The Crayons Trick or Treat Reviews

  • Jon Nakapalau

I can see this book becoming a T/T favorite for small children. Just the right book to read before you head out; sure to bring back fond memories of this special time in the years to come. I really like holiday books like this that help 'anchor' us to family and friends.

  • Ash Bringmann

HAPPY AMERICAN CHEESE MONTH YA'LL (Happy Halloween... Boo!)

  • Joanne Zienty

Love the story, as usual -- but hated the small format of the book -- it will get lost on a library shelf.

  • Stefanie Kellum

*I read a digital ARC of this title from the publisher via Edelweiss.

  • Elizabeth

This book actually had me laughing out loud.

  • Kayla

    Hilarious

  • Doris Ware

    Really cute and funny.

  • Felicia Moore

So funny and cute! Read it to the girls!

  • Suzie Buzzbea

Cute book, but it wasn't my favorite of The Crayons books. A fun book for Halloween.

  • Isabella (The Feminist Bookworm)

I know this is a picture book, but I'm saying this as a children's bookseller who loves The Day the Crayons Quit: this was kind of dumb.

"The Crayons Trick or Treat" is a laugh-out-loud story, ideal for families looking for a fun, fall-themed bedtime tale. Unfortunately, the book is roughly 5" by 7" in size, making it ineffective for a group read-aloud. While I am happy to have found this book to share alongside my youngest niece, I am disappointed I will be unable to use it as a youth librarian. Educators with access to document cameras could work around the physical constraints of the actual book.

The crayons go trick-or-treating but have difficulty figuring out what to say when someone answers the door.

Wearing costumes that match their colors, the crayons go out trick-or-treating, but one after another fails to say the correct phrase until Purple finally sets everyone to rights.

Even grumpy ol' me laughed when

The one drawback of this book is its small format (6" x 7"). In order to be used as read-alouds by teachers, daycare workers, and librarians, books need to be the standard picture book size (8" x 10" or 9.5" x 11"); otherwise, children have difficulty seeing the illustrations.

  • Panda Incognito

This has no substance and doesn't compare at all to the original crayon books. It's not particularly funny or creative, and the book isn't suitable for a group read-aloud because it's physically so small. Also, the handwriting-style font will be difficult for young readers to decipher at such a small size.

This a cash grab that doesn't hold up to the author's other work at all. I would encourage families who love the crayons to borrow this from the library instead of buying it.

  • Rubi

    Omgosh, this was hilarious! Lol
I don't really do Halloween books, as it's not a holiday I celebrate, but.....I've read the whole series except this and decided to give it a try.
To my surpise its less about Halloween itself and more about the Crayons figuring out how to collect the candy. They didn't seem to get the concept of Trick or Treat and it literally cracked me up.
    I'm easily entertained 🤣🤣

This wasn't bad, but it wasn't good, either. My 6YO liked it, but I'd prefer not to have to read it to him again. The funniest bit is the peach crayon saying, "I'm naked!" So they repeat the joke over and over until it's not funny anymore (to me, not my 6YO). Had it been a $5 board book instead of a $10 mini-book, maybe I'd like it more.

  • Jill

Really cute addition to the Crayon Books. These adorable crayons are dressed up for Halloween and not sure what to say when someone answers the door. They go through several scenarios until they come up with the right one to make the day tons of fun.

  • Ellon

    5 stars (I loved it).

    Well that was freaking adorable!

And my students will love all the times that peach crayon yells "I'm naked!"

The only thing I don't like is that it's a mini sized book. That will make it annoying to shelve.

  • Anna

My students are going to love this. Personally, I didn't really like it because it lacks all of the lovable elements of the original. It's cute and humorous but missing substance.

  • Lisa D

    Loved it!

  • Mrs Heidrich

    3.5 rounded up to 4

It's a cute story that kids who know the crayon books will enjoy as the crayons try and trick or treat, but have some problems!

  • Sandra

I was not as intrigued/charmed by this book as the other crayon books. I was also a little bummed that many crayons were not included. :(

  • Vicki

A cute tale of the crayons trying to be trick or treaters and failing humorously.

  • _Ex_Libris_Animus_

Another great one from the crayon gang 👍
