My Skull is Full of Black Smoke Reviews
-
This is the second collection I've read by Tim Murr, following 2018's Neon Sabbath, which I really enjoyed. In fact my only real complaint about that book was it needed better editing, a fault that is mostly fixed in the more recent My Skull is Full of Black Smoke.
All the things I loved about Neon Sabbath are evident here too. Smoke is, like the earlier collection, a ton of fun. Murr's writing feels very cinematic; his prose is very visual - I can imagine everything is his stories playing out on the big screen. I would love to see some of these made into movies. Some of my favorite stories reminded me of a being a kid in a video store trying to pick out something scary for Friday night. For instance, "Night of the City Hunter," reminded me of a gritty 80's slasher, and "The Revenge of Shirley Vorkov" plays out like one of Lucio Fulci's surreal gorefests.
I can't wait to read more by Murr. His work is always a blast to read, and I look forward to all his future endeavors.
