I liked this book so well I ended up writing an English translation. It is so apropos for today. A blue hippo goes on an odyssey seeking friends, but seems to always be lacking something to be a member of every group she approaches. Instead of looking for what they have in common, each group turns her away because of some perceived fault. And each time, although hopeful and trying to keep heart, she loses a little more self-respect, until she finally feels she has nothing left to offer. When she falls into despair, a little fish seeks her friendship. She has no self esteem left at this point, and meets each friendly entreaty with why she isn't worthy. The fish offers one last hope: think about what we have in common, and see if we can't start from there. The disheartened hippo rallies, and accepts the fish's friendship. A great story for today's kids to help cancel out the negativity of the polarity they see in the media, where each group can only see its side of things, and immediately casts aside anything different. This is truly a story espousing diversity, and, more importantly, a call to all of us to look for things we have in common with those around us, to build relationships on them. Beautifully illustrated.
