And now?
Now, he’s making me pay.

It’s time for you to pay the price.

Stand-alone Bully Romance with ties to The Four series!

The following ratings are out of 5:
    Romance: ❤️💙💜💛💚
    Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
    Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📔📙
    World building: 🌎🌏🌍🌎
    Character development: 👤👤👤👤

    The setting: Alstone High School.

The Hero(s): Carter Blackthorne – Football player and self proclaimed King of the school along with his friends Kian and Xavier. Carter is an alpha male with all the arrogant, dominant and possessive traits that make a great bully. Though he is insecure at times, especially when his parents tell him to try and be more like Raine.

The heroine: Raine Laurent – Lives next to Carter Blackthorne and attends Alstone High with him. She is not wealthy like Carter and the rest of the student body since her uncle left her and her aunt. Though her aunt is friends with Carter’s parents. She suffers from a bit of social anxiety and tries to make herself invisible in clothes that are too big.

The Love Story: Carter feels something for Raine, though he doesn’t understand it since she hides herself away and does her best to escape his notice. However when he sees her in a new light he goes for it.

For some reason Raine keeps inadvertently making Carter mad at her, but in the midst of it all she finds herself wanting him. This book was quite steamy, just the way I like them. Carter made a good bully and though he can’t justify the things he does to her, he has a conscience and ends up feeling bad.

There was also some side storylines which included suspense and danger that were a nice addition to this bully romance. I also liked that some of the characters from Becca Steele’s previous bully romance trilogy were in this book. Cassius and his sister Lena were characters in this book as well as The Four series. Weston, Winter and Caiden also made an appearance as well as my personal favorite Zayde!

I voluntarily read & reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts & opinions are my own.

When did I know I was gonna hate this book? Page 1

I owned this school. I was untouchable. Sauntering down the hallways at Alstone High with my group of friends, aware of the envious looks thrown our way, even the teachers fawning over us.

I'm just reading like oh... 🥱 it's gonna be one of those

    description

This girl was beyond pathetic but I think that was the point so whatever, I won't rag on her too hard. Once the real bullying started I couldn't handle another eye roll so I skimmed the sex scenes and got the hell out of there. Yeah this was just not for me. Big fan of the cover tho.

'TRICK ME TWICE' Is a full length bully romance standalone novel by new to me author 'Becca Steele' Spoken in 'Dual Perspectives.'

I blame it all on the cover, one look and then I was off to Amazon one clicking!! So I'm glad it turned out to be a winner for me!! As soon as I started I was hooked, such a unique, unputdownable read, I loved how this book unfolded, I loved these two together, the invisible mouse and the king of the school.

Throw in the three hot boys the angst and the halloween games and I was all in..This kept me entertained and glued to my ipad throughout, I didn't want it to end.

Raine had skated through school always in the background, no friends, no social life, living in the shadows where she seemed happy enough to be, until she came under Carter's radar, the hot footballer and King of the school, all of a sudden he despised her with a vengeance which she couldn't understand. His dislike and his taunts towards her spiralled out of control when she started getting under his skin, in his head.

The thing with mice, they grow claws, I loved seeing our heroine evolve, moving from the shadows into the light, with a new friendship and her friend pushing her to try new things to get out of her comfort zone, to stick up for herself, she goes from this timid shy girl to one that I barely recognised but loved just the same.

    Four Trickery Stars

To say I was captivated by this book is an understatement. Once I was in, I was in deep, and I couldn’t stop reading until the end. I always see some kind of breadcrumbs as who or what something may happen. But Becca Steele's sideswiped me on this one. I am still in shock and absolutely love it. It’s that time of the year for Halloween games and trickery, and there is trickery indeed. If you like High school Bully Romance this is a must-read for you.

Carter Blackthorn, football captain, alpha, King of Alstone High School, and wealthy. An all-around bully. As confident as he is, Carter does have insecurities with his parents.

Raine Laurent lives next to Carter with her aunt. Is not wealthy like others since her aunt divorce. Her aunt is friends with Carter's mother. Raine is quiet, keeps everyone at arm's length, and stays under everyone’s radar.

