Barnstone's lucid, elegant translations include a representative sampling of all the significant Greek lyric poets, from Archilochus, in the seventh century B.C., through Pindar ("prince of choral poets") and the other great singers of the classical age, down to the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods. William McCulloh's introduction illuminates the forms and development of the Greek lyric. Barnstone introduces each poet with a brief biographical and literary sketch. The critical apparatus includes a glossary, index, bibliography, and concordance.

Willis Barnstone is one of the best translators we have and this specific translation of Sappho shows his capability to disappear on the page. Everything is silenced and the twenty-six-hundred years, between Sappho and yourself, becomes much closer. A great experience...I read through it a few times as it was one of the books on my book/night stand/pile.

A wide selection of Ancient Greek lyric poets. I wish it was notated better when a poem was a fragment. In a different book, elipses were used to show missing portions. In this one, it was difficult to tell if the poem ended that way, or if that was all we had to go with.
This translation also wasn’t my favorite; in another book (World Poetry anthology by Norton) there were some poems that were also in this collection, so I have some exposure to other translations on a few of the poems. I like being able to compare different translations of the same poem.
As far as the poetry itself, there are ones that really resonated with me, some that I had no clue about, and lots that I understood the references for. -
Omg If you get a chance please please dear reader get this book will his barn stones work here is so diligent and so relentless and so incredible and so engaging and so beautiful I have found things in here that I haven’t found anywhere else and I really did study Greek poetry with care but this is got another angle on Altman for example. So it’s not really that I come to this necessarily for the Sappho perhaps am I am I guess somewhere else but what I do come here for is the rest of the book which is life altering permanent and opening his translation of argument night I don’t know what else to say I’m still speechless

Small, simple poetry for a small, simple sapphic. Whimsically written, the pages seep with passion. Sort of like your day to day poetry book but about love and living a sapphic life. Dressed in traditional Grecian emotional intensity, the portrayal of burning love is phenomenal. I feel that Willis Barnstone has a special place in Sappho's heart for translating her poetry so well. 💖
