Modern-Day Piracy Moves Under the High Seas

A band of modern-day pirates station-hops across the Indian Ocean in an old Russian submarine. Each attack bolder and more costly than the last, these pirates leave behind a trail of broken bodies, businesses, and stolen submarines at every undersea station they visit—and it's up to Lieutenant Commander Alex Coleman and attack submarine USS Kansas to stop them.

Teaming up with his old college roommate and not-so-gentle giant, marine lieutenant colonel Paul Swanson, Alex sets out to hunt the pirates. But these outlaws aren't in rundown little skiffs that are easy to track and find. They've got a genuine warship and the will to turn weapons against innocent civilians and undersea stations, and more importantly, they're good at stealth.

With time running out, Alex convinces his friendly neighborhood U.N. representative to rent a ridiculously expensive civilian submarine, with every bell and whistle a rich guy can dream of—and many Alex can't! Cut off from Kansas' support, he and the marines play bait for the pirates.

Alex isn't used to in-your-face battles. He's trained to push buttons and fire torpedoes, not for the messy and bloody stuff. His plan is for Kansas to nab the pirates before anyone can wave a gun near his nerdy face. But plans never survive contact with the enemy, and when the hunters become the hunted, can Alex learn a new type of warfare before it's too late?

This book is the prequel to the series War of the Submarine, available on both Kindle Vella and with book 1, Cardinal Virtues, on Kindle, paperback, and hardcover.

Before the Storm (War of the Submarine) Reviews

Before the Storm by Robin Roberts

This book is the most accomplished and technically well-written book I’ve seen this year.
The author, Robin Roberts, knows one end of a submarine from the other, that’s for sure. And that’s where part of the excellence of this book lies. The author knows exactly what they’re talking about. The research is inherent because the author has lived it, and sea water runs through their veins instead of blood.

The other thing that makes this so good is the faultline of dry humour running throughout the book. The characters are well rounded and gel together beautifully.

The story centres around modern-day piracy on the high seas. A group of black marketeers are stealing submarines, and it’s down to our good guys to stop them. The author captures the tension and claustrophobia of being submerged in a tin tube well.

This book should be held up as a quality standards marker for every author out there.
This book is a highly recommended 5-star read. I wish every indie author wrote as well.

A well-paced story of modern-day piracy, in which Lt Commander Alex Coleman, 2IC of the USS Kansas, is set the difficult task of tracking down and stopping the increasing number of thefts by a group of bad guys. Not just any old ransom-seeking baddies either, these guys mean business with a capital B. One of their number is a woman who thinks nothing of striking down those who stand in her way with a flame-thrower; a group of seventeen at one point, as the sickening footage captured on video at the group’s most recent heist from an oil-drilling station and refinery shows Alex and his colleagues. Something has to be done before things get any worse, and Alex is the man for the job, along with the group of Marines who are sent to assist him.

The story is set about fifteen years in the future and imagines the lengths to which these marine criminals will go. The characters are well-rounded, from Alex and Paul, his friend and partner in the assignment, to Danielle the pirate, a woman not noted for her sympathy and understanding. A page-turner, and highly-recommended.