Carter feels something for Raine; confused by this, he keeps it under wraps. One night while she is trying to step out of her comfort zone, she tricks him, which makes him mad and makes her a target at school.

There is some severe push/pull in this story, and I thought I had whiplash at times, and I seriously wanted to hurt Carter. But he shined throw at times. I loved Raine's Character growth in the story. At first, I was on the fence on how meek she was, but I was presently surprised. Of course, all is not what it seems, with some the series of bullying, and there is a danger no one saw coming. I enjoyed all the characters in this book, and I hope to them in future books.

I received an arc in exchange for my honest review.

Can I just start by saying: I didn’t like this book. At all. Its like the characters were having a contest to see who could be more annoying. The romance was trash, I didn’t like the writing and obviously the characters did nothing but piss me off. As much as I love a good bully romance, this is just not it. It basically screams cliché wattpad content. I’m pretty sure you can find better ones on wattpad. Do not recommend. Pick something else up and save your time.

apparently high school bully romances are the only things that appeal to me in a slump! i really enjoyed this one, it was like all bully romances, nothing special.

i hated how he hurt her at times but thats kinda the point of being a bully romance so yeah...🤷🏻‍♀️

also, it was really stupid of me to think that this was like The Four series by her, cause i loved that one! 🤡

anyway, since i'm still in the slump, any bully romance rec's ya'll??

FIVE TRICK STARS for Raine and Carter 💙🖤💙🖤!!!

    🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Becca won me over with her series "The Four" so I had high expectations from this book.

I have to admit that I was surprised when I realized that the characters from the previous series appear in this book which is a big plus.

Becca's writing style is simple and interesting so reading this book was a real pleasure.

"Trick Me Twice" is a dark bully high school romance with enemies to lovers trope.

Raine is a female character who has learned to always live in the shadows and hiding from others.

But all that changes when she meets a girl who is completely different from her.

Despite their differences, they become friends and Raine's new friend starts encouraging her to step out of her comfort zone.

Carter is a male character who is used to getting everything he wants one way or another.

But everything changes when Raine enters his life and his emotions spiral out of control.

Raine and Carter's relationship is initially complicated because Carter doesn’t want to admit that he likes Raine which leads to countless ups and downs.

If you're loved "The Four" series and you also love Becca's writing style, then this is a book you need to read next!!!

    Highly recommended!!!

The first in my Halloween reads!
I’ve had this on my Kindle app since last year so I thought I’d better finally read this.

I didn’t like the heavily cliched beginning. Or the fact that Carter does some pretty nasty things (which was totally an overreaction to what Raine did) and Raine’s feelings do not waver.

After all that bully stuff is out of the way though, the story and the characters become more interesting and likeable!
It moves away from the heavy sexual encounters and delves into a bit of why Carter is so resistant to admit his feelings for Raine.

There were little hints of vulnerability in the beginning (to balance out the aggressive and possessive actions) but it’s after Raine decides she can’t do their relationship where we see Carter take a look at himself and his life.

While I questioned some of Raine’s actions, it was good to see her working on her courage and trying to leave the shadows of her life. Which was supported by her friend, Lena.
I liked Lena, though the lack of information on what was going on in her life was a little frustrating.

Not sure why those Dylan or Aunt Marie plots were included but I have to admit, at one point, I did get the creeps.

Something I wasn’t expecting was getting more story after the relationship became a reality. I like when we get a chance to see a couple actually being a couple.

I liked the ending a lot more than the beginning.
Seeing Carter become this new person, to be someone who deserves Raine (his words), is not something you see in bully romances.

Not sure if I’d ever read this again but it was a good slow start to the seasonal reads!

Web-Photo-Editor Are you willing to pay the price? Trick him once, but don’t trick him twice."

“Trick Me Twice” was a standalone by the best selling author Becca Steele. Told in dual perspectives , this book was one hell of a High School bully romance!

