    John Legg - Mountain Country Trilogy – Reviewed 8/20/19 – Read 8/14-15/20

The trapping life of 3 men, their start, their friendship, and their adventures!

Ezra Early understood from a young age that he wanted to explore the wilderness in the west. He looked forward to the life of trapping even though he knew it would be harsh, he also knew that it would be full of adventures. The mountain man’s life would be trapping during the winter, all the while trying to stay alive in the harsh environment of the mountains. In addition to avoiding every Indian for miles around knowing that they wanted your belongings but most of all your scalp. Then if you survived the winter, you looked forward to Spring, the time to take your pelts to town, and of course, you can then enjoy doing the things you cannot do in the mountains, drinking, meeting up with friends, and especially the beautiful young senoritas. The West and the Rocky Mountains was still the place for him to be.

On his return to Taos after a visit back east, Ezra had missed the last caravan leaving Independence on the Santa Fe Trail. Not wanting to wait around for the next one, he and his big well-built Appaloosa took off on their own. He knew that traveling alone and having a large and beautiful Appaloosa would make him a target for any Indian in the area. He comes upon a camp that had the remains of four bodies, sadly he knew that one had been mutilated, assaulted, and partially skinned by white men. As he continued, he spotted a small group of warriors ahead of him. It looked like they had a captive and were taking out their pleasures on it. Early talked it over with his Appaloosa and decided that he would help the captive. He rode in with his guns a blazing, taking down one of them, the rest mounted and took off. Looking down he took his first look at the man the Commanches had captured.

    And now the story begins…

What did I like? This trilogy is about three men, their different lives, their incredible friendship, and their amazing adventures. Each man is so different and yet the three are completely compatible as companions. It tells about their beginnings as trappers, their summer living in the town of Taos, and then back to the trapping life with their Indian wives. I was amazed at the lifestyles, the descriptions of the areas where they trapped, the differences in the men, and their individual adventures. Having grown up in New Mexico, I am certainly familiar with Taos and the author did not disappoint me with his descriptions. Right on, John!

What will you like? Astonishing action, mind-blowing characters, shocking and amazing storyline. John takes you from the twenty-first century and drops you back in the eighteenth with accurate descriptions and details. The history will be surprising and mindboggling, to say the least. Those details will have you feeling the cold of the snow, the sound of the bullets, the swish of the tomahawk, and the taste of the whiskey. Very descriptive actions while they whoop it up in the summer in the Spanish town of Taos. The beautiful senoritas and all the traditional Spanish celebrations. Each book will take you right into the life of each of the men, detailing the most exciting time of their adventures and the life of the mountain trappers. Excellent read and will be another great addition to your western library.

    Great read

Great characters, excellent story . My only dislike is the constant cussing - using the G word. Not necessary to the story.
