Advent is the Church’s way of observing and remembering, of marking the truth we believe that God came to be with us once, and God is still with us, and God is coming again to set all things right. During these weeks, Christians all around the world – in churches and in homes, in refugee camps and on the streets, alone or together – light candles for Advent.

Guided by the Carmelite themes of Waiting, Accepting, Journeying, and Birthing, this devotional offers readers prayers, scripture, essays, and reflection questions for each candle of Advent as we journey towards Christmas.

I needed something deeper and this was it. Beautifully written to provide insight and connection during the Advent season.

Sarah Bessey's 2020 Advent Devotional worked just as well as a personal 2021 Advent Devotional. Where as
The Soul of Christmas really helped me focus on the hopeful, soulful, importance of tending to the season, this book helped me ground some of my anxiety, sorrow, and uncertainty within Advent too. Using the themes in the title (Waiting, Accepting, Journeying, Birthing) as themes for the 4 weeks of advent was really powerful, and spoke to the vast mysteries of life, the hard parts and there really good parts. There is a lot of beauty and wisdom in this book, and a lot of stripping away what we think it means to be Christian and celebrate Christmas for things I have come to believe are a little closer to Jesus. Highly, highly recommend.
