Oh snap, do we have a noir here in comics that has nothing to do with the supernatural or occult???? Not that there is anything wrong with those, but its just nice to sometimes have a story in the real world. (only issue 1 so that stuff still might show up)
Art suits the tone and style of the writing and its nice to have a story set in retro San Fran .
Also this might be a title to have in physical form vs digital. The color tones for every two pages make this book look so cool. Or if digital is your only choice, go for the two page view
Aside from the look and art, story ain't so bad either -

All of the racial slurs thrown around made this uncomfortable to read, for good reason. But I also found this a bit difficult to follow at times, and some of the language is quite dated (though appropriate for the time) so I was a little confused about who/what was being talked about before looking things up. Glancing at the next issue there's a cast of characters and some summaries in the front that I think will solve those problems for any future issues so I'm not holding my confusion against this series. -
I'm digging what the creators are calling their "Chinatown noir" style, and excited to see a comic tackle some of the history behind early Asian migration to the US.
Be warned, there is heavy use of racial slurs by several characters. -
This hard-boiled and violent noir set in 1936 provided me with a lot of food for thought About institutional racism as it relates to Asian immigrants and Asian Americans. The back of the comic provides some background on laws to restrict immigration by different groups, what prompted the laws and what the fallout was. Timely comic given what’s going on today. Not sure where the series is going with main character but totes hooked on the artwork!

Noir from the viewpoint of a Chinese detective. Edison Hark is absolutely not excluded from his share of flagrant racism trying find out what happened to a missing young woman. The start of the story is promising. The standout to me is the fantastic narrative storytelling and artwork by Alexandre Tefengki. Looking forward to the next volume.

The setting of this graphic novel was super intriguing to me. But for some reason, I found it difficult to follow the plot. But if you pick up the book, definitely check out the immigration timeline section in the back. Super fascinating chronology of anti-Asian laws in the US.

Great storytelling, though a little confusing in switching to flashback stories at times. It was very interesting to learn about yet another piece of american history that has been ignored for too long: the plight of the Chinese immigrant. I look forward to the next installment!

Цікавий нуарний детектив. Прикольний стиль малюнку. Хороший колоринг. Особливо прикольно підкреслюються деталі які помічає детектив, а також думки детектива. Ностальгія як у старих нуарних фільмах.

I really wanted to like this because I like the genre, and I'm happy to have a "Good Asian" hero, but I was knocked out with so much exposition and detail right away that I had a hard time recovering enough to get into the characters and story. It was pretty good...
Update: I've read #2 and #3. I wish they'd keep the exposition to the facts at the back of the issue, where I'm happy to read historical bullet points. As a detective noir fan, I'm still having a hard time finding some reason to keep reading. -
The Good Asian #1 is a comic I picked because of the reviews I read about it. Nothing else. This is my first time reading the work of Pornsak Pichetshote, and this would be my first time enjoying the art of Alexandre Tefenkgi as well.

Is 1936 in San Francisco during the United States ban of Chinese immigrants, and the author uses this part of American history to help develop the narrative. Here the story introduces us to Edison Hark, an incredibly skilled Chinese detective after a dangerous killer.
Since everything happens during the Chinese Exclusion Act, we will encounter uncomfortable and unpleasant situations involving discrimination, racism, and violence.
I gave this first issue an 8/10 because I felt that it was the classic noir detective story even when I enjoyed it very much. But don’t take me wrong, it is classic but excellent and engaging. I’m definitely buying the next issue!
