The Life We Have is a can’t put down read! I absolutely adored Greyson and Zach together. They’re personalities were perfectly matched. I loved the beginning, middle and ending, and I can’t wait to read more from this author.

  • Bookgasms Book Blog

After I finished reading The Life We Have around 2 a.m. this morning, I laid awake for quite some time because neither my heart nor my head wanted to leave a “little shit-hole town called, uh . . . Hog Hill” and Greyson and Zach.

I loved Greyson’s story of self-discovery—him finding his way in the world and his place in it and within his family. He’s not had an easy time of it at all. Not growing up with a whirling dervish of a mother and finding out only after her death his father is none other than Sebastian Moore, a man he idolized growing up for his drumming skills.

Now six years later, Greyson’s trying to make it in the music business. He’s bound and determined to succeed without his father’s help or inside track. He wants to succeed on his own merit.

When he lands a gig as the drummer in a metal band, Greyson can’t wait to hit the road, to live the life of a musician and experience all the highs and lows his dad did. But things are quite a bit different from the "family" feeling Greyson always felt when he traveled with his dad and his band. Things are quite so friendly in this new gig. Pretty much the only happy part with the band is the budding friendship Greyson has found with Zach, his drum tech.

Until their friendship moves onto something more. Something more like romance and love. Something Greyson never thought he’d find at this point in his life. Especially since he’s never told anyone that he’s gay.

So now Greyson’s path into adulthood includes not only finding his place in the music industry, but also navigating a world where there’s intolerance and homophobia. And to top it all off there’s his family to deal with too. There’s a worry that once his dad and his aunt find out he’s gay, that they’re going to be disappointed in the man he’s become.

“. . . but in that moment, I felt that, in our own right, we’re all phoenixes. We all rise from the ashes of our lies, our secrets, our destinies, and there, we find freedom.”

I loved how The Life We Have unfolded. Loved the romance between Greyson and Zach, and that the heart of if was a true friendship first and foremost. Loved that they connected immediately, that they trusted both their hearts and their heads. And I loved that any issues that came up between them were due to outside influences—especially when they were navigating through family troubles and history.

And I loved Greyson and Sebastian’s relationship too. Their powerful father-son bond that though it bent a bit, didn’t break. And the same with Zach and his own father, Vincent. They’d struggled to understand each other, to trust and move beyond past issues. But they never really gave up trying, and they always loved each other even when they really didn’t like each other. ~ Missy, 5 stars

    ***

    Oh. my. gosh.

Where do I even start? I don't even know a way to express to you all the things this book just did to my heart. It fluttered. It sped out of control. It bruised. It ached. It swooned. It did all the things, and it's so happy right now even as it grieves the ending of this amazing story.

    It was so good.

No, you don't understand. It was SO good.

I've had a complicated relationship with M/M stories over the last couple of years. It is so important to me that the emotional component of the story take precedence over the sexual attraction component of the story and, Lord almighty, Kelsey Kingsley delivered. The balance between heartfelt emotion and sizzling physical chemistry was my kind of perfection. I was wholly attached to these two completely lovable characters and I cheered them on the entire way. I adored them.

It maybe helped that I already loved Greyson a little bit from The Life We Wanted. I went into this book already attached to him and his complicated emotions. But honestly, if I were forced to choose a favorite here, I think it would have to be Zach. Because - oof.

    That. Guy.

    Strong. Steadfast. Sensitive. Sexy.

I loved how his wisdom and life experience anchored Greyson, but I also loved how he didn't make a big deal out of it or let their age gap complicate things. He was perfection. I can't tell you how many times I spent with my hand over my heart reading his thoughts and dialogue. These two together were everything my heart could have asked for, and I was over the moon crazy about their romance.

That said, if you are familiar with Kelsey Kingsley's work, you'll know it's always about more than the romance. There's a bigger love story - or maybe a couple other love stories - at play here and it wrecked my heart. The family dynamic - both for Greyson and for Zach - was heart-wrenching and beautiful at the same time. The depth that this added to the story just took it to the next level for me. These relationships were so important, and the way they were handled with such raw honesty and emotion. I mean, it was just fantastic. It hurt sometimes. But it was so worth it.

