It’s Launch day for the third novel in Essex Author, Ian Hornett’s successful Quarton trilogy.
Quarton: The Payback
Reluctant heroine and Garalian, Fen, returns to her native planet in her quest to control the Coding. A virus like energy force that can be deployed for good or evil, the coding feeds off those who seek to harness its power. But to what end? Is it servant or master? And should it be destroyed?
Fen is weary, but destined to fight across time and space to outwit arch enemies Arrix and Klavon, temporarily in alliance, in the same borrowed earthling body.
Time is running out. She alone can prevent Arrix and Klavon from achieving their plans to dominate the galaxy for all time.
Across lush worlds where disturbing memories blossom amongst the flora, and the fauna is predatory, Fen plays a living game of win or die. She battles more than the natural world, she must also prevail despite the crass ambition of politicians who do not understand the stakes, and her adversaries’ ruthless hunger for power.
If she is ever to be reunited with her daughter, Fen must return to earth and defeat her enemies. Can she make it back in time and alive? -
An satisfying end to an enjoyable trilogy. Not my usual crime genre, but I liked trying to figure out the reincarnations. The glossary was a welcome aid for this; helping to remember characters throughout the 3 books. I enjoyed seeing the story developed from different narrator’s eyes and thought all the threads spun through the course of the trilogy joined coherently to complete the story.

Another excellent sci-fi read!
Hornett goes from strength-to-strength in the final instalment of this trilogy. I've been buying his books since the beginning, and I've always found his stories to be well-written, with original description and captivating characters. This entry was no different. A brilliant finale, and I can't wait to read Hornett's next series! -
It's the final book in the series and I was intrigued how it was going to end. It was great that it explained events in the previous two books and I loved seeing the bond between Fen and Martha.
Definitely not a book just for young adults. There was one scene in particular that reminded me of Hunger Games, one of my ultimate favourites. -
This is the final book in the excellent Quarton Trilogy and what a stunning conclusion it is. Stranded on their deserted home world, Fen and Pella must work together to discover a way to collect enough energy to return to Earth. Knowing that is where the final battle will take place and both desperate to save loved ones they left behind; old grievances and resentments must be put aside in the face of the greater goal. Meanwhile, the situation is rapidly deteriorating on Earth, and the forces for good face seemingly insurmountable odds.
This trilogy is a sweeping and epic read with an intelligent and intriguing premise and relatable characters. Showing us a world brought to its knees by the greed and stupidity of man, we struggle with the survivors to forge a new civilisation. But sometimes it seems humankind has learnt nothing as old political intrigues, greed, and prejudice raise their ugly heads again. Add to this mix four aliens who should not be here and are intent on fighting their own battles. With only one of them caring enough about mankind to worry about collateral damage our future looks bleak.
Payback, book three, shows that maybe all is not lost though. Perhaps minds can be persuaded to change, and that blood is sometimes thicker than water — no matter what crimes have been committed — and family should and will, stick together.
For fans of clever dystopian fiction, this series is a must-read. -
This is the third and final book in the Quarton Trilogy, a Sci-Fi thriller with an intriguing premise, fabulously well-rounded characters and excellent world-building. Spanning millenia of time and light-years of distance, the third book follows the four main characters in their final reincarnations as they struggle to fulfil fates linked to the mysterious coding of the quartons. It’s a fast-paced read with a clever satisfying conclusion that made me think long after I’d finished the book – always a sign of great writing. If you like intelligent science fiction you’ll love this series. Highly recommended.

The Quarton series comes to an adventure-filled conclusion with The Payback. I’ve enjoyed reading this reincarnation journey through space and time. In particular I liked how the multiple plotlines and character arcs entwined and developed through the books.

Well done!
Hornett takes us on a nail biting back and forth between characters and worlds in Quarton: The Payback, the eventful conclusion to the Quarton Trilogy. This is one of those rare series where each book was better than the one before it, and the first was pretty darn amazing. I’ve loved (and loved to hate) his characters and the scope of imaginative content involved in these books is impressive to say the least. If you enjoy sci-fi dystopian fantasy, intrigue, ruthless villainy, and indefatigable heroes, you can’t go wrong with this trilogy. Buckle up and enjoy!
