He walked away once… he won’t make that mistake again.

Former MF7 Operative Jason Stone is back in town and he can’t stop thinking about the woman he left behind: Jules Bellerose. She’s the love of his life, the one that got away… but he’s the bullet she dodged.

Ever since he ghosted her, Jules has made a name for herself, arguing for second chances in every courthouse across the southeast. When Jason’s sister goes missing, he’s the prime suspect, and he needs the best defense attorney there is. Good thing he still remembers her number.

Jules swore off love after Jason broke her heart. Defending her clients is her main priority now. But when her past collides with her present, it gets harder to believe that Jason is “just a client.” Especially after one heated argument in particular becomes much, much more.

When her own life is in danger, the tables turn and she has to depend on Jason to be her protector again. Self-control is impossible when it’s just the two of them, but what will he think of her after she confesses her own secrets?

Only one thing is for certain.

Keeping her hands off her new client will be the toughest case she’s had yet.

ESCAPING CONVICTION is the suspenseful first chapter in the Conviction Series of interconnected standalones. Jason and Jules get their happily-ever-after and a new couple gets their own HEA in Book Two, while the entire series carries an overarching plot.

**While Escaping Conviction has an HEA, this read is not for the faint of heart. The Conviction series should be read by mature readers only (18+) and contains sexually explicit scenes, along with descriptions of human trafficking, drugs, strong language, and physical and sexual violence. Reader discretion is advised.**

4.5 - review to come but I loved this romantic suspense!

Escaping Conviction is Greer Rivers debut novel and I’m so glad I got to read an ARC copy! I love romantic suspense novels and this one was the perfect blend of romance and the suspense plot woven through.

Jason has returned to Ashland after being away for years fighting the bad guys. When he left, Jules was heartbroken but channeled that into becoming a BAB (Boss Ass Bitch) and dominating the legal field. Jason is arrested in connection with his sister’s disappearance and calls the best defense lawyer in the county. Jules and Jason must work quickly trying to find out where and what happened to Jason’s sister while Jason is being framed for various crimes.

The story is so beautifully told and the second chance romance between Jules and Jason is perfect. It’s told from a few different character’s point of view which is so nice to see the suspense piece unfold.

I finished the book but wouldn't recommend it. There was just too much going on for this story to work for me. It was just one dramatic thing after another with too many connections to be realistic.

A few things bothered me a lot.

    1. The male lead's kid sister is kidnapped into a sex trafficking ring and the couple is far too obsessed with their relationship while it's going on that it's not believable. The author tries to cover it up with chapters of their guilt but it's just too much.

    2. The female lead is just too fake. It's too much for all the men to be so obsessed with her. For her to be so good at her job. Etc. Etc.

    3. This elite team sucks at their job. One guy gets shot taking on two Russian mobsters that he should have known he needed to take care of. The team should have been told what was going on. And yet? He gets shot and ends up in a coma with ANOTHER character getting kidnapped. Then they only take 3 men into a rescue like that's enough for the job. It's not and it's absurd that the author thinks that only 5 pairs of boots on the ground (one died before the book starts and one was in a coma) was reaching women from sex trafficking organizations. The team was seven total, one being a pilot and one a techie that couldn't figure out what "smart device" might have called 911.

    4. Too many coincidences and too much shit that was illogical so the plot "worked."

"I may not know your immediate plans in the future. But. I. Know. You."

Oh my gosh, this book has it all! Second chances, heart pumping action, moments so heartbreaking it will make you scream at the book (and maybe at Miss Rivers a bit too) Sexy scenes so hot you will want to melt, and an ending soooooo good you'll be flipping the pages or swiping franticly at your kindle because you wish there was more.
Jules and Jason are perfection together. Separately, they are two strong amazing characters that are so likeable you fall in love with them. Together they are pure fire, and I found it so easy to root for them. I loved watching them resolve things that happened and rediscover each other!
As for the style and the way it's all written, Rivers has an amazing prose and way with words. It's so readable and loveable! Every second of this book was amazing and can't wait for more from this author.
5/5 stars for me. I'm so thankful I got to ARC this book. It was amazing.