Honestly, I didn't want this story to end. In fact, I hope that maybe it hasn't. I can't get enough of these characters, the way they are so smartly and relatably written, or the storytelling that enchants, compels, and leaves me feeling so freaking satisfied in the end. Every. Single. Time. This should be a no brainer y'all. Read this book! ~ Shelly, 5 Stars

All I can say about this book is that is an amazing love story. I'm on my second book by this author and I will read more. Kelsey Kingsley has an amazing gift to deliver a good story, to balance everything (emotion, feelings, chemistry). She just gives the right amount of what is important when two people love each other with good, bad or whatever life can throw their way.

    We all remember Greyson. In
The Life We Wanted he found out that famous drummer Sebastian Moore is his dad. And then the aunt who was raising Greyson after his mom died went and fell in love with his dad and now they're a happy family. That was six years ago. But Greyson is not really happy. He still hasn't gotten a job as a drummer and he still hasn't told anyone that he's gay. He doesn't want to disappoint his family.

But now he finally got a job to go on tour with this metal band. And that's where he meets him....

Zach. He's 30. His dad runs a pizza place in Manhattan - where Zach works between jobs as a drum tech.

But now he'll be on tour for six weeks. With this hot new guy.

Let the fun and not so fun times begin ...

    I just love #RockstarRomances!

And we're on tour a lot, so it's really rockstary ... but we don't like the band at all. They're so mean to our sweet Greyson!

And poor Greyson already has problems with being who he is and how to tell his dad and how to not screw up this new thing with Zach.

And Zach. He's not really sure that he can go through another bad heartbreak again. Plus Greyson is nine years younger than him. Zach doesn't want to be a secret.

Ugh those two. So many problems between them. So much depression and fear. I just hated that for them. People shouldn't be afraid to tell their dad about their boyfriend!

This was a great love story. But it was so much more than just two guys falling for each other. There's so much to overcome for both of them. All very heartbreaking and sad and frustrating.

But this is the life they have - so they have to make the best of it - for themselves and for the reader!

I really loved reading it. It was very sweet and sad and romantic and rockstary and full of music and good food and family!

It was a bit too melancholy and frustrating for my tastes - especially the first half, but I really loved Greyson and Zach and of course Seb and Tabs and Zach's family!

THE LIFE WE HAVE was an adorable, frustrating & rock-stary coming-of-agey love story.

I am such a fan of Kelsey Kingsley. She never fails to make me feel every emotion thorough her words. I always look forward to reading her books and this book is no exception. And the fact that this book is about Sebastian Moore’s son made me so eager to read it. The Life We Have is so beautifully written and I absolutely loved it.

I loved how The Life We Have unfolded. I loved the immediate connection and the eventual romance between Greyson and Zach, and at the heart of if was a true friendship first and foremost. I am just in awe of this book. I love Greyson and Zach and their love together. It was absolutely beautiful. There are so many wonderful themes packed into this story. Part coming of age and a journey of self-discovery, and part overcoming difficulties and unconditional acceptance. All of which were exquisitely handled and with skill and grace. And I especially loved Greyson and Sebastian’s relationship too. Their powerful father-son bond was so touching and the dynamic between the two reaches a deeper level.

Rich in deep emotion, The Life We Have is another book that evokes so many raw feelings and emotions that you can’t help but be apart of the story. It is an exceptional and heartfelt story. I was already fully invested in these characters from Kelsey’s previous books and was so thrilled for Greyson to get his story told and to get his chance at love. I was totally captivated throughout this addictive page turner, and I highly recommend this talented authors’ work for every reader.

    * I removed my original, partial review to add an updated one that reflects my true feelings about this amazing book. The other one didn't do it justice!*

    Here's the new one!

    *-------------------*

I FLOVED the idea of this much anticipated story since I first became aware of its exsistance months ago! If you adored one of my special, gorgeous, laugh out loud funny, wildman drummer crushes from The Life We Wanted (a book I could read again and again), Sebastian Moore, the way I did, then you have to be dying to read all about the son he never knew he had, through a crazy twist of fate, until Greyson was 16 years old. This is Grey's angsty, angry trip from mid-teen to early 20's, a coming of age story and it's one that's NOT to be missed.

