Booze Over Broadway: 50 Cocktails for Theatre Lovers Reviews
-
A fun cocktail recipe book with facts and stats about many a beloved musical. It also has several mocktail recipes. My one question is if there are other options one can use for the sheer number of cocktails that use lemon in them. The book contains suggestions for vegan cocktails and substitutes for grapefruit but not lemon. Blasted lemon allergy...
-
A fun read! Each mentioned has a cute themed cocktail/mocktail to accompany the musical. Each has it's own factoids of opening dates, fun facts, writer/musical arrangements, etc. There are plenty of larger productions that weren't mentioned, however it'll give you inspiration to make your concoction for other productions.
Recipes by an "up and coming" bartender on the big city scene is the author behind them. Most ingredients would not be stocked in a common cabinet, o.k. at least not mine. In the "opening credits", the author gives a good tutorial on barware, alcohol options, etc.
Black/white/red drawings and caricatures accompany each feature.
So whether you're going to the show or watching at home, wet your whistle with a themed cocktail/mocktail to enjoy when the curtain opens. -
*I was given a free ARC from NetGalley*
I am the world’s biggest musical theatre fan. It all started when I saw Annie in Boston when I was six. We had the worst seats. We used those mini binoculars to see the stage better. But I was hooked. Right then and there. In high school, I started to audition for shows myself. It was such a thrill. I continued seeing shows in Boston and one day had an opportunity to see my first Broadway show, American Idiot.
Sadly, that musical is not included in this book, but I figured it deserved to be mentioned. I am now a 27 year old who takes every opportunity she can get to go to NYC and see more shows. Mix that love with some amazing cocktails, and you have this book.
The pictures along with each show themed cocktail were incredible. The names were even more incredible. I wish I had the talent to make fancy cocktails to try them out. You could tell they were given a lot of thought into each drink. This book would be the perfect coffee table book for your home. Something that shows off your passions while also caters to a wider crowd. I would recommend this as a gift to anyone who loves Broadway as much as I do. -
I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
This book would make a great gift for any Broadway fan! It gives a short, yet interesting background on each show included, and also offers easy-to-understand cocktail recipes. I also adored the cheeky names given to the drinks, as well as the delightful original artwork.
My only issue is that there were some BIG shows that were left out. I can't believe there wasn't anything for Phantom of the Opera! Jersey Boys, Book of Mormon, Aida, Waitress, Dear Evan Hansen, Dreamgirls.... I just felt like I would have rather have had more shows included than having some shows have two drinks. That being said, I enjoyed reading this and think it will be one I purchase once it is released. -
Booze Over Broadway by Michael Goff is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in late December.
Fifty very punny Broadway-inspired cocktail recipes that range from strong & boozy to sour & fruity to wild & out of the box. The descriptions & instructions are very easy to follow, even fun, and have tips to make the drink more dramatic or to serve multiple people. Plus, there’s cute black, white, and red illustrations that are thematic to the theatre shows. -
Broadway musicals and alcohol - where could one go wrong? Michael Goff didn't with his book Booze Over Broadway. The book on its own is fun to look at with puny recipe names to go to the show they are matched. You get a quick snapshot at the musical with fun and artsy drawings. I appreciated seeing the recipes for grenadine and even making a Bloody Mary from scratch.
How did I find this book? I won it in a Goodreads giveaway. -
What do you serve when Lin-Manual Miranda drops by? A Brandy Alexander Hamilton! Never have I had so much fun reading! Booze over Broadway is a pure delight…and informative as well.
The book is organized into three sections. The first, Overture, deals with glass and barware, techniques, spirits (Amaro to Wine) and garnishes. There are more types of glasses than I thought existed but each will appear in the individual cocktail recipes as part of the guide. New information (for me): the three lines at the bottom of everyone’s favorite red Solo cup are for measuring 1, 5 and 12 ounces.
The section part is Musical Numbers. 50 uniquely named cocktails from 44 Broadway musicals. There are fun facts about each musical - premiere dates, stars, composers and quick synopsis - but in this book, the drinks are the stars. My favorites include:
Life is a Cabernet
Fly High BirdieI
I Don’t Know How to Love Gin
Annie Get your Gin
Everything’s Coming up Rosé
One Drink More
The final section, Close Curtain, gives metric and other equivalent measures.
Illustrated with gorgeous caricatures, Booze over Broadway is a perfect gift for any fan of Broadway musicals or for anyone who wants to take their cocktail repertoire up a notch. You’ll read, you’ll laugh, you’ll buy! 5 stars!
Thank you to NetGalley, Tiller Press and Michael Goff for this ARC. -

Booze Over Broadway is an appealing collection of recipes combining everyone's perennial favorites, booze and stage musicals. Due out in late 2021 from Simon & Schuster on their
Tiller Press imprint, it's 160 pages and will be available in hardcover and ebook formats.
