'He really was an amazing man. Strong. Both physically and mentally. A man of honor. Of service to his country. Loyal to his family.'
Here we have book two in Sleeman's 'Nighthawk Security' series and what a wonderful story Brendan's is . This series features the five Byrd brothers, all former law enforcement and/or military who have no formed an investigative/security agency.
The Byrd family has gone to their mountain cabin for a skiing Christmas holiday. When Brendan is out walking one evening, he hears a woman screaming for dear life. Turns out, that's exactly what young widow Jenna Paine is doing. Someone has broken into the cabin she won for the weekend on a radio show and is threatening her but she has no idea why. She is so afraid her four year old daughter will hear from her sleeping in the next room.
Both Jenna and Brendan have pasts that seem to haunt them and both are afraid to trust completely anyone else. But they are stuck together now as all the Byrd brothers and a sister tie up to keep Jenna safe. Because she is facing danger from more than one front.
This book was awesome in its suspense, Then again, Susan Sleeman is a master at inspirational romantic suspense. She keeps us guessing and the action never lets up. I was captivated completely. Then she threw in a few surprises that actually had me in tears. I loved every minute and highly recommend this author.
*I thank the publisher for a copy of this book. I received no compensation and the opinion in this review is entirely my own. -
3.5 stars
"She can't hide. Give her up or the next time it won't just be a brick. The whole family will be sorry."
Jenna Paine thought she and her young daughter had been given the gift of a lifetime; an all expense paid Christmas vacation in a Mt. Hood cabin; unfortunately, a vicious home invasion changed everything.
Happening upon the crime in progress, Brendan Byrd manages to rescue Jenna and Karlie from danger, then calmly persuading the distraught mother to move their belongings over to his family's property where he and his brothers could offer protection. There was just something about the beautiful woman that not only caught his eye, " . . he'd known her for what? A minute or two? And he was a goner", but potentially his heart. What in the world?
Jenna is obviously grateful for Brendan's offer of security, but she is trying so hard to stand on her own two feet after the death of her overbearing husband. Plunged her into debt and near homelessness, attraction to another alpha male type is the last thing she wants or even thinks that she needs. So much of what has happened in her life is beyond explanation, but maybe Brendan's advice bears thought, "Don't ask why.. . . . . Ask how".
Readers will love both journeys within the pages of this book; one heading towards justice and the other taking a decided turn toward matters of the heart. Both turn out tricky to navigate. . . . having clear "night vision" could mean the difference between success and failure. -
My thoughts: night vision is booked to in this series but it stands alone. It's about the second brother Brandon who here's a woman screaming and when he goes to investigate something discovers much more than he anticipated. And the reader wonders who the bad guys are and what they wanted and why and you are kept guessing through this whole story how it's going to work out. If you like romantic suspense you will love Susan Sleeman's books you will not want to miss a single one. I was given a copy for free and all opinions are my own.

I finished reading this last night. I always enjoy books set at Christmas. This story was no exception. I especially enjoyed little girl in the story who was precious and sweet.
I received a complimentary copy of the book. I was not required to leave a positive review. -
We often hear of someone being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Several cases of that occurred in this story, but Jenna also seemed to be in the right place at the right time. In fact, I would suggest that the right place at the right time far outweighed the wrong place at the wrong time. If I say much more than that, I might give away too much of the story and that would spoil it for others. We can’t have that. Suffice it to say, she never would have met the Byrd family if she had been somewhere else when her life was threatened. The Byrd brothers as featured in the Nighthawk Security series return with Brendan in the role of hero. As exciting as the action and the bravery of all of the brothers, little Karlie, the precious daughter of Jenna, was the one character who stole the hearts of the Byrd family and kept the story alive. Before the book ended, that sweet little girl had everyone wrapped around her little finger. So much of the action involved in keeping her mother safe was also designed to keep her safe as well. A huge takeaway from the story is that you have to let go of the past, no matter how difficult it may have been, in order to move forward into the life that God wants to bless you with. Too many of us cling to past mistakes, sins, shortcomings, and failures to the detriment of our future. I received an advance copy of this book from the author. This is my honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.