Grey is afraid to reach for what he really wants but after enjoying a special friendship and much needed commardarie while touring as a drummer (what else!) with his first band, the man of his dreams is right there in front of him, working beside him every day. Zach is a bit older, maybe wiser, knows he needs to wait for Grey to hopefully feel the same way he does. He needs to be comfortable enough to embrace his decision, either way, being the person he wants to be and reaching for his own happiness. Wow, this book touched my heart for so many reasons.

The cameos of people who loved Greyson all along and pulled for him was a moment for a few tears. So good to see these characters in another book again. Sebastian being himself is always a wild card, but who could resist him!

This book can stand alone but can also be part of a larger world. Whether or not you've read and loved this whole, beautiful rockstar series Kelsey Kingsley has created for our immense enjoyment or, if you haven't had the pleasure yet, what better time than now, when the world is so crazy, to dig right in and get lost for a while, binging the hell out of her amazing and unforgettable stories. Start with Daisies and Devin and keep on going!

Kelsey Kingley is just so darn talented, I can never get enough of her! Maybe you'll see what I mean!

I am a happy recipient of an early version of this book in exchange for an honest review.

If you read The Life We Wanted you know Greyson our main character is the son of Sebastian Moore. The Life We Have is set 6 years later and Greyson is now an aspiring drummer that has dropped out of college at 20 to pursue his dream. Greyson is a typical 20 year old. Private about his personal life and dreams for the future. He doesn't want to disappoint anyone but in doing that he is keeping a lot inside and it's eating at him. When he achieves his first professional gig he's equally excited and terrified. He meets Zach. Zach is over 10 years older and wiser due to life lessons learned. It has taken Zach a long time to get on the right path for his life but he knows who he is and what he hopes for out of his life. These two guys have a lot of common interests and isn't that how any relationship begins? The mother in me loves both of these characters. From the young man just entering adulthood to the man who made a lot of mistakes but is doing his best to live his best life. This is so much more than a story about drummers who like video gaming. It's about finding who you are, accepting nothing less than what you deserve and mostly giving love to those around you. Love is free and we all have an endless supply to give.

The Life We Have hit a lot of the right spots. I loved the two MC's, Greyson and Zach, and their story. My only thing was that I wanted more from the epilogue but I'm sure a lot of people enjoyed it the way it was.

This is Greyson's story & a continuation from "The Life We Wanted" & boy, Kelsey Kingsley hit it out of the park once again. Greyson is now twenty, still living at home with his aunt & father but grappling with anger issues, self doubt & a personal inner struggle. Rejected & reeling after many failed auditions as a drummer, he is finally hired for a six week tour with a band which takes him on a journey of self discovery, love & independence as well as an up close & personal view of the rock & roll lifestyle, it's callous people & tour bus temptations. Along the way he also meets Zach, drum tech, former addict & one who will have a major impact on this tour & his future.
The best part of the story for me was not just the budding connection between Greyson & Zach, & this played a major role in the plotline, but also the deep, strenuous & loving relationship between Greyson & his dad, Sebastian. Their bond is still relatively new, the father/son love is strong, but it is tested & although Sebastian comes across as the perfect cool dad, at one point he walks away from his son, causing what could result in irreputable damage.
Greyson is still my favorite character in this series, so thoughtful, so caring & oh so very sensitive. There are many unhappy moments & when he cried, I cried. What we finally see though is his acceptance of who he is, his inner struggles resolved & the unstoppable love & adoration from his father & extended family. A beautifully written story by an author who has a permanent spot on my go to list.

I've read books by this author before and she really knows how to make you feel emotions thorough the words she writes. I always look forward to reading her books and this book is beautifully written and I absolutely loved it.

Greyson has had thing's very tough, however after the death of his mum he goes to stay with his father and Greyson's life had completely flipped in a very short space of time and now he also has big dreams like his father. He likes to keep himself to himself and the only thing is, is that Greyson has a secret - yep he's gay and desperately doesn't want his father knowing.
Zach is older than Greyson and has lived more and he has also been on a journey in his life and it took him to get to the place he is no happy.
    (NO SPOILERS).

