Professional firefighter Jasmine O’Reilly is stationed to lead the airbase on the Endeavour Ranch for the summer. Having a safe and successful wildfire season could mean a promotion, and after raising herself out of poverty, Jazz has big dreams. She knows better than to put her future in a man’s hands no matter how charming, wealthy, or full of promises he is.
Good-intentioned but overprotective Dan soon realizes he has a type. Meanwhile Jazz, who thought she was long beyond even the slightest brush with the law, finds the sheriff too tempting to resist.
The Montana Sheriff (The Endeavour Ranch of Grand, Montana, #1) Reviews
-
Set largely on the sprawling Endeavour Ranch near the small town of Grand, The Montana Sheriff is the first book in a new series. I love the idea behind the gifting of Endeavour Ranch to three friends on the proviso that they establish a smoke-jumping base and medical clinic there as well as create a program for troubled teens.
In this first book it is up to Custer County Sheriff Dan McKillop to get the smoke jumping vase up and running. Dan is a fabulous character: he has all the swagger you’d expect from a man who’s grown up in ranching country, the sense of responsibility you’d expect from a lawman, sinfully good looks and enough of a sense of humour to make light of them. How could I not swoon?
Jasmine, Jazz, O’Reilly, has been a firefighter and smoke jumper for years. Managing the new base in Grand is something she sees as a stepping stone to a better management position elsewhere. She’s confident, competent and has plenty of sass. She’s also perfect for Dan. There’s lots to love about this book. The setting in Montana’s Ranch country is one I love so I felt at home right away. The characters are all well developed and mostly likeable, though Jazz’s mother is a piece of work. Throw in a fast paced plot, a good chunk of humour and a dash of angst and this book had me hooked. Can’t wait for book two! -
I loved Dan and Jazz and the town of Grand Montana! As always with a Paula Altenburg book, I couldn't put this down and look forward to the next book in the series!

Received an Advance Reader Copy in exchange for a fair review
An easy read with likable characters, “The Montana Sheriff”, by Paula Altenburg (Tule Publishing), features a confident, charming hero and a cool heroine, a woman thriving in a man’s world.
Dan is a decent man, hard-working, with a job and a family he loves, integrated in the community. He’s also easygoing and flirty.
Jazz is an interesting, different heroine, a capable and very fit smokejumper/firefighter transitioning to a management position. I liked what we saw of the smokejumping, firefighting and management and the challenges to a woman operating in a male-dominated field.
Her competency on her job contrasts painfully with her complicated, non loving family, making the reserve and distrust understandable. Despite her aversion to commitment, I liked that Jazz has solid work related relationships.
I felt the story and the romance between Dan and Jazz weren’t developed enough. The parts involving the heroine’s family were so horrible, I just didn’t want to see her mother on page (otherwise I would have loved to have seen the interaction between her and Ryan so that I would understand the reason he says he likes her).
I’m curious about Dan’s friends, Dallas and the enigmatic Ryan. -
I received this arc of The Montana Sheriff from Tule Publishing in exchange for an honest review. This Is the first book in the Grand, Montana series by Paula Altenburg. Book one features Sheriff Dan McKillop. We met Dan in the prior series so it is nice that he has his own story. We learn that he and his 2 friends Dallas and Ryan inherited the Endeavor ranch and airstrip and many assets. Suddenly being very wealthy has been challenging for them and brought people looking for donations from them.
Jazz is a firefighter and was a smoke jumper. Since she is a woman around 30, she had to give up smoke jumping and move into management. Her boss suggests she take a temporary management position in Grand helping them get their new facility up and running while she waits for a job in Idaho to open up. She is not looking for a relationship and thinks Dan has always been wealthy. She has had to work hard and take care of herself so she is not interested in anyone she feels has a silver spoon. She learns that Dan’s reputation is that of a player and she isn’t interested in someone like that. Both of them have baggage. Hers is her family, always looking for money from her and asking her to do something for them: her mother and brother. Dan has an ex that it appeared he was still hung up on. We learn that she is no longer in The picture but Jazz has lots of questions and concerns about her.
Dan hasn't wanted a relationship either but after meeting and spending time with Jazz, he becomes interested in pursuing one. He spends time getting to know Jazz, her staff and what the operation is all about. There is a lot of chemistry between them. Jazz isn’t sure what her future will be or where she will end up since she will be leaving at the end of the summer. There is some suspense as well as angst. It is a wonderful book and I look forward to reading Dallas and Ryans stories. This is another 5 star read by Paula. -
Paula Altenburg’s new series, Grand, Montana begins with Dan McKillop’s story in The Montana Sheriff…Dan made appearances in the McGregor Brothers series also taking place in Grand, Montana. The Montana Sheriff introduces Jazz, a fiery Firefighter/Smokejumper working towards a promotion by establishing a Smokejumper training base of operations at the airbase on the Endeavour Ranch, in which Dan is co-owners with his long time friends Ryan and Dallas…after they’ve inherited a multi-billion dollar estate.
With her trademark wildly appealing and relatable characters, Ms Altenburg’s story immerses the reader in the working of the operations of a Smokejumpers base of operations, as well creates an immediate emotional bond with both Dan’s and Jazz. The dialog moves the story quickly, while the relationship between Dan, Dallas, and Ryan sets the foundation for the bond that’ll drive the series.
I’m definitely looking forward to both Dallas and Ryan’s story…based on his vague background, Ryan’s feels like it just may be grittier than the first two.