Carter Balckthorne never really liked Raine. She was the mousy neighbour next door and was the perfect child his parents wanted. Everything he did was compared to her and he couldn’t hate her more for that. He taunted her every time he saw her in the school and making her uncomfortable was his favourite pastime. That is until his little mouse took it one step far. You see , She tricked him . On the night of halloween she made him believe that she was someone else and made him like her. And now he was going to make her life hell for that betrayal.

Raine was a pretty simple girl. She never understood the hatred Carter held for her but never had it in her to object. That is until one night she stood facing him , with him looking at her with something other than hate. Only because he didn’t know who she was. She actually enjoyed spending the time with her and didn’t even realise that she was tricking him. What she didn’t expect was her fury when he came to know the truth. Now everything was destroyed and there was nothing at which he would stop to make her life a living hell! Soon their games changed into something more seductive. She started hoping that Myeb the infamous Carter would like her too. What she didn’t know was that it was her time to get tricked.

This is not the first book that I have read by this author and As usual it was amazing1 i loved the bully parts , but really made this book amazing for me were the angst parts. The parts where Carter showed his vulnerable side. I have such a weakness for those scenes! To say in short , this book was utter perfection and the author couldn't have written it better, We also got to see the other characters from her books , like Zayne and Cass along with Caiden and Winter too! It was nice to see those people. This book is a definite recommendation to all the high school bully romance lovers out there If you are into second chances and lots of angst then this masterpiece is something that you shouldn’t miss at any cost!

Trick Me Twice was my first book by Becca Steele and will definitely not be my last. I can't wait to read more of her stories.

First I was sold to this book, seeing the cover for the first time, then the blurb sealed the deal. The blurb is super promising and I was really looking forward to reading it. However, I think my expectations got quite ahead of me. Therefore I was a little disappointed when the story didn't fully live up to it. But that's quite the thing with expectations, isn't it?

Trick Me Twice is a wonderful written book, that will catch your attention from the very first page. It's intriguing and a little thrilling. It takes some twist and turns that stop you from putting this book down.

What's preventing me from giving it more stars? To me, the reasons why Carter hates Raine are not strong enough or at least they haven't been explored on a deeper level, making me believe his actions towards her are "valid". Both characters are interesting but have way more potential to them than we get. I think it's just a scratch on the surface.

If you are into light bully stories, this the perfect book for you.

"You can run, but you can't hide."

It's not a secret that I'm a huge fan of bully romances... Combine with that Becca Steele and you will have a rocky, magnificent result...
For once again, we dove on the Alstone world, but this time on high school in contrary of the college that was set the FOUR series and for once again, Becca managed to stole the show and make me swoon over these characters and their story!!!

"Two halves, so different, yet the same.
Trick him once, and you have much to gain.
The gain will not come without a cost.
Can you hold on when hope is lost?"

This was a wicked story full of sexiness and wild moments... The antsy levels were high in here and i was captivated by Raine and Carter, the same with many of the secondary characters in here..
Of course, our lovely characters from Becca's previous series made an appearance and especially Lena and Cassious had many wonderful moments... I loved that i saw them in here and I can not wait to read their own books...
But enough with that, let's focus on Carter and Raine...

"If only we could choose who we fell for. Life would be so much easier."

Carter was popular in school and he was the star football player... He and his friends were ruling the high school's halls... They were untouchable, but for a reason Carter had a grudge toward "insignificant" Raine who was his neighbour...
Raine was always drown to Carter, but he was a complete ass to her most of the time...
She was a nice and a very intelligent girl who was trying to stay invisible to the others around her...
Her only dream is to finish the last year of school and to move far away from there...

"You can want me, but you can never have me. Watch your back, little trickster."

One night and a sort of trickery changed everything between Raine and Carter...
Carter, when realized that he was tricked by Raine, got very mad and he decided to make her pay for her actions...
From that moment, everything is becoming a freakin' mess for both their lives and even though they are fighting it really hard, they can not seem to stand away from each other...
To love, to hate, to trick, to get revenge... Who really knows???

"Are you willing to pay the price?
Trick him once, but don't trick him twice."