This book has all your emotions all over the place, this book is about discovery, hope, strength and acceptance and alot of love.
This author has written the characters in this book so good it's as if you actually know them for real and I really feel for them especially Greyson. Greyson wants to keep his father happy and he doesn't want to disappoint him.
This book is a very powerful emotional journey and will have the readers desperate to find out more and you won't be able to put it down.

Thank you to the author and publishers for allowing me to read an early copy of this book.

ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.

This book is expected to be released 10th April 2020.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this story. The Life We Have is kind of a growing up story for Greyson, a character in previous Kelsey Kingsley book that I haven't read (but I will be soon!). He was living a quiet life with big secrets and trying to figure out who he is in his early 20's. Zach is in his early 30's and has had a life full of heartache and learned lessons. Together they both gave this story the depth and perspective that made it so real. Greyson is like every 20 year old I know, and Zach is the more cautious 30 year old we learn to be when we lose our naitivity. Things developed in a natural way, and above all else the characters showed how to support your partner in all things, flaws and all. All of the characters had some big flaws that the people who loved them were able to forgive and look past; no one was 'perfect'. The dialogue in this book was as realistic as any in books I have read--I could hear their conversations as I read them. There was part towards the end with Greyson's dad that I had a hard time looking past, and it seemed out of character, but it also gave the story more unpredictablity.
Overall, I can't say enough how much I loved this story, and I am excited to hopefully find a new author here with more books I will love!

    Such a good one

This was a MM Rock star romance with a HEA.

Oh was this a good book, such an enjoyable one! Suitable for a new confort read for my rereads shelf and just how often does one find a new one like that! Not too many times.

This falls into those sweet ones with all the feels with light angst that mainly concentrates on coming out of the closet to your family. It's what I'd call a real Romance, too. A real story, a real book. I really liked and enjoyed the story and the writing, and I've nothing but good to say about this one in general. I've got definite feels for checking out what else for me there is by this author.

I rec this for those who like all that and I could easily rec it for first MM reads, too, for those wanting to give MM a try.

    Trigger warning: substance abuse.

  • Kim Stone

New to me author. This is a mm contemporary romance book with main characters Greyson and Zach. Grayson is the son of a famous drummer he met after his single mother passed away at aged 15. Zach is a reformed drug and alcohol addict. This book is told from duel POV. There is 10 years difference between 21 year old Grey and 30 yo Zach. Both have been through tough times and find happiness with each other. Great story that I enjoy reading.

  • christyheartsbooks

Greyson was raised by his single mom until she tragically died when he was 15. He was then raised by his Aunt Tabs. Tabs found Greyson's dad and brought him into Greyson's life. His father is none other than Sebastian Moore, famous drummer and one of Greyson's idols. Though they have a rocky start they end up having a pretty great relationship except for the fact that Greyson is afraid to tell his dad and aunt that he is gay. While on tour for the very first time with his band he meets Zach, his drummer technician. Zach takes him under his wing and guides him through tour life and life in general. Turns out the drummer tech that is 10 years older than Greyson is exactly what he needed to feel complete.

I am having a hard time formulating a review for this one. I am in absolute awe of this book. I love Greyson and Zach and their love. It was absolutely beautiful. Greyson's struggle with telling his family about his sexuality was heartbreakingly real. I felt his struggle and his desire to just want to be accepted and loved but the absolute fear of that not happening if he reveals who he is. My heart ached for him. And then there is Zach who has his own issues but since he is older he has already worked them out and he is there for Greyson at a time when he needs him most. His heart and loyalty are extraordinary. Both of these men come from different worlds with different struggles but are both exactly what the other needed to find their true happiness. They are both there to help, guide, support and love one another. I said it before but I will say it again, I am in awe of this book and I don’t have the right words to portray just how amazing their love is. By far my favorite book by Kelsey and hands down my favorite read of the year so far.

