The Great Escape (Tumtum and Nutmeg #2) Reviews

  • Traci

An enjoyable return to Tumtum and Nutmeg, though slightly less fun than the first story. The General is such an unlikeable character that it's hard to care about his rescue.

  • Tarissa

Extremely cute story about a pair mice who think they live the simplest of lives, but who actually have some of the wildest adventures! Tumtum and Nutmeg once again form a big plan with their friend General Marchmouse... this time, to save the General's life after he makes the wrong decision to play in the children's attic.

Such hilarious scenes that young readers will enjoy! The author does such a good job with making everything "mouse-sized" and extra adorable.

This is the second book in the Tumtum and Nutmeg trilogy. We loved the first one but only liked the second one. Had our expectations not been so high after the first one, we would have probably enjoyed the second one more. Still, it was worth reading. :-)

I have read one of the later books in this series. This was slightly better than that one.

There is quite a lot of action in this story. Some of this seemed muddled and was hard to imagine. The story never flowed for me. There are some grammatical errors that I noted too. The story just never fully caught on with me. It was never terrible but I felt it could have been improved.

The fact that a lot of the story is based on a character that is not very likeable is a problem too. I wouldn't recommend this series based on the two books I have read in it. Neither of these have been terrible reads but they also lack a reason to recommend them.

This is the most delightful book I've read in a very long time - from the beautiful cover design to the line drawings, the adorable characters & the very original story line (with quite a few twists & turns), it has been a total joy reading this to my daughter - I have now bought all the other titles and am looking forward to many more enchanted bedtimes

the first book was way better.

  • Janae

    General Marchmouse annoys.

I listened on Audible. The reader is excellent, but the recording is a bit soft, or perhaps his voice is too low to listen along with a running mixer in the kitchen, for example. :) I liked this sequel better than the first book, which I really enjoyed. These are really sweet. I totally relate to Nutmeg! lol. She doesn't like adventure, and enjoys quiet days at home cooking, and yet she keeps finding herself adapting to high-charged situations. I think I liked this one better because it didn't caricature the adults as fools quite as badly as the aunt in the first one. And the idea of ballerina mice wearing beige "camouflage" tutus bouncing on pogo sticks to rescue a stuffed-shirt, pompous general-past-his-prime is just hilarious--the funniest imagination I've had in a while. Once again, there may have been a curse word earlier on...not sure. I wasn't actually reading the text. :/ We have books 1-3 real books, and 1-2 and 5 on Audible. I'd like to get another 'set' book in the series. These are worth having.

Nutmeg and Tumtum are weirdly addictive. These books are surprisingly (maybe?) dark and serious, leading to some glances between my wife and I as we read them aloud to the kids. But they are about mice, and sometimes mice on pogo sticks, so yeah.

  • Henry Douthwaite

Great book. My 5 year old loved it.

  • Linda Hanson

I liked this one even better than the first. The action moves very quickly along with further fun from Tumtum, Nutmeg and the silly General Nutmouse.

  • Kristyn

My boys love these books. They beg for more chapters and crack up at the antics and ask a zillion questions.

    Read-aloud, boys, ages 8, 6, 3.

  • Aimee

  • Sarah

Adorable, of course! Read to Sarah Grace. (3rd time to read it aloud)

  • Kara

Read-aloud with the kids. My boys liked this one a lot more than previous Tumtum and Nutmeg stories we’ve read. It’s well-written and had a lot of “adventure” to keep them interested.

  • Rebecca Nead

3.5. Not quite as fun as the first, but still adorable.

  • Lilli Gilliam

These books are extremely cute and fun!
