Everlasting: A Short Story Collection Reviews
-
This collection features three short stories and although the cover led me to believe they would all fit into the fantasy genre, that wasn't the case. The first (and longest) story was fantasy though and it was my favorite. I felt like there was good character development (particularly of the villain).
The second story felt more contemporary to me while the third and final story touched on fantasy again. All three were enjoyable. The book itself is a short, quick read and is very well edited. The writing was great and held my interest.
I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys short stories. Although like I said, don't go into this expecting all fantasy reads. These stories cross genres, which I personally enjoyed.
I look forward to reading more by this author! -
I really enjoyed this collection of three short stories. Being a lover of fairy tales, I especially devoured ONE FOR SORROW, TWO FOR JOY, the first and longest story, which featured a classic fairy tale where sisters Holly and Daisy are cast against a dark Queen and become twisted up in goblin markets and cursed fruit. Lovely, lyrical descriptions as the sisters try to save one another one another.
THE PARK is a contemporary short story that features two girls, Rebecca and Sam, and a short encounter at the park.
THE PERFORMANCE was a cute short story told from the POV of a ballerina music box observing all its children as they grow up.

To be completely honest, I picked up this collection mostly because of the cover, I mean - come on - it’s gorgeous! But I think some of my dissatisfaction with this book was that the cover was a bit misleading.
The first short story was very good. It was an interesting fairytale featuring Queen Mab and a pair of sisters who were unaware of the fact that they had caught her attention and ire. I enjoyed it overall although at times it felt a bit unoriginal.
But the other two short stories didn’t work at all for me. One, they weren’t fantasy based. They didn’t seem to have any mystical qualities at all actually. Not only that they were very short in comparison to the first story and it almost felt like they were thrown in as an afterthought.
Although the writing itself was decent, I personally didn’t like the way this book was set up and I probably would have included only the first story in it and put the other two in a different collection. -
Well-written!
The stories give, what I felt to be, originality at times, and then other times gave a new and interesting treatment to older, time-honored tales. A delightful blend!
I'm not typically a short story reader, but I enjoyed this and I felt the author did a good job with crafting complete and satisfying stories, which is quite a feat, in my opinion! Writing good short stories is a challenge!
I recommend! -
I saw so many of my writer friends talking about this book and I’m glad I decided to check it out. Short stories aren’t usually my cup of tea but I was glad to discover this book to be the exception.
There’s three stories here and the first one is the longest and also my favorite, being a fantasy nut. But the other two are equally enjoyable. I really appreciate the emphasis on relationships in each of these stories and in concepts like hope. Very much felt and appreciated.
If I had any criticism, it would be that the last two stories being significantly shorter in comparison to the first felt a little odd. If there’s been a few more stories of varied length to balance it out, I wouldn’t have noticed so much. It almost feels like the first could have been a novella on its own. But this is a small nitpick.
Overall, very much enjoyed these stories and it’s definitely a recommended read if you enjoy focus on concepts like hope, friendship and love. -
A moving short story collection laced with whimsy and dark realism
Everlasting is a touching collection of three short stories about love and loss. Themes of innocence, growth and a melancholic longing for the past resonate throughout each story. Kimmerly paints a poignant picture of the joys of childhood and the perils of adulthood while tugging at the reader’s heartstrings.
“One for Sorrow, Two for Joy” has all the trappings of a classic fairytale. Clever and fantastical, this one is playful yet foreboding. “The Park” is a moving tale of heartbreak, exposing the bittersweet nature of viewing the world through a child’s eyes once jaded by the trials of life. “The Performance” is the shortest of the three stories, but it is by far my favorite. Heart-wrenching and evocative, I felt emotions well up from my own childhood as I read this brief yet effective piece. It reminded me of books my mother read to me about growing up and accepting the painful changes and separations that are a necessary part of the process.
As a huge fan of short stories in general, I was excited to sink my teeth into this collection. I was not disappointed. Kimmerly laces each with a touch of whimsy while giving us a stroke of dark realism throughout. If you love fantasy and don’t mind a good cry while reading, I highly recommend Everlasting.

I was familiar with the author's writing and had read THE PERFORMANCE previously, so I grabbed this collection based on the strength of her writing.
ONE FOR SORROW, TWO FOR JOY is a classic fairy tale featuring two sisters and a wicked witch. But it is also a story of love between two sisters. Both entertaining and heartfelt.
THE PARK is a chance meeting of a teen and a young girl which forces the teen to examine her life.
THE PERFORMANCE is a creative, delightful story about children growing up told from the perspective of a music box.
The three stories have little in common other than female characters, but they are all strong stories in their own way, and worth reading. -
There is this beautifully haunted feeling and nostalgia coming off when you read Christy's work. It brings out the warmth of love and memories that grew up with you, but it can also put words on the feeling of having a hole in your soul and having to figure out how to live with it. I do not regret picking up this book, being drawn to it, my soul somehow calling out to it, and I'm so happy. I loved it.

Very compelling
Christy's writing style made it easy to get engrossed in her tales. One for sorrow, two for joy was very moving. The Park was touching and The Performance was provoking in an out-of-the-box way.