  • Brittany

The Life We Have is my second read by Kelsey Kingsley. If you remember, she's my first, and right now only, 6 star read of the year, with Warrior Blue, which released in January. I was excited to get my hands on this new book. The Life We Have revolves around Grey, the son of a famous drummer trying to pave his own way, and his drum tech, ten years his senior, Zach. Two things I love in a book, M/M, and an age gap? Perfect!

In the beginning, the chemistry between the two hero's is slow to click, but I am finding this is what I enjoy most about Kelsey's writing. The story stands on its own, so there's no need to crash these two people into bed instantly. You get to witness the two of them falling for each other. Grey, though, man, he just broke my heart. He was searching for himself, not wanting to be his father's shadow but also needing that support from his father as well. He's relatable because he's trying to find his way on his own for the first time, and it brought back a similar feeling when I was off to college and leaving home for the first time. Zach, on the other hand, being older, is more established. Though he does have a whole barrel full of demons in his past, I loved his old soul and how he settles Grey. It is obvious how the two men complement one another.

Through the romance, there are a lot of tough situations, hard emotions, and feels for days. When I finished, I just sat and hugged my kindle to my chest, as crazy as that sounds, and smiled. I had a feeling of contentment when it was over, and I knew Kelsey had gotten Grey and Zach's story perfect.

  • Sarah

K Kingsley not only knows how to write a fantastic rockstar romance, but she will also blow you away with her swoony MM romance writing skills! I absolutely loved this book about Greyson, a struggling drummer living in the shadows of his famous rockstar dad, Sebastian (SWOOOON!); and his love interest, Zach, an older recovering-addict, who is fiercely loyal to his family.

This book will hit you in all the feels...you will feel like you are living on a rock band tour bus, experiencing all of the highs and lows of a struggling musician, as well as facing the uncertainty of acceptance and love from those around you. The author broached the subject of "coming out" so perfectly. Greyson was scared, yet confident in who he was. His dad and aunt were loving and accepting parents, yet we still didn't know what their reaction to Greyson's news would be. Zach was the perfect buffer - he was older, experienced, compassionate and loyal. Both of their sensitive sides made me swoon; and at the same time, their banter and gruff male sides set off butterflies in my stomach.

Their story focuses on family and the importance of their roles in one's life, whether it is small or large, the bonds are always there. And the cameos of side characters who we have come to love from this author made me stand up and scream! These characters are all like family, and the connections and loyalty that they have to each other was a standout in this book!

If you love a good swoony rockstar MM romance, then this book is a MUST READ!!! Well done once again K Kingsley!!

I am not a reader of MM stories normally. Was worried about reading this, but, wow. What a story! Loved it. Absolutely one of Kelsey Kingsley’s finest books. Since I finished this, I have gone back to re-read Sebastian’s book. This author never disappoints, writes an amazing story and I can’t get enough. Such talent! Definitely recommend this.

Clever idea, but WAY too much angst.

If you enjoy reading about rock bands, angst, dysfunctional families, angst, self-pity, angst, drugs and alcohol, angst, two decent main characters, angst - and, oh, did I mention angst? - then Kelsey Kingsley's The Life We Have is definitely the book for you.

  • Bree

I'll be honest, I don't read m/m romance. But I love Kelsey and all of her books, plus I've read all of the other books about Grayson's dad and his band, so I felt compelled to read this one. You don't have to have read any of those books (but you should, because they're amazing!) because this one truly stands on its own. I adored Grayson, his awareness of his weaknesses and his struggles to overcome them, and I truly appreciate the times when his supports step in to help and the times when Gray has to step up and handle things on his own. But my absolute favorite is Zach. He knows who he is, he owns who he is, and he is not afraid to put himself out there for the one he loves. This story has struggles, heartache and weakness. But it is full of overcoming those challenges, strength they didn't know they had, and above all, love. Love that doesn't waver, even when things are tough. These guys are committed to each other no matter what stands in their way. Here is my favorite quote: "No sense in worrying about how to impress the people that don't matter. Not when you can be moving on to find the people who don't need impressing." We all need to live by this motto! If you've read Sebastian's book, you will absolutely adore the way he shows up in this one. What an amazing father, not a perfect one but one who admits his mistakes and loves unconditionally. Well done, Kelsey. Thanks for taking me outside of my comfort zone and wrapping me in snuggly comfort just the same!

