How To Be an Antiracist / This Book Is Anti-Racist / Born A Crime Stories from a South African Childhood Reviews
-
Where are you on the racist/anti racist spectrum? Are you evolving or stagnant in your understanding of this multidimensional subject? Kendi gives a lot to think about in his take on the subject. While an American perspective, it is relevant to all. A gréât and thoughtful read!

If you accept that most people are white suprematists, you will enjoy this book.

Very expensive toilet paper / fire starter

I found this book timely and necessary--especially given the series of obtuse reactions from multiple book club members of various races. The discomfort is the point. I feel it is an instructive text that benefits every person willing to exhibit curiosity about themselves and their own background, narratives, experiences, and beliefs. I particularly appreciated the way the author drew a through line all the way to the advent of the term "racism" in poetry about hunting, of all things. The conjoined twins of capitalism and racism was a metaphor I appreciated when tracking the root causes and historical motivations that underpin today's injustices.

This book has a lot of important things to say about racism and racism in America, but it's also a good manual for just growing as a person. Kendi is relentless about his own integrity, always interrogating his own self-delusions and prejudices. That's important for rooting out racist ideas, but ideas in general, really.

I heard Kendi’s book And Trevor Noah’s set on
audio book shortly after the George Floyd protests.
Props to my older daughter for researching structural racism, implicit bias, why athletes kneel, and the aggravation Black people feel against the broader culture, and introduucing these important concepts to our family ...
Along with the two above, I listened to White Fragility, which provides a solid triumvirate to understand the African-American experience.
Kendi provided poignant, historical anecdotes, providing cultural context, and ammunition for allies (like Asian-Americans) to become activists for their African-
American brethren, who have done the heavy lifting in human rights for the Marginalized and people of all color.
Noah is my favorite comedian, who can get away with so much because he is hilarious. An easy to binge, aautobiographical account of his life growing up in South Africa as a biracial person -
"White moderates" think we are neutral, just like those of us from the Midwest think we have no accent. But if you aren't actively trying to dismantle racist practices, you are upholding them. Great primer for learning to see the world differently.

I can't recommend this book enough.
-
This is more of a personal autobiography than a discourse on society, racism, or antiracism.

though i knew much of the subject matter of this book due to the nature of my degree, it was still amazing. kendi is an amazing author and i hope to read more of his work in the future.
