When I selected "Popular Indian Fairy Tales" by Stuti Gupta, I was expecting either panchtantra or mythology-based stories. But I was completely surprised by the stories of the book. Stuti has brought out stories that are not based on both of these genres. She had prepared and presented a fresh way of storytelling.

The book contains multiple stories. Few are based on magic, few on wisdom, few based on bravery, but all of them are full of learning. It's not just stories for your kid but a full set of moral values. Literally, after each page author has provided questions that will help you and your kids to linger upon. Let me share with you my experience while narrating stories I was asking these questions to my kid. He was thinking up to his level of understanding. At many places, he was able to separate good from bad, the difference in a situation which was a good experience for both of us. Due to this question-answer process, I couldn't use the book for bedtime stories. Asking questions and expecting answers will keep the child aware and awake, which defeats the purpose of bedtime stories. So I took the book slowly, one or half story at a time. For my kid, it was entertainment with learning.

Regarding language usage, it is plain and simple. The wording was age-appropriate. The selection of stories and characters were also engaging for the age group of 5 to 10. Few activities like the color picture, find the path, connect dots, etc are also provided in between chapters.

Overall it is a nice concept and deserves 4.25 out of 5 for the age group.

    Perfect book for kids

This book is a collection of 6 short tales. The stories deal with humanity, hard work, friendship. Every story has a moral value to enlighten the kids, we will be able to relinquish the nature of human beings. It makes us reckon from different perspectives. It is described in a descriptive manner setting free the rich vocabulary so it will be easy to comprehend for juveniles. This book made me go behind to my childhood days where I used to read bedtime stories. I love those illustrations that come in between the chapters. The puzzles, coloring pages, and questions are given at the end of each story that seemed to be an engaging read, all the kids will like to read as it is fun. I recommend this book because it is a short read and we can complete it in one sitting so it is a perfect book to get for kids and also the adults who can narrate these wonderful stories to their children.

It’s a mostly retelling of Indian fairy tales. Many of you might have but I haven’t read any of this. So these stories were so fresh for me. I am glad that I was introduced to them via this author. The book is collection of fairy tales. It’s a short read that can be read in few hours. I will only summarise reviews and titles as some of you might have read them, the other versions and it will be spoilers. The first story is the wood cutter and the fairies. I liked it very much. Author has narrated it amazingly with prompt questions woven around the story. I liked that idea the most. Because that will help developing cognitive functions in children. Majority stories have that pattern. Mystery of missing treasure has a suspense/mystery component and I enjoyed reading that as well. At the end of each stories, fun activities have been given. That reminded me of my childhood and I couldn’t resist doing them again. The maze and colouring pictures sections made me nostalgic. I loved the concept. I loved the names chosen for the characters. Author has used good vocabulary and language that will help children building their vocabulary and sentence formation. The narration style is captivating that holds the attention of the reader. For me it was so magical experience that I couldn’t put the book down so definitely children will enjoy it. Overall good one. Recommended from my side.

*Thanks to the publishers for a review copy*(All opinions are my own)

Okay, so I am officially obsessed with children's books! This is my 3rd children's book this week and man! Did I love it? I absolutely adored this one. I finished this in a single sitting.

'Popular Indian Fairytales' consists of 6 short stories, none of which resembles one another. Also, there are a bunch of activities in the book like puzzles and pictures to color that are perfect to hold a child's interest.
The stories are beautifully weaved and are very easy to understand. The vocabulary used is perfect for a child, neither too simple nor too hard. If you too imagine everything that happens in a book while reading it, then these stories would definitely take you to a magical world.

The cover states that this is a retelling but I have never before read these stories maybe because I didn't use to read as a kid, so these stories were refreshingly new for me.

The best thing about this book is that every story has something to teach which would help in a child's moral development.

This was a really fun read for me and I recommend this one to all the book lovers out there, irrespective of their age.

    Keep Reading guys!

Popular Indian fairy tales contains six stories. Each story has this unique format of storytelling where the author while narrating, asks questions to see how the readers would answer or react of the situation mentioned there if happened to them. I liked how interactive questions played a vital part as it can show that children are not only following through the story but also building this mindset where their thoughts and opinions are openly discussed.

These stories are great for bedtime stories. They carry great morals and the fact that you get to have a lively discussion with the kids to see how do they make their choice when the character of the story is in dilemma or in a happier situation is definitely a win. And after each story there will be an activity such as coloring and games.

