Summer Blue Reviews
-
Beautifully illustrated homage to Country Australia, particularly the parts that have monsoonal climates.
-
This book successfully achieves what it sets out to do - to capture and celebrate rural Australia and its changing weather patterns from intense dry heat to torrential day. Trewin's poetic and evocative language builds in tandem with the heat - Monday melted into Tuesday...Tuesday dissolved into Wednesday...
as Marley, Moses, their dog and the cat try to cope with the stifling heat. Until "heavy clouds tumbled over the hills and rolled closer and closer."
Crosby-Fairall's illustrations are pure magic - sweeping skies and landscapes that reflect the sun and heat and then draw the rain down on top of the children's heads as they play and dance in the fat rain drops. The use of colour would inspire and art class, the use of language would inspire an English teacher so, although a book targeting a young audience, the quality of the overall production makes that a book that could be used across age groups.
A CBCA 2023 Notable Picture Book. -
A beautifully written book with gorgeous illustrations on each page bringing the Australian countryside to life with a child's view of the long hot summer and some much needed rain.
