I never imagined falling in love with someone...!!! Shiro is an introverted girl who has lived a quiet life by always keeping to herself. One day, Shiro finds herself in a serious relationship with Takasago, the most popular guy in her class, when he asks her out as a batsu-game. Although Shiro was scared of him at first, she began to notice what a kind person Takasago was as they spent more time together and realized she was actually in love with him...! The second volume of the roller-coaster ride of a romantic comedy between an introverted girl and a brash dreamboat is here!

The Literature Club (formerly the Shiro Club) now has three members and an official purpose, if they ever get around to it. Takasago is still happily playing the part of the devoted boyfriend, but between the interference of Yachiyo, the class rep, and Shiro’s attempts to overcome her anxiety, Takasago might find that he’s the one who ends up needing help in the end.

If the yardstick for any book is how interested you would be in the characters even if they weren’t doing anything, this series pretty much clears that bar and then some. There is something magical about this series that I cannot put my finger on, but it really nails what I want from a good shojo book.

Okay, part of that is the plot, which is doing things I’ve never seen before and that freshness is amazing to experience. It’s probably why a standard setting like this is brought to life - the characters feel far more real because they don’t just keep neatly falling into the patterns we expect. We clearly have a rival in Yachiyo... or do we..? There’s nothing explicit here and I genuinely don’t have a clue what his angle is.

I have rarely read a manga where I found the dialogue so enjoyable and the chemistry between the leads so palpable. There’s a real craft to the way they’re written. Very little is said by Takasago towards the end, but you can tell that his circumstances (particularly after one text message) are clearly weighing on him. It’s all so expressive.

Then, well, watching Shiro come out of her shell and push herself just a little bit more than she did before and start making friends is inspiring stuff. I’m genuinely hoping she doesn’t get stabbed in the back by one of them; the book smartly dances out of a hopelessly cliche situation quite quickly (for now) and we already have a designated mean girl so I think we’re safe… Then Shiro makes a truly bold move for herself. And it’s kind of shocking.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before in a shojo (certainly not quite like that) and I was so taken aback, but not in a bad way. I will never speak ill of a book that can pleasantly surprise me and it remains to be seen exactly how much trouble this might cause in the future. There’s certainly something to be said for the ‘fix yourself’ attitude and I like the way that rather than fixing her, Takasago has become somebody that inspires Shiro to take matters into her own hands.

Another big point in its favour is that this book’s actually casually very funny. It never feels like it’s trying too hard for a laugh, but our esteemed mangaka is an old hand at this and her mastery of the sly aside or random panel gag is as spot on as her drawing style. I’ve never been invested in laundry so much before (although I will admit that the symbolism there is way too heavy-handed).

I mean, okay, you might not love this if you’re looking for something that isn’t a school romance, but why were you reading this book anyway? It’s definitely of its genre, but right now my feeling is that if it continues like this it’s going to transcend the endless churn of genre standards and might become truly memorable.

It could certainly end up that all this is prelude to just hitting the usual story beats (I don’t think the destination is in doubt, just the path we’re taking to get there), but for now I am very, very happy on this ride.

Look, I think this is probably a four star book, but I’m throwing my caution to the wind because, boy, do I ever love these characters. It really feels like this series is finally the perfect distillation of everything that Nikki Asada does well and has, so far, made no missteps. I was tempted to read this straight through a second time immediately after I finished (which was my response to the first volume as well) and that’s a good sign that I’m seriously invested.

"It's like getting all the hair out of my face helped my world open up. My mind feels clearer and it sort of gives me butterflies."

This was surprisingly a refreshing shoujo manga that went a different route than I expected!

    SPOILERS AHEAD

    SPOILERS OVER

Sort of unrelated, but I really like the writing parts of this story! While I haven't written any fiction in a long time, it was cool to see Suehrio be given tips by who I *think* could be the author of her favorite book.

Overall, I really enjoyed this volume! It went a different route than I expected and/or have seen in shoujo recently and offered a new kind of story that I'm very curious about! Hoping for good things for our heroine in the upcoming volume!

So flippin' cute!! I do love that some bits are realistic and others are called out. Suehiro goes along with things, but does take the time to think and backtrack if she needs to. Super wholesome and lovely.

This manga really has a lot of potential to be one of the greats and I'm really just enjoying myself for the ride. I can't wait for the next volume!

The Springtime of My Life is easily becoming one of my new favorite manga series and only 2 volumes in! I think this probably the third book that I've read where I've had the best luck with enjoying the popular x shy trope, its truly done so well here...Suehiro and Takasago on those last few pages, so cute ⊹˚. ♥♥ Will be continuing this series!

So carrying on from Vol. 1 Suehiro is a shy bookworm and after becoming a "real" couple with Takasago, she realizes she's starting to fall in love with him. They become the sole members of the literary club, but class rep Yachiyo decides to join at the last minute! In this volume Suehiro is starting to come to terms with her feelings over Takasago and becomes worried that as she falls in love with him each day, she won't have the courage to share how she actually feels. From the hairties to the small moments they have together, Suehiro lies and says she's working on her writing in order to distract herself from Takasago.

Then a spring break club trip gives her a new perspective on their relationship .

WHat I loved about this series that genuinely surprised me is how Suehiro, despite her introverted and quiet nature, (especially after that previous chapter) she genuinely wanted to open up new doors and friendships with those around her. It was so inspiring to read & I loved that development from HER!! Because of Takasago, she sees how it motivated her to want to reach out to other classmates and make new friends...love to see it (ಥ﹏ಥ) <3

Okay those final pages tho?? Takasago obviously likes her too so that final scene sttop that was adorable?? I'm so glad this is a longer shojo series bc I'm so interested to see how their friendship/relationship develops even more 💗

My only gripe with this volume is that there was just a lot of focus on the relationship & Suehiro being nervous about the whole situation not *too many scenes of her & Takasago just hanging out were present and some plot threads introduced in Vol. 1 weren't delved into more (only very briefly)...overall it was also a slower-paced volume which I don't mind but...just wanted a bit more to the plot for this one. Very interested to see what happens in the next volume tho

The Springtime Of My Life continues to be such a wonderful surprise read in terms of romance stories & shojo manga, where I'm loving the characters so much! Suehiro is a great main character, especially as we see her journey to overcome her introverted nature and try to be more open to new experiences which is such a lovely addition to the story. The romance is truly the sweetest, has a lot of layers to it & I'm interested to see where it's headed in Volume 3!

Do I like the fact that Takasago asked Shiro out because of a Batsugame? (well, at least that's what we all assume, he could have had real feelings and used the Batsugame as an excuse. We're only 2 volumes in, time will tell) No.

I do, however, like the communication he tries to create with her. Shiro's having doubts and second thoughts, and is avoiding talking to him about anything. This is what he tells her at the playground where she's hiding out.

"Let's Talk about this...properly. What you're thinking... what you're so worried about...what you want me to do... I'll listen to all of it... I don't want you making that face all by yourself."

That's quality communication and wanting to understand right there. Better than a lot of adults.

    Just very effective shojo.

Still standard shoujo romance stuff goin' on, but I still had fun. I love the art and the use of stars in paneling and decoration. Also love the character designs.