Ok, I'm totally loving the Byrd family! Since Peggy Byrd conveniently named her boys alphabetically we are now at Byrd brother number two, Brendan. I love his strong character. I actually love all of the Byrd guys' strong characters. They are all take-charge kind of guys. It makes for a bit of tension between them sometimes, but when it comes down to business they all have each others backs.
Of course with strong male characters they have to have some strong female love-interests! I love how strong Jenna is. She's independent and determined to care for her daughter and not rely on anyone else to help her.
As with all of Susan Sleeman's books there are spiritual lessons to be learned. I truly love that about all of her books. They are not preachy and yet all of her characters have some struggle with their faith that helps their character grow and mature.
Here is a favorite quote from Night Vision:
"We can't always figure out how or why God works," she said with conviction. "My pastor keeps telling me God doesn't give us what we can handle. He helps us handle what we're given."
The action and suspense throughout the book is exciting and keeps the reader turning the pages to the exciting conclusion.
In my book author Susan Sleeman is a must-read, and once again with the Nighthawk Security series she has shown her ability to write exciting stories with strong and likeable characters. Definitely looking forward to the next book and next Byrd to have his story told! -
Night Vision by Susan Sleeman is the second book in her Nighthawk Security series. Brendan Byrd stops a murder in the snow-covered woods of Oregon never dreaming how it would affect his life. This story has it all –a small child, Christmas, and nail-biting suspense. I really love the Byrd family. Their love and support for each other is a testament to their up-bringing. I’m always surprised that Ms. Sleeman can keep writing so many great stories that are all so different! She doesn’t disappoint with this one either. I couldn’t put the book down. The suspense was so intense with all the twists and turns that the story took; you never knew what was coming next. The ending was a total shock! I can’t wait for the next installment.
I received this e-book from the author for my honest review. -
This was a captivating romantic suspense around Christmas time.
What I love about this series is that it is about the Byrd family, mainly the brothers, and I enjoy how they tease and keep each other on their toes, but when it matters, they are there for each other and have each other’s back.
I enjoyed the characters of Jenna and how her daughter captivated the heart of every Byrd.
The suspense kept me guessing and I did not know who was after Jenna or why. The revelation was quite surprising. -

I LOVED Night Vision by Susan Sleeman. What a wild ride! The storyline is excellent, so much so I devoured this story in two days. It really is an un-put-downable read! The characters are awesome. I gravitated towards Brendan in the first book, Night Fall, and was super excited to get to read his story in this second book. He is a superb hero and a true modern-day knight in shining armor. Jenna, the heroine, is pretty amazing herself. She is strong, upright, and brave. I found myself relating to a lot of her emotional turmoil and spiritual issues. I loved the chemistry between Brendan and Jenna. Their relationship grew rather quickly, but it never felt fake or forced or too soon. In fact, they make a really great team. Jenna’s daughter, Karlie, is the cutest 4-year old perhaps ever written. She made my heart melt! And, the suspense in this novel is non-stop. Just when you think things are going to calm down for a second, “BAM,” something new and crazy is happening. It is great! This Nighthawk Security series is really spectacular!
