It's Draco Malfoy's second third year at Hogwarts, and it's the second time he's thirteen, but it's the first time he's had anything to do with Sirius Black.

The trouble with having been sent back into the past and rebecoming his 11 year-old self (in "Draco Malfoy and the Mirror of Ecidyrue") is that he knows what the future is supposed to look like, but not how it got that way. Wormtail brought back Voldemort, but where did he come from? Sirius Black was murdered by Bellatrix Lestrange and mourned by Harry Potter, but how did the two meet and how did everyone know Black was on Dumbledore's side?

Draco is pretty lucky that destiny is a force to be reckoned with, because his interference leads to a lot of complications.

I think I've said it before, but I love how this series manages to echo canon, while at the same time being surprising and having all sorts of twists and turns - and you can just feel things being set up for the future. Meanwhile, Draco's snarky self remains a delight.

"Potter," Draco said, and took his other hand, not caring about the chocolate it had on it. "Look at me. Yes, the business about the cat and rat and the broomstick didn't help, and yes, I consider you my eternal rival and nemesis, locked forever in mortal combat from which only one can ever emerge victorious. But-" He ignored Ron and Hermione's gawking. "But if you can try and understand that I have been trying with every fiber of my being to give you a family again, then maybe then you will understand how I feel about you."

I SWEAR TO GOD IM IN LOVE WITH THEM

Okay, I've read three of these now, and while three in as many days indicates there's something I genuinely like about this series, I'm also on the verge of dropping it. The humor and general minute-to-minute bickering between the characters is superb, and I'm enjoying Drarry as a pairing as I have for years now, but everything else is a bit of a mess in my opinion. So, to business...

I think what's been bothering me most has been how reluctant this series is to leave the original plot structure, to the point of repeating scenes verbatim with Draco/others now there, giving other characters' lines from canon to Draco or others, etc, and noticing where those cuts take place never fails to distract me from the scene. Otherwise, the character drama is quite well handled, but in terms of the bigger picture, this series struggles to find a balance between screaming angst, shouting matches, and syrupy sweet family fluff, with there somehow being an overabundance of all of them. There are never quiet moments in Draco Malfoy's head, or never quiet enough outside of his sadly quite rare romantic scenes with Harry. I wouldn't call its handling of angst amateurish, exactly, just kind of lacking in subtlety and in dire need of editing, which is far from unheard of in serial fiction. It's easy to write something chapter by chapter and not notice just how oppressive the constant emotional seesawing can get, right?

Fics like the Sacrifices Arc and Snowbound and such have spoiled me on how much fans can rehabilitate potterverse worldbuilding, even despite JKR's repugnant beliefs, and this one is sadly pretty lacking on that front. I enjoyed Draco's confusion and terror of muggle London, but he and other purebloods don't really feel like they have a culture of their own that contrasts/conflicts with the muggle one. They never had one in canon, either, but I'd have appreciated an attempt to fix that, given we're getting a pureblood perspective here. A bit saddening, but this series is hardly alone there.

Carrying on the train of things I kinda disliked: action scenes. There was a little too much screaming of incantations, and a bit too little flow to the action, and they just tended to make my eyes glaze over, sorry. The one time this actually landed was probably the Chamber of Secrets fight, and that's more of a romance scene for Draco than anything.

The romance is probably the one thing I unambiguously like besides the humor. Drarry's mutual swings between taunting and vulnerability is very fun and feels like quite a natural extension to their canon dynamic. The other pairings up to this point? Eeeh... what's there is very sweet, but I'm getting the vibe that any character this author likes will get paired up so they're not 'lonely' or something and oops what's my vomit doing there?

So yeah, very mixed bag of a series so far. I think I want to like it more than I do? It's fun, but in a popcorn kind of way, and I was kinda hoping for something more substantial.

Potter lucía inexplicablemente nervioso. "Gracias Draco", dijo suavemente.

This one was the right amount of true to the book and THANK MERLIN THIS IS DIFFERENT. I was frustrated because there wasn’t enough Moony or Padfoot interactions with Draco but the story stays true to PoA in that, Draco can’t from the start have a relationship with these two in the same way Harry does. If only for Severus’ presence.

You’d forget how badly Severus can’t go over what happened to him in his fifth year and it’s nice to see him put it aside (but not forget) for the sake of Draco.

(I don’t really buy into the the whole Snape is Draco godfather in general but I don’t doubt he could care and love him nonetheless)

My first love is still the marauders so I’m hoping the way things remained the same and the way things were altered with the choices Draco made, means Sirius won’t die AND I’m just waiting for Wolfstar to adopt all the kids now.

It’s truly the first time Draco does change so much by choice rather than following the blue line/loop and doing damage control at the last minute. I love that he goes more toward his Black heritage and I’m hoping this will evolve for him rather than relying on his Malfoy name solely, especially while his father he’s still around.

I’m also curious of how Sirius will evolve as we didn’t have yet a glimpse of his more snarky & charming self and how knowing Draco & being saved by Severus will truly impact him.

It’s really weird to re-read this events with the fear of what will remain the same and what won’t. But it’s realistically well done that some details have greater impacts than big different choices made with insight.

    I love ♥️💚

    AHHHHHH, SO MANY TWISTS!!
    And REMUS AND SIRIUS!!
    AND That eNDING, SQUEEEEEEEE--
    Also: FUCK Peter Pettigrew.

I'm so into this series, man, it isn't even funny. It really knows how to get me all excited for whatever is to come.

I have a few complaints, though.
Sometimes, the writing is wonky and leaves out certain actions or descriptions from the scene, leaving me confused. In a similar way, many details are skimmed over or completely skipped concerning the original plot, which is unfortunate because it's been a while since I read Harry Potter, and I don't remember all these little details and facts. Not to mention, there are SO many spells cast in this book that are never explained. There were several duels where I just had to skip over them because I had absolutely no clue what was going on.

Anyway, I liked Draco's character a LOT more in this book. We got a lot more depth with the Boggart, and his single-minded mission to help Sirius, plus all of his panic attacks and meltdowns, not to mention that RANT at Severus at the end, like DAMN.
He was a lot more of an active character, and honestly, at this point he's making even Harry look bad! Hahah.
In the last book, I thought Draco was weird for acting too mature for his age, and being too flirty, but in this book I think it felt just right. It's the perfect amount of obnoxious, arrogant teen and scared little kid. I think his true character comes out really well with everything going on.

I really can't wait to see where the author takes this series!

the humor in these fics, so good

    - "No boys in the girls' dorms, don't you know that?" "I thought that rule was just for Slytherins!" Draco called back, and Hermione looked at him puzzled. "Because we're bigger sluts," he added helpfully.
    - "Hello, I'm Luna," she said brightly, "And I think you ought to be killed."
    - " Children." Severus began to rub his temples like Draco was the human incarnation of a headache. "Why did I ever choose to teach at a school when I knew there would be children in it..."
    - "Draco," Peter Weasley informed them in a priggish tone, "Is a known homosexual at school." Draco smirked over at him unrepentantly. "So is your brother Charlie, isn't he? Shame he isn't home, I rather fancy Seekers. Any photographs of him you wouldn't mind parting with, Peter?" "My name is Percy," seethed Peter. Draco's nonchalant adherence to calling the prick what he knew full and well was his real name of Peter seemed to win the twins the rest of the way over.
