Greek myth owes its immortality - often in many varied versions - to the fact that it was cultivated for at least fourteen centuries in the places where it was born by a host of epic, lyric and dramatic poets, who wished to make of it a vehicle for the ideals of the Greek world. Many typical features of the Greek spirit are imprinted on the myth - a tendency towards competition, the affirmation of life, the worship of beauty, and the interest of the Greeks in man as man, leading to the creation of an idealised picture of him, which served to promote rules of life of general authority.A great many people from one end of the earth to the other have a mythology of gods and heroes. It is, however, only ancient Greek mythology which, thanks to its quality, has transcended every geographical and chronological frontier and has become a possession of the human spirit as a whole. The purpose of this volume is to provide a Mythology which is not addressed only to specialists - though without losing its scholarly character - but which will be accessible to a wide range of the public; a Mythology which will be read with pleasure by children and adults, by scholars and intellectuals, but also by ordinary people who, without any interest in the specialist questions of academic research, wish to be entertained by discovering what stories the ancient Greeks told about their gods and heroes and to enjoy in a straightforward manner the beauty of the ancient myths.

I've always loved Greek Mythology since i learned about it in 6th grade which is why i chose to read this book. From the Gods and Goddesses to Serpents and weird creatures i just loved the battles, being a hero, and most of all Hercules. In this book it does talk about his 12 labors but not as in depth as other books do, but it's still enough. overall I thought it was a very well written book, and from what I read it never exactly copies another book which is always nice. To me, the theme of this book is hard work pays off, one example of this is also when Hercules had to do his 12 labors, he was punished in the underworld for all of his crimes that he committed and once he finished them he was forgiven and set free.

I bought this book as a souvenir in Athens, Greece, in 2017. It has brief descriptions of the twelve gods of Olympus: Zeus, Hera, Athena, Poseidon, Demeter, Apollo, Hermes, Ares, Aphrodite, Hephaestus, and Hestia. There are stories of the major heroes like Heracles and Jason. It ends with brief summaries of the Trojan War and the Odyssey. I picked this up to refresh my memory of some of the gods while I was reading the book, Circe, by Madeline Miller. I have read the Odyssey twice and felt the section in this book on the Odyssey covered the major adventures of Odysseus fairly well. This is a nice quick reference book on Greek Mythology.

While this book is a good place to get an idea of the characters in Greek mythology, understand that if you don't know ABSOLUTELY anything about them, then you will be overwhelmed. I knew a couple of the stories and heroics and I was almost annoyed at how many people were there. Plus, Hera got on my nerve, even though it's all myth. :P
But yes, like I said before, it's a good place to start off. :)

A collection of very entertaining tales about Ancient Greece. It’s perfect to read while in Greece because you might be able to check out some of the places mentioned in the book, making the reading even more exciting!
I loved to learn about the Gods with their human characteristics and all the Ancient heroes.

A great collection of Greek mythology, this book covers pretty much all of the Greek myths and gives a good bit of detail with some excellent images.

It was fun to read while I was in Greece and i'm going to read it again when i go back to help refugees! But just reading it... no.

Bought this book in Rhodes in 2012 to read whilst I was out there as I've always been fascinated by Greek Mythology but only knew vaguely about the myths that shape our civilisation nowadays. This is a fantastic read as it's populated with lots of pictures but details with text and passages to explain the gods and history itself. One of the best parts of this is that it offers a family tree of the majority of the Greek Gods titled "The Theogony of Hesiod" after the Cosmonology is established.

Great book to reference with clear and precise research gone into the compiling of the book. Always pick it up when I was a light and quick refresh of my Greek Mythology!

I had a lot of fun reading of the Greek God's and Goddesses. It was a short read. However, it gave you key points of the information. I would defiantly use this book as a reference for a paper. It gives you a head start in your research.

    great read! great for beginners

Technically, I didn't read this. But it's the best I could find for our Greek mythology unit. This counts as one book, as Miss K. said.

  • Yarelis Martínez

Buen contenido, pero tiene varios errores gramaticales.

  • Lavinia

I guess it's as good as it gets out of a souvenirs shop. A very condensed version of the gods, heroes, Trojan war and Odissey - it does give an overly simplified overview of the whole.

I tore through this book in high school! I was completely infatuated with mythology and love the way the stories are portrayed.

Greek Mythology by K. Servi contains the classic Greek myth of Pandora's box. The myth begins with Epimetheus and Prometheus, two brothers that annoy the gods, especially Zeus. As a result, Zeus punished them and kept all humans away from making fire. Prometheus was clever and stole fire from Hephaestus, the blacksmith. Then, Zeus and Hephaestus came up with a wise plan; they made beautiful women out of clay named Pandora and give it to Epithemus as a gift. Epithemus found her so charming, so he married Pandora. Pandora received a box which she was not allowed to open. Hard to resist temptation, Pandora took the key and opened the box expecting golden jewelry and dresses. In the box, there were all the atrocious things given by Zeus. Disease, misery, death, and poverty came out of the box. Epithemus heard her cry and told her that no horror as such is left in the box. They opened it once again and all that remained was a dragon-fly that solved all problems and brought everything back to normal. As one can see, despite the horrors that happened, Epithemus had hope in opening it again and see if there might be a solution.

Pandora’s box relates to the theme of flaws of a man and its consequences from The Odyssey for numerous reasons. First, Pandora’s curiosity made herself in danger like Odysseus with his men. Odysseus’ curiosity made him and his men in danger because he wanted to listen to the Sirens singing; no mortal man could survive listening to their voices. Second, Epithemus and Prometheus’ cowardliness cost them consequences from the gods. The brothers got punished by Zeus for annoying him and took away fire from all humans. Odysseus’ arrival at Ithaca got postponed by Poseidon as a punishment for his boastfulness. Third, Pandora got tricked with the box just like Odysseus got tricked with Circe. Pandora expected jewelry while there was misery in the box; Odysseus stayed five years with Circe and thought that it was five days. Therefore, Pandora’s box is similar to the theme of imperfections of a mortal and its outcome fromThe Odyssey.

In this myth, there were some favorable parts as well as some unfavorable parts. The best part of this book would be when Pandora almost opened the box because it provided suspense to the reader. Pandora hesitated to open the box many times throughout the story which made it unpredictable when she really opened the box. The worst part of the book is when misery hit Pandora because it was sad for the reader to witness such misfortune. Pandora was lucky that Epithemus had some hope; or else she would have been stuck with the misery. This book would be recommended to all amateurs of mythology and High Schoolers. It would also be recommended to parents who have very curious kids because this story would serve them as a lesson. All in all, Pandora’s box is an entertaining myth for all ages to enjoy.
