The Monocle Book of Homes Reviews
-
Overall rather disappointing.
Too many instances where safety wasn't considered, especially not having railings on raised decks and handrails on stairways. Some photographs too dark to discern what they're depicting. One house where the write-up twice highlighted an interesting table with a firepit in the middle had no picture of it, though there were photos of other things in that house.
There was no date on any of the articles or photos, even though the parent magazine has been around for 15 years. No updates are mentioned to say if there has been any change in any of the buildings or homes since the article was originally published. We don't know if any of the Beirut houses shown are still standing after all the turmoil there in the last few years. And the book was published in 2021.
The sections are: The Homes, Essays, Community, Greenery, Materials, Details, Designs for Living. Only the first section is printed on glossy paper, the rest are on matte-finished paper. -
Lovely book to look at; difficulty understanding the homes themselves (eg. in determining how the home was laid out, etc) so really a bit of eye-candy and, when you apply some brain power, a bit of inspiration.
Borrowed from library. -
Found the first section showcasing 20 homes a little pretentious, but really liked the essays in the second half of the book!