Definitely give it a try and I'm sure this book will be enjoyed by the children as magical element has been a great focus.

Fairy Tales reminds me of my childhood. I still remember how my Dida(grandma) used to tell me stories. Those times were the best, when life was so much simple.

The Book - "Popular Indian Fairy Tales" by Stuti Gupta is a collection of six(6) short stories. These stories are magical in its own way. All the stories are simple and meaningful. Reading this book is like reliving good old times of childhood. And the questions asked by the author while narrating gives a special touch to this book. Among all, I really like - "The Woodcutter And The Fairies".

Overall, I really liked the book. The language used is also simple and lucid, which is great because it will be easy for children to read and understand. But I guess, adults should also give it a try. I would definitely recommend this book, specially for the children.

I really enjoyed reading these fairy tales. It was very nostalgic. Language of the stories is very easy and one who is beginner in learning english would be benefitted by it. There are fun and engaging activities for kids in the book which adults can too enjoy. Among all the stories , "When the hermit's daughter became queen" is the one which touched me most.

This is a compilation of short fables with lessons in the end. This also contains puzzles, colouring activities which makes it even more interesting for me. I think there isn't any age bound for this book and I liked the idea of reading fairy tales based on Indian culture.

Popular Indian Fairy Tales by Stuti Gupta is a collection of short stories for children that aims to encourage them to think, reflect and learn.

My top three thoughts on 'Popular Indian Fairy Tales':
    1. I'm a huge fan of folklore and tales. I read a healthy mix of stories from all over the world in my childhood. My mom made sure that every trip to India meant we'd return with a collection of Panchatantra books and Jataka tales. At the time, I would scoff at these books and chuck them aside. I now appreciate how they gave me glances into different Indian societies, lifestyle and culture.
As the book title states, Stuti has tried to capture popular Indian Fairy Tales that inspired her and has put together a collection of stories that would hopefully teach and inspire other children.
    2. It's been a while since I read a book meant for kids, but I'm always open to reading them because I do my best to gift books to the younger generation. Stuti's writing is simple, and the stories flow effortlessly. She almost sounds like she's talking to you through the direct narration to the reader. There are also activities in the book to keep children engaged like puzzles and coloring pages. I enjoyed The Mystery of the Missing Treasure the most. I appreciate that Stuti asks questions in the middle of her stories and towards the end of them. I actually found myself answering a lot of those questions. I imagine they would encourage discussions and make children think about morals and reinforce specific values. A few themes in the stories are ethics, kindness, responsibilities, selfishness, greed, hard work, love, relationships, honesty, hard work and compassion.
    3. As a feminist, I generally have this gripe with the language used or the behavior of the people in folktales. It isn't directed at this book specifically but in general, with fairy tales. So why do I still read them? Because they're fun! Coming back to what I was saying, I feel like certain actions/choice of words plant the seeds of a particular kind of mindset from an early age which only cements into a patriarchal way of thinking later on. I understand that this is just a children's book and whatever is in these stories is meant to reflect a different time, so these were considered normal back then. It still doesn't sit right with me. E.g. the first tale has a woodcutter who stays behind with 'beautiful girls' which leads to him forgetting his responsibilities and his family - his wife and kids. The story, of course, has a moral and teaches a lesson, but the fact that the man made a huge, selfish decision based solely on the looks of the women is something that irks me. Such things kept jumping out at me throughout all the tales but having said that; this is a book that delivers way more than it promises.

I have given an honest opinion and have been compensated for sharing my thoughts accordingly.

So, this book is collection of some lesser known Indian fairytale retelling, some of which even I read for the first time and I used to devour fairytales as a child 💕
    .
It contains six stories filled with a nice blend of magic and realism, these stories are short and written in a very simple language perfect for reading to and for children. The author gave it a very special touch by including questions in the middle, which in my opinion increases the power to inculcate the values that she is trying to teach through these stories many folds. These are not your regular questions that you ask children while reading them a story, but questions which will make them think about what they understood and what is their opinion on the actions that these characters are taking 💕
    .
Reading fairytales for children as an adult is always very nostalgic, because it takes you to a time when these stories were so believable and real to you. I believe we need more magic and belief in our lives that we had as children 💕
    .
Give this book a try if you're looking for something to read to child which has inherent lessons that come naturally through words. Plus this also has some exercises at the end of chapters to keep the reader engaged💕
    .
As with all short stories collection you're bound to love some and not like others, and this is no exception as I did find some stories stretched too thin, but they are written for children so I guess that worked in some stories like I especially liked the one called The young king and the magical gifts💕
    .
    Have fun 💕

