I need this book. Like the perfect little sunshine I can use everyday. I would keep it inside my bag. Put it beside my pillow. And put it on my work table.
Because it would be so worth it.
You never know how these simple tips work when you do not expect it.
I have experienced it and I am all set to experience the same again through this book.
It's bright and beautiful but talks about pulling you up when you are at the bottom.
The illustrations are just perfect.
Yes, I need this book soon.
Thank you, author/artist and the publisher, for the advance reader copy. -
This book is marketed as a gift for new grads or fans of the illustrator's art. I'd agree with that, as it's a book that I'm not sure I'd keep if it were given to me but others might love it. Colorful illustrations take up about 2/3 of the pages and the other pages have life advice like BREATHE and then a paragraph about why breathing properly is important. Other tips are things like get rid of frenemies, don't mind making mistakes, and get outside. Each one has one to three paragraphs expanding on why it's so important. If I owned this book, the way I'd probably use it is to just open up to a random page each day and try to follow that advice.
I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review. -
This is a short and beautifully illustrated book. One thing about Chronicle Books is that they tend to be visually lush, and this book certainly is.
I’m currently on a sabbatical, and this book hit the sweet spot for me. Even though it seems to be geared toward young adults who identify as female, this would be a nice gift for mature middle and high school students. I would have loved to have had this book when I was in college. Even though I’m far beyond those years, I found the writings in this book to be nice reminders of things I’ve learned through the decades. It’s filled with compassion and encouragement, I would recommend this book to anyone who’s seeking some soulful support.
The illustrations complement the text, making it cheerful and uplifting. I want to give a shout-out to the illustrator, Bodil Jane. I was unfamiliar with the artist, but I’m definitely interested in seeing more of her work.
What’s nice about this book is that each wisdom chapter could be used as a journaling prompt. It’s an easy read and compact, but it’s also a book that you could keep by your bedside or on your desk, making it easy to reach when you need a reminder of how you want to live your life.
While there are so many things in this book I love, here’s a short book excerpt:
“ACCEPT DISAPPOINTMENT: Things will go wrong. Things will break. Feel all the feelings, but don’t let broken things break your spirit.”
One of my takeaways is that this is like a grownup version of “Oh, the Places You’ll Go.” I can see myself coming back to this book.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Chronicle Books for allowing me to review an Advance Reader’s Copy of this lovely and inspiring book. -
These illustrations are STUNNING! They are colorful, lyrical, playful and inspiring. This would make an excellent gift book, especially for young women (I'd say middle school - college). It's a perfect graduation, Christmas, or birthday present.
The book does not have a narrative structure or any particular organization I could recognize. It was several dozen snippets of good advice--nothing most people haven't heard before, but well-expressed--accompanied by gorgeous visuals. We can always use reminders of helpful concepts to live by and this is a very positive, uplifting book!
Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review! -
“Realizing your full potential, and leaning in to who you are meant to be, can take some work. It may mean you’ll need to do a deep dive into yourself, exploring what you can change or work on in order to move forward. It’s not a weakness to admit you’re struggling. And there’s no shame in asking for help, whether from a loved one or a professional. Acknowledging all of yourself, even the messy parts, is a big step — but the better you know yourself, the better you’ll understand how to live in a way that is true to yourself.”
‘Thriving’ is a vibrant, stylishly illustrated and positive little hardcover book filled with encouragement and suggestions to live a healthy, well-balanced, and meaningful life. It is an artful and loving reminder that it is okay to put yourself first.
Here is an empowering collaboration between Carey Jones, an editor and writer from Denver, Colorado, and Bodil Jane, an Amsterdam based illustrator who makes detailed, colourful pieces centred on women’s daily lives and achievements.
Jones offers thoughtful tips for navigating the inevitable pressures of your daily grind. From advice to strategies that will completely change your mindset, her uplifting words will help you to cultivate a more compassionate, empathetic and fulfilling life.
‘Thriving’ is a lovely gift or keepsake for a friend who is caught up in life’s challenges. It is also an inspiring, thoughtful gift for a young woman, who would, I think, enjoy the funky illustrations, which constitute about two-thirds of the book, together with the counsel to prioritize their mental health and physical well-being.
The author offers up wisdom and insights for living your best life. Whether you’re starting a new chapter of your own story or simply searching for ways to live with more intention, curiosity and joy, this book will inspire connection with yourself and prepare you for the many adventures life has in store.
A huge thank you to @NetGalley and @ChronicleBooks for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. -
This is a short well illustrated book, perfect for a coffee table. Although I went through it in a couple of sittings and it is not a bad idea to do that, yet this book would be perfect as an early morning motivator. Just read a couple of pages, take a look at a few illustrations and you have something to think about the entire day.
I loved the illustrations, the messages are short but give you something to think about. Overall, recommended.
I received a free copy from NetGalley. The opinions expressed are my own. -
Lovely illustrations and that's the main thing I liked about this book. Some good advice, too, like go outside and get fresh, practice and you'll get better, and embrace imperfection. I think this would be great in paper copy because you can flip open to a random page and see the illustrations or advice. Some of the advice may be obvious, but we aren't always doing the obvious things each day, so it's a good reminder to take care of yourself.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for a free eARC in exchange for an honest review. -
Colorfully illustrated little book of inspiration. Could easily be used for daily affirmations just by opening it up randomly each day and absorbing the nuggets. It's not as if these little bits of advice are all brand new, but they are presented in an uplifting manner with a focus on self-care.
I received an electronic copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. -
A quick and easy read with plenty of wonderful steps that are not only easy, but also are very relatable. I borrowed this from a library, but may have to consider owning it because the illustrations and words will be helpful again 💕
