I've been on a thief romance kick it seems so I picked up this book. Alaska is a thief for hire but she's also a witch and has abilities that making stealing things fairly easy. She's also known as the Kalla thief cause she leaves calla lilies behind (not sure why a K is used instead of C). Her best friend, Char, is also a witch and she's good with potions. This latest job has her stealing a book that turns out to be a bigger deal than an easy job that gets her paid.
I was able to read this book in a day. It's a little less than 200 pages and I was pretty hooked especially with the slow tension between Alaska and Dimitri who is the owner of the book but also a wolf/witch hybrid. As these story progressed, it seemed to get a bit chaotic. It was the type of fast paced where a lot of things happen but nothing really happens at the same time. I was going to rate this 4 stars cause it prevented me from going into a slump but the more I thought about the story coupled with the reviews I've read for book 2 and I had to deduct a star.
I won't be continuing this particular series but I wouldn't be opposed to trying a different Maya Daniels series in the future. -
“Don’t make the mistake of thinking you can escape me, Miss McCullagh.”
This is a super quick read (115 fast-paced pages) that I really enjoyed. I had it binged in a matter of hours. I love short reads but I’d have liked more of this! Sequel PLEASE.
How’s a red haired witch hanging from a skyscraper for an opening? Alaska wastes no time stealing that damned book, and it wastes no time getting her into a heap of trouble.
I expected something more regarding the stolen artifact, maybe for it to be cursed or something, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see how much damage it can really cause.
Side note: the incantations seem to be in Irish or at least based on it and I’m chuffed that I could understand them before even reading the translation. I guess all those years being forced to learn the language weren’t totally wasted.
The Main Characters
✦ A sexy werewolf / businessman
✦ A fiery witch with a talent for thievery
✦ A loyal sorceress determined to save her best friend“It’s Alaska to you. We are not that close”
There isn’t any romance really (having a fiancé tends to get in the way I suppose) but they have to be mates surely?? All signs point that way.
“Yet.” Char coughed in her fist.

I am fairly new to this author, and I’ve been burning through her backlists to catch up on her other series when I have a chance, but when a new series by her comes out, I have to put that one first. This is a great introductory book about two friends who are a witch and a sorceress who find themselves on the bad side of an Alpha werewolf. This was so darn fun just like a lot of this author’s books. It’s a quick read, fun, and a tease about the whole world. We didn’t learn a whole lot, but I’m hoping in further installments, we will; I’m eager to learn about all their pasts and what the heck poor Char is going to do about…well, just read the book and find out! Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

PNR with an interesting world. Our protagonist is a thief and a witch in a world where witches are hunted while other supernatural species are out in public, generally at peace. I think a lot of readers will enjoy this first book of the series, but it didn't quite hit the mark for me.
For me, there was more description than I needed allowing me to skim pretty big sections without ever feeling lost. There is some chemistry between our MC and the love interest, but it wasn't as strong as I expected. The mystery and the world building seemed to take front-and-center over the romance this far.

OMG nooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!
Wait, I mean: OMG yes!!! A million times yes!
What a great book and what a hell of a great series this one is going to be. We have a little thief that seem to get into big trouble - big trouble the size of an Alpha wolf.
Quick and fast paced read, I couldn't get enough. That ending though is a killer. Our MC is a wonderful character, and I am sure we will learn much more of her as the series progress. This sure made me feel asif everything she goes through, was happening to me. I need more and I need it STAT! -
Did not finish...
Not saying it's bad, I just couldn't get into it.
I read less than 50% so no rating as is my policy. -

Stolen Magic is the first installment in author Maya Daniels Honor Among Thieves series. Alaska McCullough works at the Crystal Palace by day along with her best friend Charmaine Mariatti who claims to be a sorceress. By night, she's known as the White Kalla thief who is all but a ghost. Nobody has yet to catch her trail. She was born a witch, but in this world, that is a dangerous proposition. A group known as Order of Magical Powers, has all but eliminated witches in this world.

