"Rivers connect people and places. They carry water and nutrients to areas all over the globe. They provide a natural habitat for many of the Earth’s organisms and they provide travel routes for exploration, commerce and recreation. If they are very long, they may cross international borders as they flow from their source to the sea. To travel down rivers of this length is to travel through different languages, societies and cultures. [...] The settings for the poems in this book have as much to do with the Rhine and the Danube as they have to do with our shared interest in culture and language. Each of us has a personal connection to these rivers. Just as a river brings with it an exchange of raw materials and products as one country exports its goods to another, so we have been enriched by our own collaboration as we have shared our insights about culture and language together."
