Injustice, plague, and evil stalk the land. Caught up in the conflict are three youths – a blacksmith, a squire and knight’s daughter. A cryptic map delivered in a wooden box with a mysterious key launches each on a perilous journey that tests their trust in a King they have never seen. Hugh seeks vengeance after the abduction and murder of his father, Marie rebels against the future chosen for her by her father, and Stephen struggles with low self-worth and courage in his quest for knighthood. Their lives intertwine as they endure attack, siege and loss while seeking to understand themselves and the world that is falling apart around them. Each arrives at a moment of truth where their decision could mean life or death.

i just remembered that i read this book last year and really enjoyed it. amazing christian fantasy 🤍

The story is inventive and the characters real. The plot is an allegorical depiction of the Christian life and has some good lessons about dealing with hardship and trusting God. Unfortunately, it also displays the lack of fully understanding the believers' authority over the devil and is built upon the major premise that God is "in control" of everything. There is one line in which one character acknowledges that "the King" doesn't purpose all random, bad events, but that He makes a purpose out of them, but even this character misses the mark as she stands up for the King while imputing good purposes in evil circumstances.
However, this is often how many believers see God. The author does a good job of depicting the lack of knowledge of the "Chronicles" or the word, that is true of so many. And the way that we too often try to understand spiritual truth through our thoughts, feelings, and experiences.
