Sen and Anlil are childhood friends about to be parted as Sen starts down the path of priesthood, and Anlil creates a sacred offering that could save her household's reputation. As the unseen consequences of their choices unfold, Sen is drawn deeper, towards the intrigues at the heart of the priests' palace, whilst Anlil is pushed outwards, towards the boundaries of society.
Both risk their souls, and perhaps even their lives, as they uncover the secrets beyond the dark shores of the island that feels like their whole world.
The Firelight Isle, Vol. 2: The Nameless Dark Reviews
-
The first volume of The Firelight isle piqued my interest, the second has carried me on in this journey. How Duffield will get the story done in one more volume, I have no idea, but I'll be watching for it.
We follow Sen and Anlil as Sen starts his personal journey of denial of self and merging into the 'anonymous' priesthood. Anlil meanwhile is caged for her transgression and finds that cages are not just physical objects. She encounters a stranger to their civilisation who appears ignorant of many of their ways and has to make a decision to follow or stay.
The narrative is not any different from many journey narratives but it's how it's done that makes it so enchanting. The portrait format is fairly unique and the colours are so vibrant
A great story -
Recent Reads: The Firelight Isle - The Nameless Dark. Volume 2 of Paul Duffield's anthropological SF/fantasy graphic novel ramps up the mystery, inside and outside the temple. There is someone new in the village, someone from far away. Fascinating and beautiful in so many ways.
