Kowloon Generic Romance, Vol. 2 Reviews

There was something slightly off, something weird in the first volume but I couldn’t put my finger on it. Well, to be perfectly honest I still can’t but now there is definitely something weird going on.

So Kowloon Generic Romance flirts with fantasy. And it’s good. It’s oh so subtle, like a bit of David Lynch gently crawled up into the plot, and it clearly spices up the slow paced blooming (or has it happened already?) romance.

Intriguing and melancholic, something different deserving to be given a try.

Another plot twist coming. Now I'm confused with the genre 😆 It's supposed to be mystery but a bit of romance?

This series continues to be my EVERYTHING! We get more weirdness in this installment… I’m looking at you, snake-tongue guy! He makes my skin crawl. I want to know MORE!! What’s going on?!! I’m still rooting for our main couple. They are just so stinkin’ cuuute! 💕

This series is utterly beguiling. It’s like a mash-up of Blade Runner and In the Mood for Love, but it’s also entirely its own unique thing. KGR has cemented Jun Mayuzuki as an auto-buy author for me. Her work is always beautiful and so tightly-plotted. The atmosphere is built so subtly and suits the story so well. The mystery and the romance of this story is engrossing to the point where you forget you’re even reading. I’m heartbroken that I have to wait so long between installments because this series is just perfect and truly a new all-time favorite.

I really want to know what's going on. I'm definitely into it, but I would have liked more clues in this volume after the cliffhanger of the first. The tone is really special, and gets you in a weird way. Kowloon is such a great setting, I just always want to see more of the city.

    August 2023.
A really interesting mix of nostalgia versus encroaching change in the name of progress, almost like Blade Runner x In the Mood for Love 1950’s Hong Kong.
It’s interesting, intriguing, a slow burn with little hints about the sci fi elements behind the slice of life vibes, barely present in volume 1 but taking more of a role in volume 2.

A huge criticism for volume 1 that thankfully did not occur in volume 2: volume 1 will go from charming throwback art to hyper-sexualized borderline hentai in some panels and it’s so jarring and it really took away from it for me.
I had borrowed volume 1 and 2 at once and didn’t see anything like that in volume 2, so I kept reading and enjoyed volume 2 much more. Since that sexualized art doesn’t continue and the sci fi part plays a bigger element, along with some more character development, I’m interested in checking out more volumes in the future.

The more I read the more I want to read. This story is truly keeping me on my toes, and I can't wait to find out more. I'm more confused than ever and I have thousands of questions. Also, interesting how the Adam, Eve & Snake imagery has been introduced, I'm very curious to see how it will be developed. So far I'm loving this series so much and I really recommend it to everyone; such a great mix of romance and mystery.

I THOUGHT VOL. 2 WOULD GIVE ME ANSWERS BUT INSTEAD I JUST HAVE MORE.

Okay never did I expect to love this series this much but oh my god??? It’s so good??

Me here thinking it was just slice of life, welp. It’s so much more.

    I need volume 3!!!!

  • Jimmy Ramirez Jaco

I need more of this immediately or I will never know love and nostalgia.

  • Hisgirl85

High 4 stars. This world opened up and in so curious.

  • Jillian -always aspiring-

And the mystery deepens! I’m curious where the rest of this series will go.

    Gwaaah, I love this series!!🥺

The second volume adds new layers to the original story: now, the question of identity pervades the pages—is it based on memories? or experience? who is 'I'?—plunging the book in the realm of the philosophical (I couldn't help thinking about the ship of Theseus concept while reading it). Oh, and it's getting kind of scary too.

What I like the most about KGR is that it does not try to rush things off, and instead takes the time to get us better acquainted with the characters, the mood, with some funny moments as well. And still, the story manages to continuously strike the reader's interest in each chapter, just not in a way that feels too forced.

As for the ending... I just //need// to read the next part.

    4.5

The embers of workplace romance that flickered in the distance, threatening to catch fire if not for the bounty of speculative sci-fi and domestic philosophy that so curiously doused them, return with greater force. KOWLOON GENERIC ROMANCE v2 is not a particularly fun, original, or even enjoyable volume. But it very much tells the kind of story the author wants.

The pain of living with an incomplete memory. The pain of nurturing an incomplete relationship. The pain of grasping and groping for belonging in a city that refuses to grant favors. The manga has twisted and turned away from being a herald or chronicle of urban unrest and more toward a kind of living museum collection of broken people in a broken world. That's not a bad thing, per se, but it's a narrative path that pulls readers farther from the comic's initial dramatic trajectory.

