A Love Story Reviews
-
Joanna C. Valente's A Love Story is a Wild at Heart romance that would make David Lynch proud. Each poem aims and shoots through your heart. You will not be able to resist every carnal romantic lyrical rendezvous as you will lust for Valente's Naturally Exotic Born Killer poems. Hunter S. Thompson must have been describing A Love Story when he once said, “Buy the ticket, take the ride.” A Love Story is so lasciviously addictive you will die for every one of Joanna C. Valente's amorous rhymes.

Wow. If you've watched TWIN PEAKS, you'll understand that Valente adds another layer to their already rich poems. If not, I'll just say that Valente's "I AM THE QUEER YOU HATE", a poem near the end of this collection, hit me hard.

This collection is haunting, heartfelt, and honest, exploring queerness, identity, and violence often faced by femme-bodied folk. A must-read.

"Do you think atonement exists
for monsters
like us?"
I'll be frank: most contemporary poetry just *really* does not work for me these days, but this collection did, and I'm glad for it. Its inspirational source material asks a lot of hard questions, and so does this.
