Brodie Pike knew he shouldn’t get involved. It would somehow turn out bad, as seemed to happen too often to him, but he couldn’t watch four gunmen bully a small-time rancher. The next day, the man he had helped is found beaten to death. Though he knows he is responsible for Dunn’s death, he refuses to help the group of small ranchers who know that the Buckskin County Cattlemen’s Association will be coming for their land soon.
Months later, he reads that the association has started its campaign of terror against the small ranchers. Against the odds, he decides to throw in with them, facing the association’s horde of hired guns, risking his life in the bloody, violent Buckskin County war, where death is always just one bullet away.

When is helping a fellow out not the right thing to do? When there’s a range war going on!
Brodie Pike had been on the trail of Jethro Harker and his gang for some time. Arriving in Graystone, after taking care of his horse and gear, he checked into the hotel, had some dinner, then he decided to have a drink and call it an early night. While he was standing there, he noticed four gunmen bulling a young man that looked like he was a small-time rancher or farmer. After about 5 minutes, even though he knew it was a bad move, he just could not stomach it anymore. He stepped in. When the bartender pulled a double-barreled shotgun, he encouraged Brodie and the young man to leave, and he would be insisting that the bullies stay for a while, adding his suggestion that they both might want to leave town. The two stepped out and the young man thanked him. Then he gave a brief description of how the rich cattlemen were using the Buckskin County Cattlemen’s Association to run the small ranchers out of the area with gun thugs, such as the four inside. This is so they can take over their places for themselves. Brodie advised the young man to go home.
The next morning as he left his hotel, a man stepped near him holding his gun, wearing a Marshall’s badge, and telling him that they needed to talk. Brodie’s first impression told him that this man was in the pocket of the big ranchers, and he immediately felt empathy for the young man he had helped the previous evening. Next, the Marshall tells him that he suspects Brodie of killing the young man, as he was the last man to have seen him. Having words with him, relieving him of his gun, he emptied the gun, and walked away, telling him to look for the real killers somewhere else. All the while knowing that there was no hope of that. Brodie had some more decisions to make, and he certainly didn’t like it one bit.
Join Brodie as he continues to hunt down the Harker gang, gets shot up, and joins a war…
What did I like? I had previously reviewed Book two of this series and I enjoyed it so much I knew that I needed to read the first book. I sure am not sorry, it is a rip tooting, exciting, and action-packed storyline that had me from page one. I remember many years ago when my grandfather and a couple of his brothers got into it with one of their neighbors. Of course, I didn’t know at the time the devastation that sheep havocked on the grazing land, but I sure do now. It was a short-lived war, with granddad finally getting rid of the sheep and going back to his cattle, but it taught me a lesson. Reading this book brought back all those memories of the big guy wanting the little guys out of their paths or at least to buckle under to their demands. Of course, it never got to the same level as this book, but had it been maybe 50 years earlier, it might have.
What will you like? The action starts on the first page and builds as the pages turn. The characters are just amazing, as John builds them with lots of details and descriptions. He uses those same words and creates this wonderful countryside so that you feel the wind in your face or the whistle of the bullet over your shoulder. Then he tosses in this mystery for the if and when situations, that keep you guessing what will happen next. Next throwing in a little intrigue with infatuation, and a ton of family values for a VERY enjoyable read that flows excitingly with the sound of bullets flying.

Hum
Brodie Pike is a bounty hunter, a hard man, good with a gun, and a loner. Plenty of action from start to finish. -
Great read with a fast moving story. I like these kinds of tales. Straight up good versus evil story set around cattle and small ranchers. Also the reluctant hero.
John Legg once again tells a great story. Can't go wrong with this one. -
So badly written, I couldn't even finish the book.
