A Love Story inspects the bleakest corners of the heart, unwinding our concept of identity and being through a strange, unknown universe that we often grapple to understand and make sense of. These poems are a symphony within an unopened box. Do we choose to open it and find what's inside? Are we brave enough to go deeper to find what we ourselves contain?

A Love Story Reviews

  • Adrian Cepeda

Joanna C. Valente's A Love Story is a Wild at Heart romance that would make David Lynch proud. Each poem aims and shoots through your heart. You will not be able to resist every carnal romantic lyrical rendezvous as you will lust for Valente's Naturally Exotic Born Killer poems. Hunter S. Thompson must have been describing A Love Story when he once said, “Buy the ticket, take the ride.” A Love Story is so lasciviously addictive you will die for every one of Joanna C. Valente's amorous rhymes.

  • Matt Feltman

Wow. If you've watched TWIN PEAKS, you'll understand that Valente adds another layer to their already rich poems. If not, I'll just say that Valente's "I AM THE QUEER YOU HATE", a poem near the end of this collection, hit me hard.

  • Christina Rosso

This collection is haunting, heartfelt, and honest, exploring queerness, identity, and violence often faced by femme-bodied folk. A must-read.

  • Eleanore

    "Do you think atonement exists
    for monsters

    like us?"

I'll be frank: most contemporary poetry just *really* does not work for me these days, but this collection did, and I'm glad for it. Its inspirational source material asks a lot of hard questions, and so does this.