  • BookAddict

Admittedly, I’m not big on MM romances, but this gifted wordsmith is one I’ve learned to trust with my romantic heart. And Sebastian Moore's son, all grown up? That was something I absolutely could not pass up, and this story really delivers.

Greyson is just turning twenty one and he takes a job as a drummer for a second-rate band's next tour. He has nothing in common with his three band members who occupy their free time with drinking and drugs. None of this bodes well for Greyson's challenges in controlling his anger, but he finds a friend in Zach, his drum tech, a man ten years his senior.

There are so many wonderful themes packed into this story. Part coming of age and finding one's true self, and part overcoming difficulties and unconditional acceptance. All of it handled beautifully, as is the relationship between Greyson and Zach, which only increases my respect for their story's creator. Intimate details are just beyond PG and serve to highlight the emotional component of the relationship, and every part is authentic and exquisite.

Rich with deep emotion and full of food for thought, this is an exceptional, heartfelt story that you won’t want to pass up. If this might be your first foray into the MM romance genre, you can read this one with confidence, knowing that it does not disappoint.

Another gorgeously written bit of wonder by Kelsey Kingsley.

    What I loved
    1. A realistic view of being young. Sos sure yet unsure, angry and guilty over it, wanting to be close to family yet finding your own path, owning your stuff.

    2. An honest portrayal of homophobia, drug use and it's many consequences, how difficult forgiveness can be, and real love in all its forms.

    3. Author's writing that appear deceptively simple and clear, but hold so much emotion and depth.

    4. Revisiting some of my favorite characters from previous books, especially Sebastian.

    5. A realistic HEA that makes total sense for Grey and Zach.

    6. Sweetness amongst the pain.

    What I didn't love

    1. I just wanted this book to be longer, and I hope we get Vinnie's story soon. I want to stay in this world.

As usual, Kingsley writes with a brilliant balance of serious content and smooshy goodness. Releasing a book that hits on shame, homophobia, self-worth, reckoning with our pasts, and drug use during a pandemic could be difficult. This book is exactly what I needed during my time at home. It's so full of hope and acceptance, and I cannot recommend it enough.

    5* True Love Stars

I was lucky to win a copy of this fantastic book from the author and was beyond excited as I love Kelsey’s writing style and stories, she brings us.

Greyson who is the son of a famous drummer meets Zach, when he joins a band as their new drummer, and they go on tour. Zach is his drum tech and they become fast friends having more in common than they both know, despite Zach being 10 years older than Greyson. I loved how caring Zach was in protecting and looking after Greyson whilst on tour while they were surrounded by all the drinking, drugs and partying. It felt so real reading about what the rest of the band members got up to.

It was beautiful to read the journey of love between Greyson and Zach and the obstacles both of them had to overcome to enable them to move forward and be together.

This was a heartfelt and emotional story which will stay with you for a long time. I absolutely loved their story.

Writing style not my cup of tea. Something didn't connect for me but I can't quite put a finger on it.

Also. Not a standalone, even tho listed as one. Mega pet-peeve of mine. Missing all the backstory the previous book provided. Info-dump of previous events yet the confusion of being dropping in the middle of a story.

The MC's attitude would have been easier to swallow had I known it was a sequel. More empathy instead of finding him somewhat insufferable and acting more like a 12 yo boy, not a 21 yo.

Added with the fact that the couple had a 10 year age gap, his immaturity widened an already insurmountable gap for their ages & stations in life. 40 vs 30, no big deal. A childish 20 vs grown man of 30+, it felt more parent/child

Read the first book before this one. I didn't know this wasn't a standalone, now it's too late for me to go back & move forward.

  • ROBIN RUIZ

This is Greysons story. We first meet him in the book The Life We Wanted! In that book Greyson meets his dad, rock star and legend Sebastian Moore!
But.. this is Greysons story ... at the age of 21 he gets to tour with an up and coming rock band as their drummer , it is there he meets Zach
Zach, older, so sure of himself and what he wants from life.
This is a story of confidence, love, acceptance and finding your way.
Written only as Kelsey Kingsley could write, with love radiating through every page.
