A patrol races to make peace with Afghan village leaders, battling time to save a snake-bitten Marine! An Army veteran whose touch can hold off death attempts to find his grip. On the streets of Washington, D.C. a former sailor is haunted by the ghost of a stalker who once threatened her career! A proud Air Force brat faces racism on an overseas playground! The crew of an Army cargo plane delivers a brand new Jeep to special forces—in the middle of a jungle firefight!
Since 2016, administered by the Chicago-based literary journal Line of Advance, the Col. Darron L. Wright Memorial Awards have served not only to highlight some of the best contemporary voices writing about modern wars—from Vietnam, to Iraq and Afghanistan—but to also creatively commemorate the life of a U.S. Army leader and writer, beloved by his family and troops.

Our Best War Stories: Prize-winning Poetry \u0026 Prose from the Col. Darron L. Wright Memorial Awards Reviews
-
Quite an enjoyable book and different from other compilations of war stories in that this contains a mix of poetry AND prose. At 219 pages with 36 poems & stories, it falls just a few pages short of a similar volume: "Why We Write: Craft Essays on Writing War", which I highly recommend as well.
I thought to name the stand-out poems and stories, but they are all magnificent and poignant. To leave out any would be a disservice to them and the entire volume.
Absolutely check this out for well-written modern war stories and poems! -
A moving collection of prose and poetry by some of our best modern writers from the military community.
-
A great collection of prose and poetry from veterans and their families. Some of the best of mil-lit in the last four years.

This is a great collection of contemporary works on war. It includes work by family members of veterans, as well as stories by veterans. Yes, I have three works in here, but all of these stories and poems are well worth your time. These writers have tried to describe their varied experiences of war. Give this book a read. Pay close attention to work by Jeremy Hussein Warneke, Dewaine Farria, Travis Klempan, Randy Brown, Ben Weakley, Laura Joyce-Hubbard, and Lisa Stice. All credit to the lit journal Line of Advance and editor Chris Lyke for collecting these works via the annual Col. Darron L. Wright Memorial Writing Awards.