The writing was weird and it just didn't work for me. I was very interested in the human trafficking plot and the romance kinda sucked for me. Honestly thought the sex scenes were ill placed. His sister, her best friend have literally been kidnapped to be sold to a sex human trafficking ring but yes let's have sex. Tbh if that was me, I wouldn't even be in the mood for anything if my sister was taken. It felt a little disconcerting and kinda disconnected from the severity of the overarching plot. I would've been more into this book if it just focused on finding Ellie and why Jason was being framed for it all

DNF at chapter 4. Just couldn’t seem to get into it and the writing wasn’t for me.

A HOT 3.75 stars rounding up to a 4 for new to me author Greer Rivers!!

This is my first book by Greer, and I find myself in love with her characters by the END of the book.

The ML in Escaping Conviction, Jason, is a former Army special forces, super sneaky, sexy guy that abandoned his woman and his sister trying to help rescue women and girls who were victims of human trafficking. He's sweet, but ignoring his suffering PTSD when he gets back, and continues to ignore his sister and not try to make things right with his ex. On top of all this when he does back up with the ex it's because he's been arrested on suspicion of murder and is a suspect in a missing person's case. Instead of focusing on this, he's immediately arrogant, wanting to somehow show her what she's been missing, as though he didn't abandon her for a hot minute!

Juliet, the FL, is much more likeable, super smart, working as a defense attorney, she's been watching out for Jason's sister while hes been gone. The only thing I didn't like about her was I felt she gave in too quickly, while still maybe holding on to her anger too long. Other than that I absolutely love her brash intelligence, her wit, her sense of humor, all of it!

I loved all of the suspense parts of this book, i thought the Crew was awesome, Jules assistant, Nora is a complete Bada$$, and leaving it for the last minute to see if the Crew could beat out the bad guys, find the girls, and figure out if they could keep Jason from spending the rest of his life behind bars was OUT OF THIS WORLD!!

The epilogue was righteous, and I think the series will be bomb-tastic as long as the guys aren't so severely stuck in their own way for quite so long. Other than that I thought the book ended great, and the series has an excellent future ahead.

I am blown away by the writing and multiple POV's that flow smoothly throughout the book. The emotions as you go along for the ride with Jules and Jason will have you feeling all the feels! The suspense and the twists are perfectly intertwined throughout the story!
Escaping Conviction is easily part of my top reads of 2021! So good!

I am looking forward to devouring the rest of the Night Stalkers series!!!

Jules aka Juliet is a former striper turn  defense lawyer and is the best of the best.
Jason is a Veteran now bounty hunter whos sister is missing and is the prime suspect in the disappearance. I love the banter between them two and the fact does she can act nonchalant afterwards make me laugh. If this was a movie i would go see in theaters, like they get second chance make things right & it has suspense a action film in the works. Warning it does contains triggers 18+

Escaping Conviction is the first book EVER by Greer and is also the first book in the Conviction Series. This book immediately drew me in and kept me on the edge the entire time with the suspense and twisting of the story. It is a second chance romance HEA that can be read as a standalone, but all books will be connected. The writing style is multiple POV and told in 3rd person. This is very different from what I usually read but its a nice change of scenery and fits perfectly with this story, considering it threw me off for a few chapters. Even though we have a HEA, the road to get there does have some triggers so please keep that in mind.

"𝐼'𝑣𝑒 𝑠𝑒𝑒𝑛 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑎𝑟𝑔𝑢𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑠𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑑 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒𝑠, 𝑏𝑎𝑏𝑦. 𝐼'𝑚 𝑗𝑢𝑠𝑡 𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑟 ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒, ℎ𝑜𝑝𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑦𝑜𝑢'𝑟𝑒 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡𝑜 𝑔𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑚𝑒 𝑜𝑛𝑒, 𝑡𝑜𝑜."

