I got chills from the mental aspect in this book.

There were a lot of TW worthy events going on in this book like somnophilia, sexual abuse, rape, drugging, violence and self-harm. I personally love TWs but this series is definitely for the weak.

There are also several sub-plots and plot-lines going on at the same time. I have to admit that the writing is brilliant, both in terms of the actual writing (which is masterful) as well as how the book is written. Although, I would imagine it is not the easiest book to listen to due to all the plot-lines because some of them might be easy to miss on audio (at least to me).

Life would only get harder now.
But I had no one to blame but myself.

The biggest thing that bothered me in this book was Sin. I mean, despite the obvious, he is an idiot. He listens to Asylum and his threats instead of coming clean to his friends and just expects everything to end up well? How stupid can a character be?

I didn’t know what the hell was wrong with me. I’d been trapped in a coffin overnight with Asylum. He’d tried to kill me years ago… and yet, he was who I wanted. Seth. Asylum. I’d snapped. I’d completely lost my damn mind in that box.

Also, I cannot understand how Sin was the only one who realized Asylum was the one that tried to kill Sirena when she was young and that Sin was the one assisting Asylum with Sirena in the tomb?! Especially with how both Sirena and Sin behaved the time that Sin went to see her in front of everyone else.

Sin was acting sketchy af throughout pretty much the whole book and Church even noted it on several occasions. Still, his thought every time was that he did not have any time to find out what was going on with Sin because he needed to focus on other things, like finding out who assisted Asylum. Oh, the irony.

Ah, fear. More powerful than love it would seem because now my forever girl only lived in fear because of me.
    I didn’t like that.
    But I also loved it.

There is also some heavy foreshadowing on Asylum / Seth in this book. I am starting to think they are twins, share some crazy ability to read each other’s (and sometimes some other people’s) thoughts. Since they are portraying one person, the other is free to roam and create havoc. Please let me know if anyone else has thought the same after reading Ashes!

Oh, we cannot forget that Cady came to Chapel Crest! I love what she did to end up there. I would love to believe it means she will end up together with someone, maybe Bryce?

All in all, this book was riveting and I cannot wait to get further in the series and read more of the author’s books! The writing is extremely pleasing to read, the world and story building and extremely well done and the characters are interesting. What’s not to love in this series (at least for me)?

  • Courtney

    Ahhhhhhh!

Wow. What a powerful continuation of the Boys of Chapel Crest! Lots of emotions in this one and in true K.G. Reuss fashion, a crazy cliffhanger! I can't wait for the next release. So good, highly recommend ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

So I thought last book was fucked up right? Yea well fuck all the way off to one of thee most evil Authors I've come across. Like seriously. I was hooked on this series book one, then fucking ate this entire book up in less than 12 hours. Like COME ONE!

Shit went down in this book. I mean ... fuck... This gutted me. When I thought shit couldn't get worse, the author was like nah bitch - watch this... The way my jaw hit the floor - the freaking plot twists and some of the most unexpected shit ever . My head is spinning and I think I only called one fucking thing in this book. Maybe... I can't believe I had as many feels as I had... ugh. UGGGHHHHH - I want to spell them all out because I went into this book hating a character, then omg the feels, and now I seriously don't know what to do.... I'm scared though - I see a little light at the end of the tunnel and This Author is mean... She doesn't play nice at all and I know ... I KNOW this is far from done...

Anywho - I said it last book - check the trigger warnings. Cause this really gets bad folks (whatever judge ya momma - I'm LOVING this shit) and gets very intense. This book left me with a shit ton more questions than answers. This book was also suuuuuper low on he spice scale but I barely noticed.. yep me.. Can you fucking believe it? I have so many questions -- The bad guy (s), this can't be over - The new guy? - what the FUCK! Aaaaand the ending, are you fucking kidding me?

Now that I knew what I was dealing with - this book is a solid 4 stars. I'm anxious for what's to come and I'm obviously diving into the next book. Buuuuut I know I'm gonna be pissed because I'm sure there will be another ridiculous cliffhanger... pray for my sanity - ok well don't cause I like it here. Just pray that I come out of this no more crazy than I already am... yea - that seems like a good compromise 😏😏 - At least I'll have one more after the next before I have a meltdown.. lol

    • seth??? asylum?!?!?

“Seth isn’t the one who beat you with a shovel and tried to kill you. That was me. Asylum. Seth would never harm a hair on your head.”

“That’s the hardest part,” he finally said. “What’s that?” I took the rabbit off the spit and tore a chunk of meat off, popping it into my mouth. “Not the killing. Not me being dead. It’s that no one would miss me. That’s sad, isn’t it, Dante? That no one has ever cared enough about me to miss me?”

"Everyone I loved left me. Now, I knew why. It was because I wasn’t worth staying for. But this time. . . I’d fix everything. Then I’d say my goodbyes. Forever."
    • p.s. i fucking LOVE cady. exhibit 1A:
Cady: I don’t need her to have a broken heart on top of the shit she’s already dealing with. Got it, shrimp dick?
Sin: The fuck? Shrimp dick? I don’t have a fucking shrimp dick.
    *5 minutes later*
Sin: Fuck that. Fuck you too.
Cady: Unlikely to happen with a shrimp dick.

Holy freaking heck was this incredible. Even better than the first book, and that book was so good.

Again I thought the decision not to give Sirena that many chapters was a brilliant move on the authors part. It added so much to the story that we didn't know much more than the guys did. I loved it because it stands out among so many other books. Usually books are mostly from the heroines pov.

Oh Stitches. Oh Church. Oh Ashes. I still love you guys. Especially Stitches, my heart broke for him. The guys went through so much in this but even still their love for Sirena never wavered.

I'm not sure yet if I should love or hate Asylum. I think I like him. I might regret saying that but for now I really like him. I'm really curious about how he knew everything and the riddles he speaks in added so much suspense about what is gonna happen in the future. I thought he was really well written. Actually I thought all the mental health aspects were really well written.

This book was a wild ride. I'm still not sure of everything happening but I'm here for it and I'm loving it.
