The first book to document and emphasize the myriad voices of the free radio movement, from Black Liberation Radio in Springfield, Illinois, to Free Radio Berkeley in Berkeley, California. The first section, "Media Monopoly And The Rise Of The Free Radio Movement" includes contributions from Robert McChesney on the political economy of radio in North America and a history and analysis of the burgeoning pirate radio movement. The second section, "On The Air," includes interviews with and commentary by some of the key grassroots participants in micropower broadcasting worldwide—from Canada, Holland, Haiti, and Mexico, as well as America. The final section of the book consists of a comprehensive technical guide and how-to manual for going on the air, complete with schematics and "sound" advice.

Seizing the Airwaves: A Free Radio Handbook Reviews

Really could use to be updated as much of the info is over 20 years old by now, so this is more of a historical look at radio as it was in the mid to late '90s, but it's still an interesting read with some valuable input on the importance of community radio.

This book does a great job of covering the issues associated with running a small, unregulated radio station. It deals with community-based issues, explains how to set up your own low power station, and even details how to respond to the FCC should they go after you. For the subject matter, I can't imagine a better, but it is a specific subject.

my only disappointment is that the interview with some of albuquerque's rebel radio crew (our defunct pirate station) didn't make the cut. but we did make it into an issue of maximum rock and roll so i guess we passed the "punk" test...

an important early primer of the community radio or low-power FM movement with great interviews with mbanna kantako of black liberation radio, springfield illinois. all it takes is one watt of truth. all power to the people!

Constantly repeating over and over again. About community radio and commercial radio. This book is written in 1998. I wonder. Today's radio pirates don't use the radio. They do messages on social media.

Great book for anyone interested in the independent, low-power radio movement and free speech
