    Peter Brandvold – Lou Prophet Vol 1 – Reviewed 9/22/20 – Read 8/23-26/20

Bounty hunting takes you to places, sometimes to some that you don’t want to see, but heck it is part of the job!

Life as a bounty hunter is a lonely and dangerous occupation! To catch your prey, you sure do not want to stop till you get your man or men if that is the case. Lou Prophet has been shot at, and cursed at, but then the job is not done till you get them. Lou is about half a day behind the four men that robbed the Express Office at Three Forks. He knew that they would not be expecting anyone coming after them this quick. About 40 miles out, he told his horse, mean and ugly, darn if I do not smell smoke. Picketing his horse, he picked his way around till he had a view up above the grassy meadow where a sod and log cabin stood. A short distance away four horses were in the corral. Outside a man was splitting wood in the spring breeze. Prophet’s guess was this was just an outlaw hideout cabin now, at one time it must have been maybe a buffalo camp.

Well dern, how was he going to set this up to take down all four men. Of course, the posters all read dead or alive so that was not a problem, but he needed to do that and still not be smelling flowers above him. Knowing that this would not require his rifle he went back to his horse for his field glasses and a sawed-off double-barreled shotgun. Taking his time, he trekked around till he had good sight and checked out everything. The only way that he could figure to have a chance to take them all out, was to block the stove pipe and wait for them to exit the cabin. Being tickled with himself he set a stone over the stove pipe. Everything looked good till the sod shifted and started sinking below his feet!

    And now the story begins…

Lou Prophet Volume 1 includes – The Devil and Lou Prophet, Riding With the Devil’s Mistress, The Devil Gets His Due, Staring Down the Devil, and The Devil’s Lair.

What did I like? I think most women would fall in love with Lou Prophet, he is a big man with the looks and the general manners that all women appreciate. He works hard but then he plays just as hard. The profession that he chose takes him all over with lots of action and a ton of danger. His life might be hard, but he is not a hard man and that is what makes him unique. I admire his values, they were so important during this particular time in the west. There was that one step that you never cross, and Prophet knew that line and was determined to never walk over it.

What will you like? The action flies around like a bee trying to get out of a bonnet. Lou Prophet is a man’s man, and he does not take any crap from no one, but he gets the job done, and then he is ready to party. The characters are all tough and rowdy but unique. It is the west and outlaws are just that way. Peter’s books are all exceptional in their research, the descriptions and details will take you on this dangerous life of the lawless, but along the way, you will be able to see the landscape with your mind’s eye. The storyline is beautifully written and edited and will certainly keep you glued till the last page turns. An exceptional volume to be added to your Western Library. This is definitely an excellent read!

I have read some of the Peter Brandvold books before, and have always enjoyed the stories -- but there are some parts that are just a little too graphic for my taste. I recognize that my taste is not the same as others, so I will not elaborate any further than that. There are really no good guys in this story (I don't think Lou Prophet would qualify as good), there are just some that are not as bad as the bad guys. The bad guys are really bad, and some are worse than others. If you enjoy the story, and can tolerate the ancillary episodes - you will like these books.

    A rollicking adventure

Lou Prophet can get into and out of more trouble than three ordinary heroes.
Even with horses tied tail to tail ( snicker) you're sure to have fun reading Mr. Branvolt's stories.