Zero stars
Truly, I cannot tell what the author was trying to accomplish in terms of character development, plot, or story. For being “A Snarky Urban Fantasy Romance” the author missed the mark entirely. There are technical problems including, among other things, the misspelling of the flower name “calla lily” as “Kalla” with a capital “K” (ostensibly because the fmc’s surname is McCullough, which does not explain the misspelling, and it would have been funnier if she left a baked Alaska at her crime scenes because her first name is Alaska). At another point, I suspect the author may have been using the abbreviation for “company”, but it might have been the abbreviation for Colorado or something else entirely. Who knows? The world-building of the AU left a lot to be desired.
In terms of character, the fmc is a liar, a thief, and spectacularly stupid. Perhaps when the author described the fmc as “snarky”, they meant incompetent. Apparently having red hair is the totality of her personality and the author references it no fewer than 3x in the first chapter. Despite owning a successful retail store, she is also supposed to be some kind of specialist cat burglar. What is strange is that the author has cobbled together a series of descriptions that don’t convey skill at anything. Alaska barely shows up to her shop. When she does deign to show up, she is hungover, hangs out with her friends, doesn’t keep product stocked, and leaves in the middle of the day for yet more B&E. Although the character is a cat burglar, the author skips right over planning her crimes and simply has the character wing it, relying on magical skills that the author doesn’t both describing. Aside from hair color, the fmc is otherwise more interested in her signature “White Kalla” (evoking imagery of The Wet Bandits from Home Alone), childish rhymes (tick tock goes the clock), and hackneyed catch phrases like “catch me if you can”. It took less than 12 hours for the burglary victim to “catch her”, so it seems they can and quite effortlessly, no less.
After the mmc obliquely informs Alaska that he knows who she is and where she works, the fmc gets the brilliant idea that she will break into his office to destroy the evidence of her previous burglary. Which makes no sense in the slightest. If he were going to turn her into the police, it would have been cops at her store, not some guy delivering a bouquet of calla lillies, also misspelled as Kalla, with a card that says “I know”.
Fully half of the book is dedicated to the fmc doing pointless things solely to put her in the path of the mmc. It was painfully dull and never picks up. -
Alaska is a witch, a powerful one at that~ She owns a shop that sells candles among other things. She also has a side job that earns her quite a bit of money and reputation. Her roommate, and BFF, is a sorceress and very powerful. Alaska’s, or Allie’s, latest job is causing her many problems! Unable to deliver or get a hold of the client, she runs afoul a very powerful Alpha shifter that is owner of a company~ He also has many secrets she will discover~ he has the ability to end her life if so chosen~ he bears a weird tattoo that she questions…many assumptions from both parties will make their relationship a tricky one to discover the answers both parties seek…to help even sort the issues that arise, they will have to eventually trust one another before it is too late…this ends in a cliffhanger! I love the friendship between Allie and Char; it is ride or die no matter what! The intensity of the Alpha in the story makes you feel as if you are the lead looking into his eyes! I am anxious to see how the character development transpires in this series! The author normally does a fantastic job of having the characters mature and change in her series! The author is very talented, for this is another book that blatantly shows how the author writes in different styles and voices~ Another wonderful surprise to her many talents~ this is also one of the many reasons she is a best-selling author~

Decent magical fantasy
I had never heard of this book or author when I got an email recommending it to fans of Kate Daniels. The book was free so I figured I'd give it a shot. The story was a pleasant enough way to pass the time, but never sucked me in. The magic and the close friendship of Alaska and Char are nice. The romance is not really there. It's mostly Alaska (and other women) ogling a hot guy. The proofreading mistakes (such as having the wrong word in a sentence or an extra word) are more frequent than in an average book. It's not awful, but it did bug me. It also made me think that this was a new author, which I can see from the acknowledgements that I was mistaken about. -
Good
Allie is a witch in the broom closet… because while shifters, vampires and mages are perfectly normal and welcome in her world, witches are killed on sight!
Making a living by stealing on order, when a job goes wrong she finds herself face to face with an angry alpha wolf.
And that’s when everything starts to go wrong…
This was a fast paced, and enjoyable story, with a decent amount of action.
The characters were interesting, the snark not too over the top.
The world building was interesting, and I look forward to reading more about it all.
Grammar nazis may have an issue or two with some words in the book, so if it bugs you consider yourself warned!
An enjoyable urban fantasy for fans of the genre. -
Another great read by Maya Daniels. My only complaint about this book was that it ended far too soon! I loved all the various elements of this story. From the character development to the overall story line I love how Daniels built the story up. I feel like this book is just the tip of the ice berg for what we’ll see from Alaska and Dimitri. I can’t wait for the next book to see where the story goes.
This story has an alpha male, a badass heroine, magic, mystery, enemies to lovers, a slow burn that just might kill me, and a definite cliff hanger at the end! -
As with most of this author's books, the main character is basically always the same kind of person. Young woman with a big mouth not really knowing who or what she is. The amount of spelling mistakes was quite astounding not to mention some sentences had words in it that shouldn't be there or simply missing words. I suppose this is what happens when you choose publishing quantity over quality. A good editor is highly recommended. On itself the story was entertaining and I enjoyed reading the book as is, even if it felt familiar from her previous releases.

Omg, this was such a fun read, I couldn't put it down - and I didnt want to! Alaska is strong, loyal and just a tad sassy with a fire burning in her. Char is the cool and collected one who looks at the full picture - she is the calm before the storm that is Alaska! The world building and characters had me hooked from the start and I cant wait to find out what happens next to these two characters, and what lengths they'll go to protect each other -- watch out world, a storms coming!
-
This was a great introduction to a new series. The two friends Alaska and Char are opposites. One cool and calm one sassy and full of fire. This makes for a great team. Add in an Alpha wolf and magical artifacts and you know there will be problems. A fun read and I can't wait to see what happens in the next book!
-
Ooh very good! I like these characters alot. They all feel like they have a lot to bring to the table... not just our main lady Alaska. But Char, Damien and Demitri too. This is gonna prove to be a fantastic, who done it, what's the mystery type of series. I need to know more and can not wait to get deeper into this series. Pick up this book, you will not regret it!
-
Being a redhead and loving stories about witches, what was there not to love with this book? Maya Daniels' superb writing style has you binging this book from cover to cover. This is a seriously good book.
-
Alaska finds herself in over her head when she takes on a job she should not have. Now she has to figure out who to trust, and what cost is too high for her friends to pay to protect her. I can not wait to see what happens next. This book is a wild ride.

Different kind of plot
I really enjoyed this book. I'm severely ADD and found the blurb interesting enough to try it out but didn't think I'd like it as much as I did. I never got bored or took a break -
This is a great read! I really love Alaska and Char. They are two amazing friends, and I love their friendship. Boy, what a cliffhanger! I can't wait to see what happens!

Worth reading but I felt the author was a bit scattered while writing. Thankfully it doesn't take away from the fast paced crazy journey of survival . I love char she is 100% a ride or die friend.