Kujirai finds herself at a crossroads: Is she the woman Kudou wants her to be? Is she the woman she thinks Kudou wants her to be? Is she the woman the medico-scientific complex desires her to be? Kujirai has no clue, and she regularly flirts with danger and uncertainty in her search for answers. KOWLOON GENERIC ROMANCE v2 pulls the story away from Kudou's point of view and focuses exclusively on Kujirai, her apparently faulty memory, and her varying attempts to reclaim her sense of self.

In the current volume, Kowloon drifts into the background. The city's grimy, labyrinthine walkways and sweaty shopping centers are of less consequence than other noisy affectations: TV commercials, a new restaurant selling lemon chicken, and a certain shady clinic doctor.

The manga takes an awkward and somewhat boorish direction when Kujirai catches the interest of the famous Dr. Hebinuma, the plastic surgeon and homeopathic huckster. Clearly, the Hebinuma Group is a cynical, abusive institution that takes advantage of unenlightened people. But readers are about to learn just how far (or, low) it's arrogant leader will go to obtain his next pet project. Kujirai is looking for answers, and her pals Xiaohei (twintails shopgirl) and Yaomay (seamstress from Caang Naam street) can only provide so much camaraderie. Kudou offers a few jealous glances, but is strangely resigned to non-involvement. Will the sharp-tongued snake of a salesman gobble up the young lady simply looking to define herself?

This volume was such a sensual, fun, and gripping read. The way in which the ominous tone encroaches on the romantic landscape itself and the people try to navigate their desires and identities just enraptures me. The volume starts off with a bang by showing us the original Reiko showing Hajime the ins and outs of the job and city, and much of what she shows off mirrors what he showed off to Reiko B in the first volume. I can't help but feel that Kudou has ties to the event that led to Reiko changing. And in this volume, Reiko tries on a pair of earrings to look more like her old self which really pisses Kudou off. So he's clearly left behind the feeling he once had, or at least is actively trying to deny them. Yaomay, a woman whose had plastic surgery from head to toe, takes Reiko under her wing, and they start trying new things out which she has wanted to do, but kept denying because of her attachment to Kudou or potentially subconsciously to who she once was. The second half of the volume introduces (fully) the Hebinuma Corporation, which seems to encourage changing yourself to reflect your desires or what you think others might desire in you. The leader is wicked heavy on the snake imagery, even going so far as to have a forked tongue and taste like apple. I'm super invested in what his grand game is and why they had Reiko marked as a preferred customer. Now that there are two boys in the romance??? ring, Kudou might start to change as well. I really enjoy how the story moves along at a slow pace, letting us just spend time in its world and experiencing life with the characters as they discover bits and pieces of odd things.

this volume’s focus on the plot and bringing in more characters meant less focus on the setting and atmosphere, whose depth (along with the central couple) made me so pumped about the first volume. still good, but just had less of the stuff that i loved, and the cliche slimy villain man was also kind of distracting. eager to keep reading, but also adjusting my expectations from a slice-of-lifey romance with some sci fi elements and minimal plot to a series that’s likely going to have more sci fi and plot focus than i initially imagined.

  • Estibaliz

3.75, but this volume was certainly more interesting than #1, delving into the surprise ending of that one, but also adding some more kind of sci fi elements to the story... whatever is happening with that doctor with the bifid tongue, and those big corporations that seem to control life here...

I appreciated the fact that the romance was kept somehow low key (even though the word Romance is part of the title), and the plot was more subtle and relied in new characters to move along the story.

Quite fun, the third volume will be visited in the future.

    Vol. 1 ★★★☆☆

Even though the story doesn't really progress, I still enjoy this volume. There's a looming sense of doom throughout that I find delicious. My favorite scene by far is from the beginning of chapter 15, in which . Just gorgeous.

  • Megan

Okay, at this point I'm fairly certain that she's some sort of clone of the original Kujirai, which is why she doesn't remember anything past a certain point and her wrinkles have no age, but the thing with the medical guy with the forked tongue is just weird and creepy.

  • ChelseaFace

Wow...yet again another ground breaking volume for me. I am stunned at how this series makes me feel. I honestly have several theories as to what's truly going on here, but who knows if in even in the same ballpark...I love it! I feel so excited to read this. I can't wait for volume three!

  • Amandine_crt

    J’adore!!!!

  • mghf

i didn't expect this series to have such an intense storyline. love that the other characters started to get a spotlight and importance to the story. the atmosphere here is always a bit off, but somehow it's comforting in a bizarre way. the arts, as always, very pretty.
