Celebrate the fun that grandparents and grandkids can get up to in this action-packed undersea adventure--a companion picture book to Paul McCartney's #1 New York Times bestseller Hey Grandude.

Grandude's inventions are the stuff of legend, and his new green submarine doesn't disappoint. In fact, it flies as well as submerges! Grandude whisks the grandkids off on another adventure, but he and the Chillers soon find themselves in a pickle. Suddenly, it's Nandude to the rescue! Nandude is an explorer as courageous as Grandude, with an amazing accordion-ship to boot! Between Grandude's magic compass and Nandude's magical music, everyone arrives home safely. But not before enjoying a parade, dancing rainforest animals, and a narrow escape from a grabby octopus. This tale is perfect for little explorers and Paul McCartney fans alike! Artist Kathryn Durst returns with glorious, humor-filled illustrations that are as beautiful as ever.

Grandudes Green Submarine Reviews

  • Lake Shore Library

Some of the plot points come out of nowhere--a storm is chasing them? Since when? Nandude has a song? Where did it say that before? Why has Nandude abandoned her family? I know it's a kid's book, but it could have be a bit more cohesive.

Hei Paul, vaikka sattuisit olemaan yksi kaikkien aikojen lahjakkaimmista lauluntekijöistä, niin tiedäthän että kuvakirjan tekeminen on siitä huolimatta ihan oma taiteenlajinsa. Kathryn Durstin kuvitukseen tarina keltaisesta vihreästä sukellusveneestä ei kaadu.

I love the art style in the Grandude books, and the stories are cute and fun.

Scott was with me when I "attempted" to read this book. He looked at me and said "This is terrible. And stupid."

    He's right.

It's too wordy. It does NOT tie into the Beatle's hit "Yellow Submarine." It's blech.

I gave up. And Audrey didn't care. She was asleep.

Sinterklaas bracht dit nieuw boek voor de kindjes en ik ben er even verzot van. Leuke aanvullen op het eerste boek van yopa.

I love the music of the Beatles, and Paul McCartney is clearly a genius when it comes to writing songs. But I'm not particularly enamored with this particular picture book featuring the four grandchildren--he calls them "chillers"--and their grandfather or grandude. Still, the other book, Hey, Grandude!--was a New York Times best seller so what do I know? While the kiddies are cooling off in Grandude's invention shed, they spot a photograph of Nandude, their grandmother, and end up boarding a green submarine to search for her. It flies through the air and moves through the ocean as the children and Grandude visit various places and try to get a lead on Nandude's whereabouts. They face much peril from storms and even an octopus, but Nandude arrives to save the day. How she knows where they are or how they plan to find her isn't clear, but eventually, everyone heads back home where Nandude regales them with stories of what she's been doing. It isn't clear where the chillers' parents are, but clearly, these youngsters are loved. The somewhat self-deprecating humor and the color-drenched images of what look to be two aging hippies and their brood and their travels will charm many young readers who won't have a clue about the author's first career. But for me, the story went on a bit too long.

Featured in a grandma reads session.

Can't resist a book by a Beatle, right? He treated me and mine to a sub trip as a granddude, with his grandkids and their grandnan coursing their way through the world. Make me chuckle, because basically it is about Granddude not having enough excitement (other than the Green Sub) for the kids to "do" and so they needed to find Grandnan, because bottomline, she's the one with the magic.

Granddads are like that! "Let's find Grandmom and see what's SHE's doin'. . . ." Ha! so true. . .so he gathers all up and they find Grandnan in a whimsical spot on the planet doing her usual, and gathers them all up as if she'd been expecting them. So like life.

We loved the book, I loved the moment to tie a my life experiences loving the Beatles in with grandkids. . .

Grandude and the Chillers are going on an adventure to find Nandude. They travel through many fantastic settings, following a unique tune that's sure to get them there ... eventually.

This book is cute and silly. I felt like I was being excluded from an inside joke for part of it. Maybe there's another in the series that would illuminate? The conflict didn't pull me in--everyone was pretty cheerful the whole time. The concept is really fun though, and I loved the creativity.

I loved the artwork and story. I haven’t read the first one - so maybe this is addressed in the first one - but.. why isn’t it a yellow submarine. I just .. wanted it to be a yellow submarine so badly. But an action packed, quirky, adventure with a GREEN submarine that can fly and can submerge under water and a fun cast of characters, including some underwater friends!

Really cute book. I so loved the pretty and colorful illustrations. There were some fun language devices thrown in every now and then, so it was nice and fun that they weren’t overbearing or distracting to the book. Have to watch carefully for them. While it was sweet, though, not much super special about that.

Ugggg! Way too many things to list that bothered me about this book. It only reinforced my opinion about children's books authored by celebrities. I will say that I like the moniker of "Grandude!!!" But, I wish "Nandude" would have been more appropriately named, "Gramdude!"

I'm hoping Seth Meyers' new book will prove me wrong.

Read both Grandude's Green Submarine and Hey, Grandude!, the (so far) two-book series Paul McCartney wrote.

I think they would be good for very young children, perhaps in the 3-6 age group. These were fun, very quick reads, and would work even for kids with very short attention spans.

  • Claire

This one is definitely better than the previous book. It sounds terrible but this one feels a bit Beatley... I know Paul is more than the Beatles but a green submarine and a octopus... I really liked this one.

  • Anthony

Grandude and the Chillers take off in Grandude's latest invention in search of Nandude who has been gone quite a long time. Grandude's Green Submarine takes them all into a land of wonder as the search for the whereabouts of Nandude.

  • Sandy

Fun illustrations and a cute picture book. My child was a bit confused at times (the storm chasing them with no explanation, why does Nan abandon her husband and family, etc.), but overall an enjoyable read.

While I'm not the biggest fan of celebrity authors, fans of Paul McCartney will like this sequel to his Hey Grandude bestseller. This time Grandude and the chillers take off on a green submarine to find Nandude. The story shows an interesting journey encountering many creatures along the way.

I think I liked the first one more, but it was nice anyway. And the drawings are great.

My grandkids and I (a retired Navy submariner) really loved this delightful story! Paul's creativity continues, from the Beatles' Yellow Submarine to this Green Submarine.
