Weird Tales August 1927 Reviews

Proper October reading with nothing in the issue rising to the level of classic but a good number of adequately weird stories. Otis Adelbert Kline's cover tale is part one of a serial. Kline's writing is always vivid and exciting in that unique pulp way and this story is no exception. Contributions from Quinn, G.G. Pendarves, and Wilfrid Branch Talman (unmistakably abetted by HPL) are all good examples of the magazine's forte. "The Dark Chrysalis" serial mercifully concludes. I don't know if it's a reflection on my taste or the shift in tastes but I've found this serial almost repellant in its attitudes and writing. Readers ranking prior issues have put it at the top of their favorites lists. In any case, I'm glad to be done with it.

'Creeping Shadows' (Jules de Grandin) by Seabury Quinn. 3 stars. A dead man is found who looks like he has been dead for a week when in fact he had only died that morning. The policemen who had seen the dead man earlier that day are being harassed so they seek the expertise of Jules de Grandin. The creeping shadows are assassins who have come from south of the border, as well as a clay bust de Grandin whips up and has dragged slowly in front of a window as a decoy. Not one of Seabury's best as it is easy to figure out the mystery. This story can also be found in 'The Horror on the Links (Complete Tales of Jules de Grandin, Volume 1)'.
'The Swamp' (poem) by Cristel Hastings. 3.5 stars. On Librivox.
'Two Black Bottles' by H. P. Lovecraft and Wilfred Blanch Talman. 3.5 stars. In a creepy church with an air of menace surrounding it, could the demonic sexton be in league with the devil. Necromancy, evil books, and an accursed cemetery all add to the air of horror. This can also be found in Audible, 'Eldritch Tales: A Miscellany of the Macabre', expertly narrated by Bronson Pinchot. Also, it is deftly narrated by Ian Gordon for HorrorBabble Productions and is available on youtube.