I loved Carter and Raine sooo much.... They couldn't be more different... They were miles away from each other's world, but still... they were whole when they were together...
There was an electric atmosphere surrounding their presence and it was inevitable to not end up together at some point... But hell, don't fool yourselves! This was a very hard ride and the things that were happening in here were sooo mean by Carter's side... Raine was a hero for putting up with his idiotic ways...
But told you... They were just perfect for each other!!!

"I go so fucking crazy around you, Raine. You're no good for me. I don't trust myself when I'm around you... I don't like who I am around you."

Yes, this book is set on the same world as the Four series, but honestly, this story can be read as a standalone and I'm daring you to read it, especially if you are huge fans of bully romances...
This book will satisfy you to the maximum and it will make you to crave more of the author's work!!!
Thank you, Becca, and for this wonderful ride!!! It was amazing!!!

"The question that you need to ask...
What is hidden beneath his mask?

Loved Every Bit of This Story!

This story is freaking brilliant! From the tormenting, to the cat and mouse games, to the incredible chemistry, to the suspense, there was never a dull moment. I was hooked from the very beginning!

These Alstone High characters gives the Alstone College characters a run for their money.

Carter and Raine are as opposite as they come but they have some of the best chemistry I've read!

Carter is the king of Alstone High, captain of the football team. (Soccer - I'm American - sue me Carter!)
Every guy wants to be him and every girl wants to be under him.
Raine does her best to stay hidden. No one knows her, no one sees her.
    Except Carter.

If you are a fan of the high school bully romances, look no further. This is your book!

    DEVOURED this in 7hrs.

ARC Received for a Honest Review.
I found Becca's books due to Kian+Preston's short Story in ‘Love at First Fright’ anthology, They're here too AND Of course I wanted more! But, I totally fell in love with The characters in this book, especially Carter+Raine *Swoon+HOT!*. This book has ties to ‘The Four’ trilogy (R's bestie is Cass's little sis-Lena) & we see them here (Lots of Lena & Cass)! I'm so checking it out❤.

Both our MCs are Smart, that we see throughout the story!
Carter, Football captain, Alpha Arrogant Possessive, is the king of Alstone High School along with his Friends- Kian & Xavier. But he has insecurity issues with his parents, especially when they compare him to Raine. Hence, his animosity to her.
It was awesome to see the different layers of him!

Raine, Drama Club's Costume Designer, Shy Meek Sweet, is Carter's neighbor, His parents & her aunt are friends, so Carter & Raine Interact way more than they want. She's not as rich as him, after her uncle left her+Her Aunt.
I loved how she came out of her shell here! Her character development was Amazing❤.

They've always felt something for eachother, but Most of the time ignored it, Until The Halloween ‘Fright Night’. She tricked him by disguising, And when he figures it Out.. She's In Trouble.
Fright's Find+Orgasms, Rides & Fortune Teller, Carter's Gentle side, leaving high & Dry, He knows *Oh shit*.

He spreads Rumors about her but She Gets under his skin, Brings out the worst in him. It seems staying away from her is the best. Though, Someone is Targeting Her..
Rumors, theft charge, Ignoring game, Studying together, Temporary truce, The Bowl & Fight night, accusations, school & orgasms, His honesty, Her snooping, anger, ignoring's the best.

There's some serious push & Pull here, they grow close then Apart..
3's birthday party was So FUN+Game-Changer!

Dares, Mask-Man, Paints & Adorableness..Their Spark is Hot and Later she gives him her Virginity. He's so Swoony+Sweet!

She hates spotlight, and The school Rumors are on Fire. He thinks staying away from her in public (+Humiliating) her will stop her from being targeted..
They can be together in secret, right?
    WRONG.
She's been hiding all her life, she won't any longer, she deserves someone who's not afraid to be with her in Public. The Ball's in his court, they can only be together If he gets past his fear.

