The full-color, all-ages hit series returns! In this adventure, Johnny Boo has been eating a little too much ice cream, and now his muscles have gotten all floppy and droopy. Why, they're positively floopy! Meanwhile, our friend the Ice Cream Monster has changed his gluttonous ways and now has big strong muscles, thanks to his new favorite food: apples! Terribly embarrassed by his own puny muscles, Johnny Boo sets out on a quest to find some happy apples that can give him strong happy muscles. But it won't be easy... especially if the Ice Cream Monster mistakes him for a delicious ice cream cone! And is that a television inside the monster's belly!?

Johnny Boo: Happy Apples Reviews

    The pro take:
Are ice cream muscles as good as happy apple muscles? Although at first this story seems like a thinly veiled lesson on nutrition, Johnny Boo’s story quickly turns into an adventure of silliness. Johnny Boo attempts to climb a tree, Squiggle bounces on the Ice Cream Monster’s muscles, and there is much confusion about the days of the week. During one of the most exciting moments, a giant apple gets stuck on the Ice Cream Monster’s head and shortly after being freed from the apple, the monster eats Johnny Boo and Squiggle! This is the third book in Kochalka’s early reader graphic novel series. Kochalka’s illustrations are simple and playful, using bright colors and broad, curvy strokes to communicate a basic, backyard world. There is a unique balance of zany humor and gentle tone in Kochalka’s Johnny Boo series. Libraries looking for calm, whimsical graphic novels which communicate the magic of childhood through the lens of a talking ghost will enjoy this title.

    //Written for someone else.

Honestly, I'm still kinda annoyed at the guy for putting platypi on our superhero SRP stuff.

Yes. Good. A thousand times, yes.

I too have floopy ice cream muscles. I too am scared of Wednesdays.

This fansty book is part of a series by James Kochalka. They are funny, cute and compltley out there. This is prefect for catching young readers attention. It is formated as a comic book and intended for all aged readers. In this book Johnny Boo has been eating too unhealthy and is losing his muscles. It bothers him the the Ice cream monster changed his ways and is eating healthy and has big muscles. So through the book he is on a mission to find apple to gain his muscles back. Although the story line was cute, I feel like the illustrations aren't worth five stars. I was being generous by giving three. I could definitely see using this book to encourage a student to spend more time reading if they find fantasy books interesting.

This is a fun little slapstick romp into the lives of some strange, ghostly and ice-cream drippy critters. I enjoyed the silliness and the humor, though it was a little absurdist for my taste. I mean, I love some absurdist adventures, but this one was a little off the cuff for me. Still, I appreciate his wit and exuberance.

The back of this book contains a blurb from my favorite comics critic, a man whose opinion I trust completely. If you have a job where you order books to put on library shelves, I think you should order a copy of this book (and the two Johnny Boo books that precede it).

    Best one yet!

  • Pinky

These Johnny Boo books are funny and AH-dorable.

  • Patti

it's not easy finding books that really capture my 7yo son's interest and make him want to keep reading. this was right at his reading level and was silly, funny, and cute. will find more!

  • Lionel

As with the previous Johhny Boo books, wonderful fun for young children and for parents, and very difficult to describe. Essentially books about friendship, foibles, and misunderstandings.

  • Paula Greenfield

An wonderful story book with lots of fun and surprises.

  • The Book Box

Mama read this book to me the other night. I like reading graphic novels.

  • Holly Letson

There was some annoyances in this book that I deducted a star for overall.
    1. Squiggle saying he was afraid to fly so high to get an apple from the tree, when he was unafraid of flying amongst the stars in the sky - which is much higher - in volume 2,
Johnny Boo Book 2: Twinkle Power .
    2. The Ice-Cream monster eating them after clearly staying they were his friends.
    3. JB and Squiggle acting like they could watch cartoons without even plugging the TV in

I'm generally a fan of Kochalka. This was my first Johnny Boo book, and I felt a little confused on what was going on, why the characters were acting in certain ways. I think this is #3 in a series, so that's kind of on me, but I also feel that children's series should give you enough context to not be confused. I'm also not a huge fan of the floppy muscles/focus on physical appearance.

Oh my God, I LOVED every second of my life while reading this cute and hilarious little graphic novel about two silly ghosts, an ice cream monster, bicep muscles, happy apples, and the days of the week! I wish I had a brain creative enough to come up with a world like this.

  • Lupe

This book was not funny nor silly. It was just dumb. I guess I didn’t understand the humor. Maybe that is why Johnny Boo books are not circulating in my school library. My kids might not understand it either.

  • Sarah

Cute, silly, funny, fluffy, goofy. All these words apply. Plenty easy to understand this book without having read the previous one.

  • Gabs

    Good book

Another Johnny Boo graphic novel for K-2 readers, another completely bizarre tale. The Ice Cream Monster has eaten some happy apples and grown huge muscles, whereas Johnny Boo has eaten too much ice cream and gotten "super floopy". This is quite a cute little book- I would definitely enjoy reading this to my younger children someday and hoping to elicit some inevitable giggles at the silliness of these characters. Once again, it's not my favorite book for young readers, but Johnny Boo is definitely a cute character. I'd almost be happier if these stories were in a volume- instead of buying these quick short stories. It's almost like an updated, book-instead-of-panel version of Garfield.

While I was at work today, I was tutoring a second grade girl who is in ESL. Today, this was the book she brought from the library that she wanted to practice her skills with.

This is a great children's story. Not only is it charming, has some educational flavour, but it's downright hilarious. It's even more hilarious when the little girl your teaching decides she needs to read all of Squiggles' parts, but then accidentally read mine because she's having too much fun.

Seriously, if you have a little one, this book is worth checking out for the giggles alone.

Johnny Boo is embarrassed because he has floppy and droopy muscles. He thinks he has eaten too much ice cream. On the other hand his friend the Ice Cream Monster has very strong muscles. He is now eating a lot of happy apples. Johnny Boo is looking for a very happy apple to improve the shape of his muscles. Gr. K-8

Cute. I love me some Kochalka.

Simple for simple minded people such as myself. <3 Or kids, I guess.

Cute, but nonsensical with a "moral" that many parents won't love that much. It's still funny and entertaining.