In 2 Corinthians 10:5 Paul states, “take every thought captive to obey Christ.” And, in Philippians 4:8 he writes, “…whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” These are fantastic commands, and I wish I could say that I am successful at obeying them but I often struggle to do so. My brain is a gold-medal winner at going to extreme negatives in milliseconds. I spiral so fast it really can make one’s head spin. This causes me to have an intense battle with fear. I daily have to pray and study God’s Word and give God my fears, or I can get pretty sick to my stomach. When I feel a mental spiral (out of control) coming on, I tell myself, “Nicole, take your thoughts captive to God.” My FAVORITE aspect of Jenna’s character is her ability to take her thoughts captive. She finds herself in these horrific predicaments and naturally her thoughts spiral, but she stops them. She boldly says, “NO!” and then turns her thoughts to the positive. For me, it was simply outstanding to watch a character illustrate HOW to take thoughts captive and not let them spiral out of control. I know this sounds goofy cause Jenna is fictional, but I’ve never seen anyone actually do this. It was refreshing to see an aspect of my personality reflected in a really cool character, and it was helpful to me to see “take every thought captive” in action. What an excellent aspect to an already outstanding Romantic Suspense story.
Night Vision is a great read and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute. I can’t wait for book three, Night Hawk, to release in January. If you need a seriously good Romantic Suspense series to escape into right now, I highly recommend the Nighthawk Security series.
I purchased a copy of this novel in eBook form from Amazon.com on December 3, 2020, in order to review. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own. -
CHRISTMAS VACATION GONE HORRIBLY AWRY!
NIGHT VISION: (Nighthawk Security Book 2) by Author Susan Sleeman is the perfect example of a Christmas Vacation Gone Horribly Awry! Jenna Paine has not had an easy life. She did not have an easy childhood which caused her to make a poor decision when choosing a husband. That was a decision she quickly came to regret and even more so once their daughter was born. Jeanna won the Grand Prize in a Radio Station Contest and she and her four year old daughter will get to spend an all expense paid week at a Ski Resort.
Brendan Byrd, Former Army Delta Force and County Deputy, now a partner in NightHawk Security is spending the Christmas vacation at the same resort with his family. His large family made up of his parents, brothers, sister and their assorted spouses, betrothed and significant others. The whole, big clan! He happens to be outside when he hears a faint sound that sounds like a woman screaming! Having the heart of a protector, he immediately takes off running straight towards where he heard the scream. In other words, he is running towards the danger! He locates the cabin and manages to get an eye on the situation and it is not good! Jenna is tied up and being threatened within an inch of her life! Brendan realizes he must intervene immediately if he plans to safe the life of this mystery woman!
Brendan rescues Jenna only to discover she has a daughter, too. He immediately moves the two to his family’s cabin where his mother welcomes them in with open arms. The Byrds do everything to try to make the holidays seem normal and fun, particularly for Jenna’s daughter. Soon, it becomes apparent that whoever was after Jenna does not plan to stop until they finish the job! However, they have never met the tenacity of Brendan Byrd, the Byrd Family, NightHawk Security and the many talented people at work at the Veritas Center. When you pour all of those skill sets together, you know the criminal(s) do not stand a chance! Another cleverly woven whodunnit that will keep you reading until way late into the night!
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by the author and Edge of Your Seat Books, Inc. The opinions expressed here are completely my own and without influence. -
In the second of the “Nighthawk Security” series, “Night Vision", Susan Sleeman intrinsically weaves together mystery, and romance into a intriguing plot that opens when the vacation Jenna Paine won on a radio station is suddenly in peril after she’s attacked in the cottage where she and her daughter are staying. Screaming into the night after escaping from the intruder, they are rescued by Brendan Byrd, one of the owners of Nighthawk Security who’s staying with his family for the Christmas holidays. Former Delta Force and a county deputy he offers Jenna and her daughter Karlie not only a room at his parents winter cottage, but his protection as he and his brothers search for the identity of the attacker. Both haunted by the past and afraid of falling in love, they soon find their feelings for each other deepening as the danger mounts.
Set in a snowy vacation spot near Mt. Hood, intensity and suspense spark when Jenna’s attacked by a second man on a motorcycle and Brendan and his brothers tighten the web of security around her while looking for the identity of the attacker as well as his motive. Fast-paced, tension mounts as the mystery builds when Jenna’s cabin is ransacked and her brother is found half dead in the snow from a drug overdose.