An engaging read, implanting, and instilling the lost culture of bedtime stories. It's a collection of 6 short stories of various themes and storylines. The introduction tells about why to choose ' Indian Fairy Tales' is utterly fascinating.
    *
The writing style is descriptive, elaborative, and vividly clear. There is a lot of narratives put behind each scene, which makes it a typical vintage fairy tale. The questions between paragraphs keep you truly involved with the plot and make you think from that character's shoes.
    *
The characters are sagaciously indited, making each plot very captivating. The quotient of magic, power, jealousy, love, betrayal, and wittiness is rightly blended. 'Adventures with the Jewelled Arrow' is my favorite pick.
    *
There are many activities in-between stories, like finding the path, coloring, etc., which will make the kid within us spellbound. The sketching across the book is class apart. The moral each story conveys is worth takeaways.
    *
.I totally enjoyed reading a bunch of fairy tales after a very long time. I could recommend this book to awake the inner child in you. Just grab the book and relax in your reverie.

    Interesting

Popular Indian Fairy Tales by Stuti Gupta

This book is a collection of six short stories with moral teachings and hint of magic in background of India.

I have always loved reading such stories. Though the cover insists it’s retelling, I am reading these stories for the first time. It was such a fun to read them and I am very sure that it’s apt for kids, middle graders and even adults. The book is well written with proper language and grammar but also very easy to understand. Though the stories are intended to spread moral teachings, the characters are not impossibly idealistic. So, suits the contemporary setting.

Questions discussed between stories is well thought out and so can help the young readers to comprehend story and focus on good things. The simple activities shared at the end of each story is super fun, because I love colouring and crosswords.

  • Sayantani

This is a simple short book perfect for children. It is a collection of six short stories beautiful written in simple language for understanding of children. The stories are entertaining as well as has good moral teachings.
I loved the book as it bought back memories from my childhood when my grandfather would tell me stories before bed which became the reason for my reading habit. And these stories are perfect to read out to younger ones.
What I loved about this book was how the author added a number of questions in between which make the reader think and is perfect to bloom the imaginations of the little minds. The additional pages for colouring and treasure hunt are cherries on the top.

Well yeah, I do think a few stories could have a better ending, and sometimes a better course of action but overall a perfect book for a child to get lost in the world of fairies and magic and learning moral values at the same time.

  • Elusive ELL

    Nostalgic for my childhood.

While reading this book, I cannot help but reminisce my childhood because I love to read fairytales.
Surprisingly, I still enjoy them at 21.
This book helped me remember so many stories that I have read, diving deep to "My Most Loved Stories From Around The World" as well as "Anjali's Magic Needle".
This book also gives us many advices on life which includes never to be vain, greedy, proud of one's achievements or possessions, to never keep a secret from the one you love, to be content with what one has, to never take something that does not belong to him/her, and above all it teaches us that kindness is everything.
Pick it up for yourself. A fun book, which you will definitely enjoy along the way.
It is also kind of a break for me from reading heavy, and deep literature.

  • Rammi

It’s a collection of six short stories which are kind of retelling of what we have read or heard in our childhood. What I liked in the book is added activities and questions which will keep them busy and enhance their imagination.
The reason behind taking two star off from the rating is mentioning of religion and caste in some of the stories. In my opinion fairytales or kids stories should be free of these elements. Some stories are also biased towards gender. We’re living in 21st century and we need to fill these gaps not to ingrain in kids brain. Kids book should be written in such a way that it can be read by everyone regardless of their religion and gender. Fairytales are meant to be a fun way of learning moral values not religious values or gender specific roles. If it’s in the books for ages then it’s time that we change it by “retelling” these stories.

  • Astha Pandey

This book is a total nostalgia for me. All you can feel is to re-live your childhood memories. There is a collection of few stories in this book for your toddler.

Each and every story have their own moral and teaching. All stories are mostly based on Mystery, Adventure , Magic and Fairies.

    There are six stories like:
    1. The woodcutter and the fairies.
    2. The mystery of the missing treasure.
    3. The young king and the magical Gifts.
    4. Adventures with the jewelled arrow.
    5. The one with magical powers.
    6. When the hermit's daughter became queen.

All stories have there own lesson and moral teaching to your kids. They can learn caring, love and happines. The description vocabularies are simply awesome
