In this modern reimagining of Anne of Green Gables, effervescent extrovert Dan Stewart-Álvarez is surprised to find home and community in rural Tennessee.

Despite a life on the road with his free-spirited mother, fifteen-year-old Dan Stewart-Álvarez has always wanted to settle down. He just didn’t think it’d be like with his mother abandoning him in rural Tennessee with two strangers—his gentle grandmother and conservative, rough-around-the-edges grandfather. Here, he is forced to adjust to working the farm, entering high school, and hardest yet—reckoning with his queerness in a severe Southern Baptist community.

But even as Dan grows closer to his mawmaw, befriends fellow outsiders at school, and tries to make a new life for himself in Green Gables, he has to discover whether he can contend with intolerance and adapt to change without losing himself in the process.

From award-winning author Rey Terciero and Eisner Award nominee and illustrator Claudia Aguirre comes a new retelling of Anne of Green Gables about unconventional families, queer identity, and finding the meaning of home in the most unlikely of places.

A queer YA graphic novel retelling of Anne of Green Gables.

Dan doesn’t like being on the road with his free-spirited mother, always flitting from place to place, school to school, town to town. He longs to settle down somewhere and he gets the chance when his mom leaves him with his deceased father’s parents, whom he’s never met, in the foothills of Tennessee. He instantly connects with his mawmaw, but his conservative and ultra-religious grandfather is another matter altogether. Dan attends church with them, but he has questions about religion that his grandfather doesn’t like. As Dan makes a place for himself in the town, he also learns more about himself and who he wants to be.

I don’t expect anything less than amazing when I read Rex’s books and this exceeded my expectations. I grew up loving Anne of Green Gables so when I saw Rex was writing a graphic novel retelling I immediately snapped it up. I laughed, I teared up and fell in love with Dan Stewart-Alvarez. Make sure you read the Author’s Note at the end when this released June 25 aka Pride Month!

CW: homophobia, bullying, violence, alcohol abuse, alcoholism, domestic abuse, homelessness, religious bigotry, parental abandonment, death of a parent (recounted)

A fresh, modern retelling of Anne of Green Gables, this YA graphic novel follows Dan, a queer, half-Mexican teenager who is uprooted from his life and sent to live with his grandparents in rural Tennessee after being abandoned by his mother. With the support of his spirited Mawmaw and an unexpected circle of new friends, Dan discovers the meaning of belonging and creates an unlikely home for himself at 1600 Green Gables.

I loved this retelling so much! The acceptance of Dan's Meemaw and the path to a cautiously optimistic relationship with his Pop oozed over the pages, through beautifully drawn illustrations. Another love letter to the author's Abuela. I love how the character helped bring the town together, to agree to disagree. I loved the character's freedom to be himself, dressing as he likes while also taking the time to be respectful in other situations and toning things down...just a BIT, keeping in a pop of color here and there. I cannot wait to add this to my library's collection!

I would like to thank edelweiss and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. Dan and his mom are constantly on the move from one place to another. While on the road she takes him to see his paternal grandparents for the first time and leaves him there in a very small Southern town. He starts school and makes a few friends along the way but is also bullied for being gay and he can't see eye to eye with his grandfather. I really enjoyed the story and the art was beautiful.

Thank you Penguin Teen for the review copy!

This was so beautifully illustrated and written in such an enchanting way, and it is so unapologetically queer. This is a book that is about being queer & proud, something we desperately need now more than ever! I cannot wait to get a physical copy in my hands :)

I have not read this book. It's on my TBR list. It's not out yet so I could not have read it. I gave it 5 stars to balance out the person who gave the book 1 star despite not having read it either.

Goodreads should only allow people to rate books after they have been released to prevent this kind of spam ratings. People who truly care about the book will come back and rate it after it has been released or they can just note their rating as part of the review.