Well-developed with a strong layer of faith as well as parental and family love emotional intensity escalates not only with the love that sparks between Jenna and Brendan, but as Karlie is swept up in the dynamics of a family who falls for this charming four-year-old who was rejected by her father after being diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis. Yet with every clue revealed the mystery deepens as the plot flows seamlessly to an exciting confrontation near the end.
Breathing life into this riveting plot are compelling characters like the cautious, determined, verbally abused and vulnerable Jenna Paine; the strong, intense, confident but generous and caring Brendan Byrd; and the sweet and bright four-year-old Karlie.
A page-turner from beginning to end as the brothers of Nighthawk Security continue to protect those in unspeakable danger, “Night Vision” is action-packed while promising a romance filled with love, hope and a faith that can move mountains. -
So often we think we’re all alone, and we’ll never get past the struggles we are going through.
This is what Jenna thinks. She’s struggling to make ends meet and provide for her daughter. She’s had a hard life and now it just seems to have gone from bad to VERY VERY bad. But God has just the right answer to her prayers, however, she’s having a hard time trusting in the one person He’s brought her way.
This is the second book in the Nighthawk Security series by Susan Sleeman and from the very beginning of the story, the reader is taken on a ride of suspense and mystery.
“His eyes locked on hers in a bone-chilling glare.”
WOW! What a line? There is so much in this book that will keep you trying to breathe, like snowstorms, life-taking threats, health issues, physical confrontations, and also swoon-worthy moments.
The Nighthawk Security team is a family of brothers who are ready to make the city of Portland, as well as the surrounding area, safe. They use their skills and give of their time and resources, to make this happen. I’ve enjoyed getting to know the whole Byrd family. Now, I can’t wait to see them all in the other books.
When reading this story I enjoyed being able to envision exactly where it’s all happening, because this author has set it in my home state. I know of many of the places she mentioned in this book and her descriptions are spot on.
I am loving reading Susan Sleeman's books!
This story not only has great action and suspense, but there was a bit of romance . . . well, maybe a little more than a bit! These characters also learned that it’s okay to rely on others and God because He’s there for us and wants our best.
I can't wait to dig deeper into this group of larger-than-life heroes!
If you love action, suspense, and intrigue, then I highly recommend you pick this series up and start reading it! However, I have to warn you, once you start reading, you’ll want to go back and read all this author’s other books!
I was given this book by the publisher which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own. -

In the second book of her clean six book Nighthawk Security Forces series, Susan Sleeman takes us on an action-packed adventure. Nighthawk Security Forces is an elite private protective and investigative agency started by five brothers, all retired law enforcement.
In this installment, we meet former Sheriffs deputy and member of Army Delta Force, Brendan Byrd as he interrupts a violent vacation home invasion. Jenna Paine had rented a cabin near Mt. Hood, in Oregon, where she and Karlie, her young daughter, could relax and celebrate a low-key Christmas.
So much for that plan. The front door was busted in, the man who terrorized them was on the loose, and she didn’t know if she could trust this second man who scared off her would-be murderer.
The warrior who helped her invites Jenna and her daughter Karlie to stay with his entire family until the threat is eliminated. The question becomes more complicated when they start to question which is more dangerous — the physical threat or the one to their hearts?
Book Quote: The snowmobile rumbled closer. One rider. Fit Jenna’s attacker. The man slowed in front of the cabin and hurled a brick with paper wrapped around it on the porch then roared off. Brendan read the computer generated message: “She can’t hide. Give her up or the next time it won’t just be a brick. The whole family will be sorry.”
There are plenty of layers to this book that will keep you entertained. Even though it touches on some dark themes, it is still a fairly light, enjoyable read.
Book Quote: “You really are a special man, Brendan Byrd, and I’m honored to know you.”
“Right back atcha on being special. Except you’re not a man. Not at all.” He leaned in closer, his intent clear.
She twined her arms around his neck, boldly deepening the kiss.