This is such an exuberant and well written ode to historical and classic cocktails and they've all been given punny tie-in names ("Life is a Cabernet", "Rum Tum Tugger" and 48 more). The author is clearly enamored of the theatre and has selected cocktails which will enhance watch parties or serve very well as pre-performance aperitifs. This is not just a bar book full of recipes. It's a history essay with recipes interspersed in the relevant stories. The recipes contain which musical they're giving homage to as well as some trivia and info about the different musicals.
Each of the recipes includes an introductory description and yields, appropriate barware and serving glass, ingredients in American standard measures (oz, tsp, etc), and step by step instructions. Variations and alternatives are provided at the end of the recipes. The book also includes a concise conversion chart, and index.
Many of the ingredients should be available at any well stocked grocery/liquor store although some might need to be sourced at specialists. Cocktails are such a civilized interlude and this book includes a solid cross section of classics to build mixology skills and impress one's friends at the next gathering.
Four stars. The recipes are mostly tongue-in-cheek renamed updates on classics (sidecar, Tom Collins, daquiri, whiskey sour, etc). The extra show trivia is nifty though, and worth a look for lovers of musical theatre.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes. -
The cocktail recipes seem to be great and there are helpful tips on the first few pages on the book about how to serve certain cocktails and which glassware to use. That's great, however there are little drawings next to the glasses that are supposed to show the shape of the glass, instead of actual pictures. There are no pictures whatsoever of the cocktails throughout the book either, and I really miss those. I like to see a well photographed picture next to recipes, whether if it's a dish or a cocktail. The table of contents is written in white, using serif fonts on a black background and it's not the easiest to read it. The use of many different fonts make a book rather hard to read and patchy. I'd also appreciate an index or something at the end of the book that would list the different ingredients and would point to the pages where that given ingredient is part of a cocktail. (There is an index in the book but that isn't very useful IMO.)
I'd like to thank Goodreads for the complimentary copy. -
Booze Over Broadway isn't just a cocktail recipe book (but it is that), and it's not a how to be the best darn bartender in your suburb book (but it is that too). This volume should never be tucked away on a bookshelf or hidden in the shadows behind your personal home bar. Leave it out on the coffee table, perhaps opened in a deliberately casual manner to the page featuring your favorite Broadway show. Your guests won't be able to resist picking it up to read the fast-facts about the show, ogle a saucy, vintage-yet-not illustration, and lick their lips over a special cocktail designed to go specifically with the featured show. What fun!
With fifty drinks-and-a-show featured, you're sure to find a favorite and your guests will certainly keep you dancing as you serve up a 'Little Shot of Horrors', or maybe a Funny Girl will request a 'Don't Rum On My Parade'. My favorite? Why, 'West Sidecar Story', of course. Or is it 'Annie Get Your Gin'? Aw, shoot! -
A big thank-you to NetGalley, the author, and publisher for giving me a copy of this book for an unbiased review.
3/5 - Liked it.
This is a great book for those who enjoy musicals and making at-home cocktails. Each cocktail is related to a musical, with beautiful illustrations and musical history accompanying the recipes. I enjoyed the book overall and noted a few recipes I would like to try. There is also a section to help beginner bartenders understand the difference between glasses, liquors, and blending techniques, which I thought was a nice touch. The recipes are creatively named, though unfortunately not always thematically related to the musical - which is really what I was hoping for. The connection to the cocktail seems to be more in the punny name than in the appearance or flavor, which was a negative for me. However, this is an enjoyable book - especially if received as a gift. -
What a delight!
Yes, I need to buy myself a physical copy immediately to try out these recipes.
This lovely book has a whole guide at the front to types of glasses to how to mix and every tool you would need to be a fantastic mixologist.
Then we get a delightful dive into the musicals and their paired cocktails - with fun facts and punnier puns, the cocktails all sound delicious.
Some faves (bonus points if you can guess the Musical):
- If I Were a Rich Man(hattan)
- Once on This Long Island Iced Tea
- Oh What a Beautiful, Mai Tai
- Annie, Get Your Gin
- Defying Grenadine
- They Both Reached for the Gin
- Don't Cry for Me Appletini
- One Drink More
(& the list goes on)
Loved it! -
This is a cute 160 page book on everything drinks. There's a nice section with tips from the bartender and other things like glassware and garnishes.
Then comes the drinks! With drink recipes and twists on classic drinks this is a must have for cocktail parties.
All the sections are after Broadway musicals and shows with the first date it showed and other fun facts. For example Beauty and the Beast has Beauty and the bellini. Sunset Blvd and then Tequila Sunset Blvd.
Such a great book to add to the kitchen! Thank you to S/Simon Element and Tiller Press for my gifted copy won in a goodreads giveaway. -
I absolutely love Broadway musicals. This book is perfect for someone like me, a musical fan who loves a themed cocktail. Now are the cocktails good? They were amazing. The premise of this book is cocktails inspired by musicals, named after the musicals such as Les Miserables, Hamilton, and of course all of the classics like South Pacific which was just the perfect cocktail on a warm day. I absolutely love this book and if you have a cocktail loving Broadway fan, this book would be perfect! Thank you to NetGalley and Tiller Press for providing a copy in exchange for an honest review.