The Montana Sheriff by Paula Altenburg.
A dynamite start to a new series.
The Montana Sheriff drew me in from the first page and kept me
intrigued until the last page.
I can't wait to read more books in the Grand, Montana series. -
Excellent book, I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

The Montana Sheriff begins the Grand, Montana series, which is a spin-off from The Montana MacGregor Brothers series with three friends being surprised by a huge inheritance… that comes with strings attached. But for billions of dollars, aside from the fact that these are simply good and caring guys, more land than they can ever use, plus all the buildings, equipment, and livestock already in place (aside from what they need to build to complete those attached strings)… who wouldn’t agree?
We begin with Sheriff Dan McKillop, who is definitely a sexy, handsome man with a bit of, let’s say an attitude toward women he considers adrenaline junkies. There are reasons behind that attitude and he’s going to have to deal with his past before his future can be seen with clearer eyes. Yet, those eyes are focused on Jasmine “Jazz” O’Reilly when she arrives on the ranch in her leathers, short skirts, and vintage motorcycle. She’s the new station manager for his part of the inheritance of building a firefighter/smokejumper station on the ranch… and does Jazz ever have preconceived ideas about men like Dan, rich men like Dan is now. Attitudes that she’s going to have to make a major adjustment to before the promising future she has with this billionaire can ever move forward to a forever kind of love for them both.
We run into familiar faces from The Montana MacGregor Brothers series along the way to finding happy ever afters for these three friends. I found what little we learn of these men’s backgrounds in The Montana Sheriff to be fascinating, and I can’t wait to discover some intriguing secrets they’re keeping under wraps… for now. Also, I’m curious if who they think is their benefactor truly did leave the ranch to them or if there are red herrings scattered about as well. Time will tell on that one.
Jazz and Dan make an intriguing couple. The battles to overcome their attitudes toward each other were epic in many ways. They’re both strong, stubborn, and certain that their way is the only way life can go for them. You’ll find laughter, sizzling chemistry, solid friendships, and a very good story in The Montana Sheriff. I enjoyed myself here and look forward to learning more secrets and watching more stubborn men find their match in Grand, Montana.
I own a Kindle edition of this title. -
This story had me all over the map. There were times that I fully bought into the relationship and chemistry between Jazz and Dan. Then the author would do something abrupt and throw the balance off. By halfway through the book I was no longer feeling the connection these two started off with.
The concept of how Dan and his two best friends came into owning a huge ranch is interesting, yet I felt there could have been more backstory of the trio so we could feel their friendship more than just being told about their friendship. It made some things a bit confusing, especially when it came to a particular character. It was so hard to get a read on him and really just added confusion to the story.
I found the intimate scenes to be awkward. They would start off with a lot of flirting and fire and I had high hopes, but then once the clothes came off the story would lose its way. Very disappointing. I would have rather had those scenes behind closed doors, maybe the story would have kept a better flow that way. Instead of those scenes propelling the story and deepening connections, they fell flat.
Not to pile on, but this is the second book this year I felt really did a poor job of portraying domestic abuse. In this case, the main characters were neither the abusers or the abused. Dan is a sheriff so has to deal with a domestic abuse situation. The language used when he’s speaking and thinking of this married couple made my blood boil, so I strongly suggest you skip this one if abuse is triggering for you. I can’t imagine how the scene would affect a survivor.
All of that being said, I doubt I would pick up the next book in this series. The author just didn’t do a good enough job of grabbing my attention. There was a lot I liked, but too much confusion and plenty that I didn’t enjoy.