Susan Sleeman is excellent at intertwining the characters throughout her various series, so if you want to meet them earlier than this book, start with her Cold Harbor series. One of the nice things about her writing is even within a series, each book is a standalone. This writer never disappoints me. -
Night Vision is book two in Susan Sleeman‘s Nighthawk Security series. Brendan, the second eldest of the Byrd brothers, wants a quiet Christmas vacation with his family, but when he stumbles on a woman in distress, he cannot help but get involved. It’s one of the reasons why the brothers started their protection business in the first place.
Jenna Paine has no idea why a man tried to rob and then kill her, but she owes her life to this stranger who saved her. All she wants is a nice Christmas for her daughter Kylie, now she hates to intrude on the Byrd’s Christmas, but Brendan and the rest of his large family insist on her staying with them until the brothers track down who wants whatever-it-is from her. If only she knew, maybe the nightmare would end.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Sweet little Kylie, the gregarious Byrd family, the twists of the plot. Even when you’re left shaking your head at Brandon’s desire to help this stranger and how he lets his attraction to her override his common sense, you cant help thinking: of course he does, it’s Brandon. It fits so perfectly with his personality. A personality that off-sets the heavier side of Jenna’s past perfectly, too. (And in case you’re wondering, yes, Brandon is my favorite of the brothers so far.)
If you’re jumping into Susan Sleeman’s books, beginning with this series is just fine. Characters from past series are mentioned – and if you can, I highly recommend you go back and read them – but it won’t detract from this story here and now. The Byrds take up enough room all on their own. They are a large family with an even larger heart. And growing bigger with each and every book. Stay tuned: Clay’s story releases in January with Night Hawk!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with FTC guidelines. -
My review today is on the Romantic Suspense, Night Vision. This is book two in the series Nighthawk Security. Each time Susan sends me a book I wonder how she can top the last one but she has done it again. This book is amazing. It is well written, action packed, and fast paced. I know you are going to love it.
Widow Jenna Paine and her four year old daughter are on vacation. She has won a Christmas in the Mountains giveaway. It was a God send as there would be no Christmas for them this year. Her first night there she goes out to bring in wood when she is attacked. She fights back and is able to scream for help. A neighbor runs up to help them. He takes them to his cabin where his family is staying.
Brendan Byrd is staying at the cabin, a family tradition for Christmas. He hears a woman scream and rescues her. He can't leave her there for the man to return. He takes Jenna and Karlie back home with him. His family will keep them safe. Brendan is the second son of the Byrd family and second in command of their Nighthawk Security Agency. His four brothers agree to take on her case.
A journey through blizzard conditions to keep this little family alive. What are these men after? Is it just a random act or is it personal? Can Brendan find the answers before he loses his heart to these two? God has a plan for these three, a plan for a hope and a future. God has a plan for you too, give Him your heart, give Him control, and watch Him turn your life around. I know this is a time when many live in total fear but God can make a way when there is no way. He can't take control unless you give Him the authority. -
I have so enjoyed reading Susan Sleeman's series. Start from the beginning, the characters interact through each of these series and it's so enjoyable to see how their lives progress.
Brendan is the second of five brothers. While his family is staying at a cabin for Christmas, Brendan runs across a woman being attacked in her cabin and he comes to the rescue. The protector that he is he immediately offers the protection of his brothers and help in finding out why this happened. That a tiny little darling of a girl is part of the package - well, that makes it all the better.
Jenna has no idea what her attacker is looking for and all that she can think about is saving her daughter. When a handsome strong man comes to save her, for her daughter's sake she allows him to be her protector - but that's as far as it can go. She's attracted to him, but she's been hurt in the past and has no plans to let that happen again! Brendan is in the same boat and has no desire to start anything romantic with this woman - but they do have to spend time together...
