Terror in the Shadows Vol. 22: Horror Short Stories Collection with Scary Ghosts, Paranormal Supernatural Monsters Reviews

There's a place for Grindhouse Horror and Splatterpunk, but here in the darkening of the year with its cold days and colder nocturnes, I seek out subtle Horror, the kind that creeps up on me before I realize, that sneaks on silent feet to breathe chills along my spine. Here are 12 fright-producing tales, newest in the wonderful series, so curl up by a warm fire (or a heater) and keep on all the lights.

Since I began reading the offerings from Scare Street, I kept wondering what it was about these stories that appealed to me so much. They are well written it is true, but so are many other books. After having read other reviews, it dawned on me that what keeps me coming back for more is the subtlety of the horror. So many horror stories rely too much on a constant flow of shocks. That isn't necessarily a bad thing but it tends to dull the reader's senses after awhile. These stories start out fairly tame and then gradually guide you into things you don't expect.
If I have anything negative to say here it would be that some of the stories, in my opinion, end a bit too abruptly. Perhaps it's just my wanting more of the story. This is a relatively minor thing I will admit.
These writers are talented. Of that there is no doubt. David Longhorn gives us yet another Sherlock Holmes adventure. I believe he may have been born a century too late. Add to this tales of shapeshifters, assassin butterflies and things that can render a human into lunchmeat in a manner of minutes and you get some fine quality entertainment. -