Jules and Jason have a history thats painful, even after 7 years. Shes a former stripper turned defense lawyer and hes a veteran with emotional trauma. When Jasons sister and her friend turn up missing, Jason is the prime suspect when he reports his findings. The problem? Law enforcement is determined to pin Jason as the guilty party and Jules will do everything to prove his innocence. The clock is ticking and someone is determined to pin this on Jason and bring him down for the fall, but the question remains as to who would do this and why? Will they be able to find the missing girls and solve the case before its too late, in more ways than one? Will Jason be able to put aside his own emotional trauma to make the necessary call needed to help put these pieces together and maybe even repair what he broke with Jules?

Heart wrenching and uplifting, making you red hot and skin-tinglingly cold in turns, this really is a complex and multifaceted book.

The pace is fast, the plot believable and the characters come across as very alive in their humanity.
Yes, it is horrifying how the villains thrive, and maybe the reason is that many people just don't want to believe that such evil is possible, they prefer to live their normal lives in their micro-universe and forget that war, human trafficking and child abuse are real as long as it doesn't impact them.

But it does exist, as does love, heartbreak, friendship, hope and redemption. It's what I loved about this book - it is so well written it conveys it all, I really had a hard time putting it down. Even when I had the impulse to think "well, isn't this far-fetched?" I came to the conclusion that it is possible, the human psyche is strange like that.

I'm glad I happened upon such a talented, promising author, and I look forward to reading the next book.

Escaping Conviction ● Conviction Series Book One
    *ARC Review*
    ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
    @authorgreerrivers

If I had go choose one word to describe this book- INTENSE!

Jules is a lawyer. Her boyfriend, Jason, who left her without a trace 7 years before, calls her from the police station to defend him. He has been framed for the disappearance of his sister & her friend. They discover she's been taken as part of a human trafficking ring & work to rescue her.

This story is powerful and consuming. It was quite difficult to read at times when details of the human trafficking are revealed. Some parts made me feel nauseous, other parts made me cry- both happy & sad tears. The love story between Jules & Jason was beautiful & so emotional. Plus, their sex was 🔥

I was thoroughly impressed by Greer's attention to detail with the law & military aspects of the plot. We are left with a HEA of sorts with the indication of more turmoil to come in book 2. Seriously, you need to read this one!

  • Whitney Weaver

I went into this book blindly, never having read a Greer Rivers book before and honestly had no expectations about her writing. But lord help me this book blew me away!

From the very first page I was wrapped up in the bad ass Jules as she navigated the judicial system with her first love Jason as her new client. You'll be turning page after page through suspense, murder, romance and those 18+ scenes as you try and figure out who is trying to frame Jason for his missing sister. All while

Buckle up my fellow Bad Ass Bitches, this is going to be a fun ride!

  • Carrie Lansberry

I was given this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review

It is hard to believe that this is her first full book. The writing draws you in, there was enough suspense to keep you guessing and the heat is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 amazing! This second chance, romance/suspense is addictive. There are twists that I didn't expect and a redemption ARC I wasn't sure I wanted but it was amazing.

  • Kara Wentland

This was a nice little escape, different. The plot was a bit scattered and could have used a lot more character and world building, but overall not bad. I have a feeling the second book is going to be a lot better and more intriguing. Her writing started improving towards the end and the second book preview looked promising.

Second chance romance isn't usually my thing but Jason won me over, no lies 🥰 this book was super suspenseful and stressed me out but it had me crying for fictional characters I didn't even think I liked. I love how Greer Rivers writes (even though it is third person POV).

    Trigger Warnings include:
human trafficking, physical & sexual violence

This was a ride! If you’re into true crime, or something like Criminal Minds, but still want some spice on the side, this is the way to go! Think mafia romance, without the mafia. There’s definitely steam! But there’s a heavy focus on the suspense. The title is very on point; Jason is trying to escape conviction, and his ex is going to help him do it! This was fighting for the ones you love to the extreme! The love in this book knew no bounds! There’s lots of drama and it’s not lacking plot twists either! I was genuinely surprised when things started happening and making sense so early on, until things truly started to happen. Everything is connected, everything is chaos, everything hurts! It’s always nice to read a book, and not be able to compare it to anything else you’ve previously read.

