NPR Road Trips: National Park Adventures: Stories That Take You Away... (Audio CD) Reviews
-
Interesting segments that offer a different perspective on the features and highlights of the most popular and unusual National Parks. Prompts you to consider all of the various goings-on in the park environment that make for a pleasant visit. It feels a bit behind-the-scenes, but really it's just the inner and outer workings that most of us take for granted and don't actively consider and appreciate as we take in the sights and sounds of our National Parks. After listening to these short selections, hopefully I'll be a more aware and appreciative visitor as I enjoy nature's beauty and marvels.

A collection of vignettes about National Parks featured in NPR.
-
A dozen or so very brief radio selections related to our National Parks: range from New Orleans Jazz to behind the scenes park services at the Grand Canyon to a historical piece on Gettysburg to road kill in Yosemite. A nice companion piece to the recent Ken Burns National Parks series on PBS, but these pieces were almost too short to be satisfying.

An Excellent Listening Experience.

NPR has searched its archives for stories about America's National Park System for this enjoyable collection. These stories don't just tell us about the park but tell us an interesting story in the park.
The stories vary from the humorous (the story about the smallest National Park - Thaddeus Kosciuszco National Memorial in Philadelphia which consists of a single room and covers .02 acre to honor this figure from the Revolutionary War) to the wondrous (Death Valley in full bloom after a once-in-a-lifetime rainstorm). The listener learns about the small city of employees that run Grand Canyon National Park, spooky tales of love at White Sands, an effort to preserve the music of New Orleans and a park employee who charts and maps the roadkill that he finds as he goes about his work.
The audio quality is, of course, excellent since these stories were originally produced for broadcast on NPR. Besides that, this is an interesting collection - the stories are not repetitive, they alternate in mood and length and come together to make an excellent listening experience.

A really short listen and a good, basic tour of some national parks.
-
Cute vignettes about some of the popular National Parks. They involve a person or event associated with the park and its history. All stories appeared on NPR radio programs. From the smallest National Monument/Historical Place to the great Yosemite and Yellowstone, this brief glimpse whets your appetite to visit.
-
I enjoyed learning different "behind-the-scenes" stories about some of our National Parks and I appreciated that it included some of the lesser-known parks as well. This was a quick, entertaining "read."
-
This is just one CD, but it will set your wanderlust on overdrive.
-
This brief audiobook is a collection of stories from various national parks. It was nice to listen to them and reminisce on my own visits to Zion, Death Valley and others.

These short vignettes from NPR'S Road Trip focus on the national parks. From the smallest park in Philadelphia to Yellowstone, the listener gets to experience the sounds of nature in this audio book. Animal sounds, geyser sounds, and even the eerie whispering of a ghost story provide a different experience of our national parks from just driving through and looking at scenic views. Topics as diverse as roadkill, dogs who kill pythons, and a wet Death Valley provide an entertaining, informative experience.

At only an hour long, this is a great listen if you like both NPR and National Parks. I listened to it through the Libby app from my library, and it was great to listen to while making breakfast this morning.

I appreciated this collection of vignettes about various national parks. It is a wonderful audiobook production, which I enjoyed as I traveled cross country. I certainly added more national parks to my bucket list--Death Valley and Yosemite, I'm looking at you!

Uninspiring.
-
Very short listen. Just a compilation of random radio stories, not very deep but nevertheless an interesting combination of episodes.
-
A collection of 8 minute NPR stories about national parks.
-
An excellent short collection. I just wish they covered more parks! We have some great ones west of Yellowstone, you know.
-
A compilation of stories relating to national parks. These held my attention less than the other collection I listened to. Still worth a listen though.
-
Quick listen, cool format!
-
Meh. This collection of brief interviews usually focuses on interviewing a person who works at a national park. It's mildly interesting, but doesn't go into a great deal of depth.
-
Audio compilation of several NPR shorts on the National Parks. About an hour of listening time.
I've heard a few of these stories in the past on NPR. I had hoped that these would go into more depth or offer previously unheard stories. Still, enjoyable enough. -
Brief selections about out National Parks.