This is a clean action packed story! -
Widow Jenna Paine and her young daughter, Karlie, hope to enjoy their Christmas vacation in a mountain cabin, but a surprise attack not only spoils their plans but threatens their lives. Fortunately, the Byrd family is vacationing nearby and offer aid. What could the scoundrel be looking for? The Byrds determine to help solve this crime, taking on much more than expected. They exchange their extended family getaway for an involved trail to get to the bottom of this crime spree. There are plenty of surprises, but this mystery is not as intense as most of the author’s novels are. Instead, we enjoy more heartwarming family scenes—some that even evoke tears. The suspense is present throughout, and the tension really picks up in the last quarter of the book. I like seeing the human side of the tough Byrd brothers and their coworkers. This second book in the series makes you long for more. I appreciate the Oregon (my home state) setting too. I received a copy from the author. All opinions are my own.

Night Vision by Susan Sleeman
Nighthawk Security Series Book Two
Brendan Byrd and his family spend some time before Christmas at a cabin on Mount Hood. This year, things are going to be a little different. Instead of time off from work, Brendan and his brothers have a job to do. A young woman at a nearby cabin is in trouble, and the Byrd men are protectors...whether it's a paying job or not.
Jenna Paine and her daughter have been struggling since her husband's death. Thankfully she won a contest to stay at a cabin for Christmas. It's her gift to Karlie since they can't afford much. Her stay ends up quite a bit different than she had imagined.
This series had incredible storylines and endearing characters. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

This is book two in the Nighthawk security series. However it is a stand alone book. Sleeman is one of my favorite authors. Her books are full of mystery, suspense, humor, family and romance. One thing I like about her books is they continue to bring people from previous books and the relationships develop, yet each is a stand alone. So if you just read one you can enjoy it and not feel lost.
We learn more about the handsome, Brendan Byrd of Nighthawk Security, in this book. When he comes to the rescue of Jenna and her four year old, Brendan and Jenna must do all they can to protect themselves and their hearts. This book is full of mystery, drama, family, healing and so much more. I look forward to reading more from the Byrd family. -
When a man breaks into the cabin Jenna and her daughter, Karlie are staying in for Christmas, Jenna a fears for her life and her daughters. She is able to get the door open and scream. Not sure if he heard a scream or not, Brendan listens, to find out if he will hear it again. When he does, he races down the deep snowy hill to the cabin. Brendan scared the man away and tells Jenna he is taking her and Karlie back to his family cabin to protect her. Brendan and his brothers run a security and investigation company. While Jenna stays with Brendan's family, while Brendan and his family search for the attacker and why she was attacked, she draws close to Brendan and Karlie comes to love him and his parents.

Night Vision, Book 2 in the Nighthawk Security series is one I look forward to reading. I fell in love with the brothers in Book 1, and now I can’t get enough. The action and suspense are always different and fresh with this author but I love even more how she integrates children into her books. Not all of her stories but enough to keep it natural and refreshing. To keep up to date with Blackwell Tactical and the team I met in the Truth Seekers series is an added bonus I love! Night Hawk can’t come soon enough!

This second book in the Nighthawk Security Series features the number 2 brother, Brendan Byrd. These brothers are all the very best as Jenna Paine finds out after Brendan rescues her from a potential killer at a vacation cabin at a ski resort. And now they have to all work together to keep her and her four year old daughter Karlie safe from whoever it is trying to get to them. Of course their feelings for each other kinda gets in the way sometimes. I enjoyed this book and appreciated the way the author worked into the story their faith and trust in God.
-
I have enjoyed this series of books. They can be read separately or out of order but for background information it makes more sense to read in order.
Jenna Paine is on a free vacation with her 4-year old daughter when someone breaks into the cabin and threatens her. She manages to get to the door and scream. Fortunately Brenden Byrd is hiking in the snow nearby and comes to her rescue. He and his brothers put Jenna and Karlie under their protection and try to figure out who and why someone wants to kill her and what they are looking for. Will they be able to figure it out?