All In Good Time. -
The Montana Sheriff is the fourth book set in Grand, Montana. Dan McKillop was featured in the McGregors Brothers series as a friend of Zack McGregor.
Here is Dan's first impression of Jazz, who isn't exactly the type of girl he's decided he wants to introduce to his mother:
The pretty, blue-eyed girl with the short, spiky blond hair and long, jagged bangs looked about as much like a firefighter as Dan did a beautician.
Not only a firefighter, but a smokejumper—one of their elite. And not only a smokejumper, but a highly recommended base manager, meaning she’d been at it a long time. He wanted to ask, “Did they hire you when you were ten?” Because she didn’t look old enough to get into Lou’s Pub, let alone smokejumper training.
But saying so might sound sexist.
She did, however, look like a “Jazz.” The leather pants covered mile-long, muscled legs and the short-sleeved t-shirt revealed tanned, well-toned arms. She was lean, physically fit, yet at the same time, there was a delicate freshness to her face that was decidedly female and very appealing.
And that smooth, husky voice… He could picture her with a mike on a stage in a dark, smoke-filled lounge, crooning to an appreciate crowd of drunken businessmen kicking back at the tail end of a conference.
He could imagine her equally well as a high school basketball star. She had the wholesome look down pat, too. The juxtaposition was intriguing.
What he couldn’t imagine was her managing a crew of smokejumpers. Those guys ate testosterone for breakfast.
But again, saying so might sound sexist. -
This book was decent. I liked that the heroine was independent and in a non typical job. However, I really felt like the romance was really rushed. There seemed to be some timeline inconsistencies as well, like parts got edited out, but the timing of things didn't get adjusted. These two kind of just gave me whiplash, instead of happy falling in love feels. Overall, an ok story. * I received an ARC of this story and this is my voluntary and honest review.

Sheriff Dan McKillop inherit the Endeavor Ranch with two of his buddies. Now that he is rich the women in Grand find him even more attractive. He doesn't do serious. He won't risk his heart. That is until Jazz starts working on the ranch managing the smokejumpers. Jazz won't risk her career by dating her boss. Dan pursues her. Can Dan convince her to take a chance on him? Great read. I'm looking forward to the next book.

I started off finding Dan and Jazz to be very annoying characters but as I continued through I found them relatable and interesting. The dude characters were equally as interesting and I cannot wait to find out more about Ryan and Dallas.
I enjoyed how the story covered a pretty large span of time from the initial meet between characters as it didn’t seem so rushed as in other romance novels. -
A growing love between a sheriff and a smoke jumper has its ups and downs as it progresses. Jazz had a rough upbringing and her family is trouble with a capitol T. Dan has his hands full when it comes to her but he is ready to make their relationship real if she will only agree.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. -
The greatness continues
I've read the other books that relate to this series and loved them. The Endeavour Ranch series is starting out just as wonderful. Can't wait the read the next books in the series. The stories are well plotted and edited. No typos or grammatical errors to make me stumble. I totally recommend books by Paula Altenburg. -
This is an interesting novel because it involves a female firefighter/smoke jumper. Because it's the first book in the series, the author had to introduce several characters who will be in future books which means there is less time for developing the main characters in this book. I enjoyed the chemistry between Dan and Jazz and the respect for each other they maintained.

The Montana Sheriff ( The Endeavour Ranch of Grand, Montana Book 1)
I really enjoyed this book. It's a sweet story about the two main characters Dan and Jazz finally admitting their love for each other, although Dan has known pretty much from the start. Can't wait to read the next installment of this series.🤗 -
Hot Sheriff Romance
Excellent storyline, loved the byplay of all the characters. A lot of sage wisdom written in, along with humor and heat. Jazz and Dan's journey was no walk in the park, but ended with a happy sigh HEA for me. -
Two and a half stars, it didn't really grab me, but I do like female characters portrayed as being good at a job that is tradionally male dominated.
Also liked that it was Jazz who was relationship shy not Dan, the reverse is more often true in books. -
A short and sweet romance story. It is a very quick read too.

Really enjoyed this first book in author Paula Altenburg’s new series. I enjoy her style of writing & storytelling. It was funny, sweet, sexy & full of just the right amount of angst. Dan & Jazz have a great chemistry & their relationship was sweet & very sexy. A sheriff & a smokejumper/firefighter make a really fantastic pairing. Because Dan is a sheriff, Jazz doesn’t think that their relationship will do him any good because her background & family aren’t the greatest as Dan soon finds out. I loved how Dan fell fast for Jazz & did everything in his power to prove to her that she was who & what he needed & wanted. I also loved how Jazz cared for Dan even if she didn’t want to see it. The challenges were great in both job & relationship & I’m glad love won out. Thank you to Tule publishing for letting me read this book for an honest review.