    Days pass, miserable, missing, Jelous.
And then Kian+Preston are finally Out with their MM relationship *Yay*..
“After seeing how no one on the team seemed to have a problem with Kian coming out as openly being with Preston, or at least, not to his face, I realised something. We were the kings of the school. We had power. People wouldn’t dare to go up against us—they didn’t want to risk a drop to the bottom of the food chain. If Raine wanted to be with me, I’d protect her. Shield her from any hurt. Try my fucking hardest to make it better.”
    ~Carter

He'd fucked up Bad, Will She Accept him? Cue a Beautiful Grand Gesture (At football game!). *Aww, sweet!*
But the Danger's after Her..And it has Come to get her. Omg shit!! Who's after her? Why? *Heart-racing Scenes!*

But after the Action, there's Hope.. Cue HEA! Fun party, C+R's Fright night imitation❤ *HOT*
The epilogue's Gorgeous: Bright Future + Love Confessions! *Yay!*

I so Loved this Story! I hope we get stories for their friends too❤, they were all Great! So much was happening along the story, this book held me captivated😍.

It’s not that I hated this, I didn’t love it as much either. This is very much Corrupt-Vicious vibes. Like if those two books were combined you would get this. Dont be put off by my rating- I don’t like high school romances remember? I really read for it yall. (I do this for my squad) but anyways this wasn’t anything to rave about in my opinion. Typical bully romance where at some point things get a little too out of hand and then they end up realizing oh shit I have feelings. I also idk, I just didn’t connect with the characters but once again- I am not too fond of high school new adult.

Still solid enough to recommend tho, and the tension was there.

  • Melluvsbooks

I almost stopped after the 1st sentence. His name is “Carter” and he calls himself “untouchable”. 👀🤔😬🤨😕 I’ve already read that book, (it’s FABULOUS!) and this comes off super shady. 👀 I gave the author the benefit of the doubt and kept reading, but I’m side-eying pretty hard.

This book was just meh. The reasons the H is mean to the h are silly. His perspective is super whiney. I thought she’d be better off with Cassius. 🤷🏼‍♀️ the ending was cute, but this book overall was not great and will be tossed into the pile of forgettable bully reads.

  • M

    This cover did me in!

So did Carter Blackthorne! Even with the push and pull. Even with the crap things he did or said. I still wanted him to get the girl in the end.

Raine was strong and didn't give in to him. She made him work for her heart. Even though she may have tricked him on Fright Night, in the end he loved his little trickster. She was never plain to him. She was everything.

I also loved the additional characters from Becca Steele's The Four series.

  • Megan

"Little trickster, where are you going in such a hurry?"

I'll admit, I was a little curious to see what direction Becca would go in after The Four and my curiosity rewarded me brilliantly.

Raine is an easily relatable character, and I found her very easy to connect with. Carter is the alpha male who is just to die for...this author is a legend for creating these drool-worthy male characters and I find myself obsessing over every one of them. Yes...including Cassius.

I idolise this authors creations, she never fails to keep my attention and I never tire of the words that she produces. Carter and Raine are so very detailed in comparison to The Four and that's why I like this, though the worlds combine...its a totally different world. Intriguing, mysterious and fiery are my three words to describe this read. 3 words...5 stars...for me, Becca Steele is in a league of her own when it comes to thrilling romances.

Give me all your tears, baby.

Trick Me Twice is an all new standalone from Becca Steele set in Alstone High School.

    Watch your back, little trickster.

Becca Steele bought very real problems to the forefront in Trick Me Twice because Raine suffers with anxiety. She is so real with how she deals with situations and I loved that! This didn’t make her weak in any way though, I hate a weak heroine, it just made her deal with situations differently and it was refreshing to read.

Are you willing to pay the price? Trick him once, but don’t trick him twice.

Becca Steele has once again proved why she is a 1-click author. She bring all of the heat and had me flipping the pages to try and figure out what the hell was going on while at the same time trying to savour every last word.