    My Favorite Quotes:
•”Baby, if you purr when I pet you, I ain’t gonna stop.”
•”I’m not letting you go after this.”
•”I’ll do everything in my power to heal you, to comfort you, to love you.”
•”Your first. Your last. Your only, baby.”
•”I don’t want to be a me without you.”

    7/10 Dirty Birdy
    7/10 Second Chance

  • Kerri Seaman

Okay so this was kind of trash but enjoyable trash? Honestly the writing wasn’t too bad and I didn’t feel our main love interest was toxic which is a usual concern for these kinds of books. An absolutely ridiculous plot line (and it was pretty plot heavy) but I don’t mind, we got the good stuff peppered in there if you know what I mean.

OOOOO WEEEE did this have me turning the page AND drooling! This one really had me going, let me tell you that.

Greer Rivers did a phenomenal job with character development, intertwining storylines/plots, and flawless POV changes each chapter. I fell in LOVE with the main characters by the end of the book...even the not so "good" characters. This book kept me engaged and at times, got my heart racing. I lived for the second-chance at romance for Jason and Jules. I felt my heart ache, break, and heal all at once through this journey with Jason and Jules.

We can't forget about the chills, nausea, and anger I experienced with poor Ellie, Sasha and fellow victims/survivors. Rivers did an immaculate job with detailing one of the many experiences human trafficking victims have without giving too many gruesome details. Far too often, books will dive far too deep into detail to get the "message across." Rivers brought so much awareness in this riveting fictional story without bringing too many dark details/depictions.

The writing style also made it effortless to read through this book. I adored the steamy/sexy scenes with the right amount of ooo-la-la and romance. It was not overbearing or, for the most part, cliche. As much as I enjoyed the sex scenes, the part that really solidified this book for me is the fact that book can stand alone and impress an audience without them.

I felt the roller coaster of emotions in this book. Greer Rivers, you pulled at ALL the strings and I'm so happy that you did.

This was my first steamy/crime book and it will not be my last. I highly recommend this to anyone and everyone. BRB while I go purchase and start the second book in this series.

  • Sherlock Hughes

I'm a sucker for a good second chance romance story and this one was amazing! The story itself was well written, the characters were likable, and the banter was spot-on! I honestly would have never guessed this was a debut novel!

Jules was hands down my favorite character! She commands respect from everyone around her, she's passionate about what she does and she's one of the best in her feild. Even just the description of her heels click-clacking against the floor causing conversations to hush made me want to be her when I grow up (except I'm already older than her). I liked Jason a lot but he tested my patience too. I admired the work he did every once in a while I wanted to just shake him. I enjoyed some of the other side characters, especially Marco.. I don't know what it was about him but I would gladly read a story about him.

The plot moved at a great pace, there were some good twists and turns thrown in there and the ending was fantastic!! There was tons of suspense that left me on the edge of my seat. I enjoyed the 3rd person narrative, I thought it helped enhance the story and it allowed for us to get multiple POVs. I honestly can't wait for the next book to come out!

Greer Rivers is definitely an author to keep your eye on and I highly recommend this book!

*I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own*

So much happened in this book that I don’t know where to start. The author created such a great overarching plot, I was so surprised with where this book went. I thought it was just going to be a regular romance with a little bit of a mystery but it ended up being a lot more mystery and action. Of course it was romance but it seemed a bit secondary to the plot. No complaints though because it really was an interesting plot. I’m interested to see where this continues with the next book. The books in the series are standalone with the overarching plot, but I think reading them an order is extremely beneficial.

I think this book was written more like a mystery novel instead of the usual first person point of view in romance novels. There were chapters with different point of views but it felt more like descriptions rather than being in that person’s head. If you know what I mean. No complaints, I think it worked really well.

This book is a good balance between mystery and romance. The romance was definitely cute, but I feel like I was more interested in the mystery, and potentially other romances then the romance featured in this book. It’s a second chance romance, so there was drama and misunderstandings and then it all worked out in the end. It was alright. I would definitely check out this novel if you like mystery though. Looking forward to the second book in the series to learn more about mystery and also see the focus on the next couple.
