Harald took the sword, drew it, or was half drawing it, admiringly from the scabbard, when the English excellency broke into a scornful laugh, "Ha, ha; thou art now the feudatory of my English king; thou hast accepted the sword from him, and art now his man!" (acceptance of a sword in that manner being the symbol of investiture in those days.) Harald looked a trifle flurried, it is probable; but held in his wrath, and did no damage to the tricksy Englishman.

Early Kings of Norway Reviews

A very good book if you're interested in the history of Norway! It reads in a very entertaining way, but is full of facts. I really enjoyed it, and recommend it for anyone looking for a quick read into Norway's kings of old!

As far as historical accounts go this one seems to tick all the boxes: it’s informative. Uh, yeah. After that, it’s a pretty dry history of some juicy historical stuff. Maybe I’m overawed by History’s Vikings. That’s a distinct possibility. But somehow this reads more like Leviticus/Numbers rather than the Orkneyinga/Volsungs Saga.

Good material well read in the Librivox edition.

Now, you need to quite like things like the early kings of Norway for this book to be right for you, but, assuming you're reading this because that is your thing, then this is an excellent summary of the early kings of Norway, which is well read and very interesting.

Although the subject matter is interesting, reading this book was not a little tedious. I kept putting this book down to finish other books. However, now that I'm finished with this one I did learn from it.

    Norse family tree excitement.
