Lots of Steps Shown to Draw Great Dragons
I have reviewed a fair number of how-to-draw books for kids. I often find that they show too few steps, requiring the child to fill in (and erase) a lot between steps. This is the first book I’ve seen that takes the completely opposite tack. The author breaks each dinosaur head or full dinosaur down into at least 30-something steps; one dragon has over 80! In each step, only a small curve, line, or squiggle is added. I actually think that some steps could have been combined, as not much is added between them. Because some of these dragons are complex, I found it hard sometimes to see precisely what to add in some of the later steps. The author does use slight variations of color to show what to add in each step, with black showing what was previously drawn and a medium gray showing what to add. To my eye, the distinction wasn't always well seen. The book is broadly divided into three types of dinosaurs: easy, normal, and hard. The easy ones are just dragon heads and necks; surprisingly, the first one has 53 steps! There are just a few “normal” ones; these are full dragons that don't have as much detail as the hard level. I don't consider myself terribly artistic, but with the detailed step-by-step instructions for these, I have no doubt I could do them all successfully. This book is perfect for a child (or adult) who wants to draw impressive-looking dragons with easy step-by-step instructions.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