I couldn’t get enough of Carter and Raine’s book. The push and pull between the two had me turning the pages faster than I can read. I loved seeing the growth in Raine’s character. And Carter was just melt my panties off sexy. But the cherry on the sundae was seeing Cassius. Be still my freaking heart. 😍 TMT is a sexy, thrilling, knock both characters in the head type of read. I was enamoured and sacrificed sleep to finish this amazing story by Becca Steele. This is a book hangover, epic, give me more of the Alstone characters must read. Epic!

I should have dnf this after the first ten pages, I would have saved myself from reading about a raven called Picasso talking. I kid you not.

I definitely lost a few brain cells reading this. It has probably the most unlikeable characters I’ve ever read.

It is all over the place, like the author didn’t know where to go with it. One minute you have choking, then of course the halloween festivities with jerks in masks, a witch, a stalker and a kidnapping, the shy female character and the friend that pushes her out of her comfort zone, said character suddenly being super confident (except when it comes to call out the male protagonist or to tell him to fuck off), the rushed “i’m falling in love with you”, the sudden realization from the male protagonist that he's been acting like a jerk for 98% of the book and how much in love he is...

The motives behind Carter’s hatred against Raine were so ???????????????... but what can you expect from such a self-centered prick.

I know what to expect from bully or dark romances (if this book can be considered dark...), it can be either really good or really bad. In this case it was the last.

Zero self-respect, chemistry or deepness. That's it.

  • dany

Bien, bien.

  • PP's Bookshelf

If you are obsessed with high school bully romance, Trick Me Twice by Becca Steele is for you! It has everything that I love about this trope. Bad boy. Good girl. And their twisted love story.

Carter is the captain of his school soccer team and along with his friends, he rules the school. And Raine just makes him angry. He just cannot stand this little, perfect, shy and nerdy girl who is also his neighbour. Then on Halloween, he finds out this girl has a devilish side too. Now Raine wants to run but she has nowhere to escape.

I expected this story to be a lot more darker and angsty from cover and blurb. There was a definite dissonance. But this is high school bully romance no doubt. Carter is this cold and lethal boy everyone worships. And Raine wants to blend in the background. It all starts with Carter torturing her, playing mind games with her and pushing her around. But Raine slowly discovers the sass and fire inside her and she pushed back. They had issues. And it was a long and difficult journey. It had some definitely sexy and hotter than sin moments. The chemistry was there. There were angst, heartbreak, secrets and drama. But somehow everything didn't gel together. I felt like I am missing something. I couldn't connect to the story. I needed a little bit more of everything.

If you are looking for a good high school bully romance with heat and feels, Trick Me Twice by Becca Steele is definitely worth reading.

I reviewed an early copy voluntarily

Becca Steele knows her way around creating alpha males and resilient females, yeah? After loving and obsessing over Caiden and Winter, my grabby hands were in full effect wanting to see what she came up with next.

I love Carter. Love him! He’s intense and commanding, the King of AHS. Carter is wickedly charming, but definitely holds danger in his hands. Raine though, YES. As much as I love Carter, I love this girl even more. She’s so relatable, so easy to connect with. I loved watching her grow and start to feel not only comfortable with her surroundings, but with herself too.

All it takes is one Halloween trick for Raine to really get blasted on Carter’s path. There is so much push and pull between these two, and their chemistry is undeniably hot. Decidedly done with letting Carter steamroll over her, Raine pushes back and that’s when the real fun begins.

This book has plenty of witty banter between these two, as well as deliciously steamy moments. There’s some angst, heartbreak, and suspense thrown in too. Plus, we get a few drop ins with Cassius Drummond and who would ever say no to him?

Becca Steele gives us everything we need and love in Trick Me Twice and I love anything to do with this universe.

It was good. As far as dark goes it could have darker. But the spice was really good! It was very well written, likeable characters and just an enjoyable read. I'd read more from this author no problem.

FULL REVIEW BELOW!!! One word, AMAZING!!!

