From the author of the bestselling novel, The Loyal Angel , comes a captivating tale of hope, love, and triumph in a world torn apart.
This is the incredible true story of Joe Senta, a poor immigrant who refuses to let the Great Depression defeat him. When his father dies, leaving his family to fend for themselves, Joe must find a way to help them survive in a time of great hardship. With sheer determination and a quick wit, he fights his way through adversity, helping his family, his friends, and eventually, his entire town, make it through the depression.
But Joe's trials are far from over. When the United States is attacked at Pearl Harbor, he enlists as a bomber pilot, ready to take the fight to Nazi Germany. During one fateful mission, his B-17 is hit, and as his crew prepares to bail, Joe makes a daring to steer his crippled plane toward Slovenia, the native country of his immigrant parents. He still speaks the language, and if he can communicate with the locals, he might just get some help.
Injured and on the run, Joe discovers that his entire life has prepared him for this moment. All the struggles of his childhood, things that seemed like burdens at the time, now become his greatest source of strength. His crew is counting on him, and Joe will need to draw on everything he has learned if he is to evade the Germans, lead his men to safety, and return home to the woman he loves.
Follow Joe from the trials of the Great Depression to the battlefields of World War II as he fights against all odds to prove that he is more than just a product of his circumstances. A heart-pumping tale of courage, determination, and the power of the unbreakable human spirit, this poignant and inspiring novel will stay with you long after the final page is turned.

What a captivating book. I kept wanting to know what happens next, so I read the whole book in one sitting. I'm now rereading it to get even more out of it. I like that it goes through Joe's childhood, his adventures and misadventures, up through his military career. You can see how his character is shaped and grows. Joe sounds like an amazing man. His story is remarkable.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great story of courage and leadership
I've read many WW2 novels, and this was one of the best. I enjoyed the life story and how the author was able to weave those learnings into the actions taken during combat and escape. Great book!

Not my favorite
I must say. I LOVED The authors first book. I was mesmerized from start to finish. This book went in an entirely different direction and that is not necessarily a bad thing.
I guess I was just expecting to be spiritually fed like his previous novel. He’s still an excellent writer -
Absolutely a wonderful book!
The story of this pilot and what he did was amazing. The telling of this story is wonderful, intriguing and yet so easy to read and place you inside the story as if you are there.
