All small towns have secrets...

When a troubled teenage girl goes missing in a remote Colorado ski valley, Denver private investigator Rick Malone is called in for help by an old friend accused of involvement in the disappearance.

Within hours, he finds himself snowed in and in conflict with local law enforcement, not to mention working with an ex-lover and partner from a past he’d rather forget. Making matters worse, Malone's ongoing mental health issues come bubbling to the surface, filling his mind with static at a time when danger abounds, pushing him to the edge of sanity.

As tensions run high and leads run low, Malone will learn that all small towns have their secrets, and sometimes powerful people will do anything to keep those secrets buried beneath the snow.

One Way Out: A Rick Malone Novel Reviews

  • Scott Cumming

Rick Malone heads to a small mountain town after an old friend calls to let him know he is being held on suspicion of foul play following the disappearance of a teenage girl. The neighbouring town is where his ex-wife and ex-best friend now live having re-married and alongside the case, this brings another element for our bipolar P.I. to have to deal with.

Pool brings us a stereotypical P.I. tale that is peppered with his real life experiences as a private eye. My favourite parts in the early going are Malone looking to ingratiate himself with the locals to get any hint of a lead and working the nightshift at the gas station and getting high with them. The bipolar element is played well with the character’s experiences of the condition allowing him to know his triggers and the feelings that beset him. You can really feel the stress and anxiety involved with the condition. It’s a fine introduction to the character in a book that focuses more on him than the mystery.

Looking forward to more from Pool and Malone forthcoming and hoping for more exciting P.I. Tales.
