Complicated Web of Lies and Deceit…and Excellent Heroines and Heroes

    Audiobook Review:
Like all good fantasy stories, this one is a complex web of intrigue. Things appear to start small in a little town in an area ruled by the fire king. But our heroine (and her family) is quickly swept up into something much bigger than she ever imagined she would be a part of. Her 10-year-old sister is abducted by the Snow Queen, whom the heroine later finds out wants to make her young sister her heir. The bulk of the first three-quarters of the book is about how the heroine plans to save her younger sister, starting with a competition. Again, like all good fantasy stories, the heroine gathers allies, and I particularly love Aaron, who is much more than he seems to be on the surface. The lands of ice and fire have been enemies for a long time, and the true basis for that comes to light toward the end of the book, nothing like anyone living has imagined. I listened to the audio version of this book, and I was not wild about the narrator at all. He had an odd voice and occasionally pronounced words wrong. Since the main character is a female, it might have been nice to have this story voiced by a female. But even beyond that, I thought the narrator had a whiny, nasally tone that actually detracted from my enjoyment of the audiobook. Other than that, though, I found this to be a fascinating story, and I wish we knew more about what happened with the heroine, Aaron, Kia, and some other secondary characters we met.

I received a free copy of this audiobook, but that did not affect my review.

Jade takes it upon herself to look after her younger sister, Kia, which destructive-happy king and queen are leading humanity to its doom. There are a lot of pronouns used, it's difficult to know which character is referred to as 'she' and 'her' when there are two or more female characters. It therefore makes it difficult to follow Jade's journey searching for Kia when there are bursts of amnesia. The story has a The Snow Queen and Alice in Wonderland crossover feel with a very family-orientated theme.

Aisha Urooj does it again that I was hoping for in this book. It was a great concept overall in the Fantasy romance series. The characters were what I was hoping for in this world. I was engaged in the world and thought it worked overall. I can't wait to read more from the author.