I will not be ‘Tricked’ by Becca Steele. After writing drool-worthy, flaming hot, domineering alphas in her previous series, The Four, I was curious to see what the characters would be like in TMT. Well, if drool-worthy alphas are your thing, (and it should be), you would be extremely happy to hear, that Ms. Steele, delivered!
Carter Blackthorne is a delicious concoction of charming, intense, wicked, untouchable, and downright god-worthy in his appearance (stay back ladies, he is mine). He along with his 2 friends, Kian and Xavier are ‘The three Kings of Alstone High’. Just to witness their swagger and to be present in their ‘air’, you would know how untouchable and almighty they are. These may be boys in high school, but, their anthem should be, ‘Boyz 2 Men’, because these alphas are all men.
Raine Laurent is a breath of fresh air. She is your typical good girl, the shy and quiet introvert with only one friend, Lena. Lena is good for Raine, she tries to get her out of her shell and enjoy life. One event that Lena took her to was a county run event called Fright Night. So, what does one come across at Fright Night, how about three guys all dressed in black with the only exception being a purge mask (neon X for eyes and neon line for mouth.) Raine knew right away she was in trouble.
Carter and Raine have this wild and wonderful dichotomy, pushing each other in their give and take. I love the way they were written and the overall message of good vs. bad, alpha swag vs. blooming confidence. Ms. Steele wrote this back/forth and push/pull so well, creating the drama and suspense that I was hooked from beginning to end!!
I love everything about this book. The storyline, plotline, characters (including crossovers from The Four), the cover, the blindsided twists and turns, the angst, gah, the angst!! Everything! I loved it, I could not wait to read more and then the two most dreaded words to a bibliophile…The End! NOOOO, I wanted more! I guess Becca did get a trick on me, all this yumminess and BAM (Emeril Lagasse style) …The End!! In all seriousness, Trick Me Twice is an amazing book. One click it and read this book!!

" Are you willing to pay the price? Trick him once, but don't trick him twice"
This book was one of my favorites of 2020! It has darkness, laughter, romance, suspense, and love perfectly balanced to make a perfect story!

Oh Carter, how I love thee. Carter was a great character from the start (hello, the neck grab *swoon*). And I knew he was going to have hella walls put up that our girl would have to break through. Would tricking him be the biggest mistake of Raine's life? Or the greatest?

Raine was so relatable to me as someone who has anxiety. It was wonderful to see the world through her eyes and really watch her grow into herself. Raine was the girl I used to be and the woman I have become all wrapped up in one. It was so well written and such a great character arc that it brought me to tears on more than one occasion.

I loved learning a little more about Lena in this book and I love how fiercely loyal she is to Raine. Cass's appearance was wonderful and brought some of his joy when Raine needed it. Aunt Marie and that damn Raven added in the suspense in all the right places. A well-balanced story all around.

    3.5 stars

A traditional bully, enemies to lovers romance that was rather mild. Captain of the football team dislikes academically excellent, quiet girl who keeps to herself. Carter's dislike of Raine stems from his family's holding Raine in (too) high regard in contrast to him. Meanwhile, Raine actually likes Carter. What ensues is their journey to love.

And as I write the main conflict, I recognize this is not the book for me. Instead, this story is best suited for those who enjoy a mild, almost sweet bully romance considerate of safety with a hint of mystery. There is little conflict and weak drama; it teased jealousy, other woman or man situations, steam, even bullying. While it starts out intriguing, it fizzled into OK, almost as if afraid to depict darker themes more characteristic of a bully romance, even enemies to lovers. The characters were initially appealing, started with strong distinct personalities, but unrealistically switching into moderate, easy-going types, even the typical mean girl ex just became friendly.

I most enjoyed the pace of the story; it was progressive, not overly descriptive, nice flow. I also liked the attraction between the two main characters, nice amount of chemistry and tension. (Steam level was on the low side though.) Great camaraderie among the characters, diversity and lgbtqia-friendly.

Overall, the lack of dynamics from drama and intensity was a detriment to a richer story, and for me, a missed opportunity to capitalize on a plot that started as very intriguing -- the carnival, the masks and unknown identities, the steam. Every theme simply resolved through the stroke of words, through the lightness of the themes, rather than through a natural evolution of angst-worthy events. A worthy read if you want light depth. It's cute.
